What is this new feature on Google?
-
Hey everyone,
I typed "Vancouver Colleges" into Google and this new feature came up which I have never seen. It displays popular schools.
Could someone tell me what this is called?
And how do I get our college on here?
Thank you!

Hi Adam,
No we are not the Brighton College in the UK, we are the one in Vancouver, BC, so I think you have our business info mixed up lol. Our website is http://www.brightoncollege.comand our google plus is here https://plus.google.com/100116630212547145177/posts . We are a private career college so 3 - 18 is definitly not our target LOL!
We do need more reviews though, i am waiting for the verification card from Google because I just merged the google local and google places accounts. So i was planning on getting more reviews after its verified.
Thanks for your advice! Feel free to add me as a friend here

I just had a look at your site, if you are the Brighton College in the UK this might help.
I just looked at your site and you cater to 3-18 year olds. In Vancouver they are using colleges in the American way meaning Universities. If you google London Colleges you get the same result universities and further education. At the top of the bar you can see it says Universities Mentioned on the Web, I wonder if that will affect you getting in the list?
I'm trying to get myself on it too but for hotels, so this question jumped out at me. If you google London Colleges and pick Birkbeck, it doesnt have any schema on its site , same with a couple of others, so that might not be a priority. Also the lowest there had around 47/45 page/domain authority, which means its doable for you.
If you look at their Google+ page they only have +2 to their page, which is very low and only 21 reviews. Maybe you could encourage more reviews?
Anyway good luck,
Adam

Yes, there is a great article by Google on their knowledge graph. They also wrote a good article about the use of knowledge graph in search.
In terms on getting on there- I'm not too sure, I haven't seen any studies or done any experiments. It has worked for clients when setting up Google+ pages and making sure they are clear and linked to the website. It also seems to help to have good schema mark up. For example, if you are a famous person you should have a good use of person schema, have a Google+ page and also make sure your Wikipedia is up to date and clearly defined.

Hey Dan,
That's cool, have you got a link to a decent article on the knowledge graph?
How hard is getting on the knowledge graph?

If you run Firebug on it they call it the appbar in the class. I googled AppBar and didnt get any results about it. I wonder if it's carried over from Google+?
I ran the same thing in the uk and it comes up for "london universities" as well as colleges but neither allows schools.
I was trying to think of another group of entities similar in nature like government departments etc.. but had no joy. not seen anything like that before. I wonder if you can replicate it for other entities..?
If you click on each of the colleges it brings up the search results for their name and because they are recognised its brings up their profile on the right hand side with their wikipedia page showing and some address details that it pulls form eleswhere. I'd guess if you could get one of those you would get on the appbar (or whatever its called) too..
But that's all guess work.. maybe someone else has a proper idea!

This is Google's new 'frequently mentioned on the web..' feature. They have been testing it for about 8 months or so now. It is based on their knowledge graph which is their database of pretty much every existing thing - people, places, films, music etc.
To get on there you should probably have a descriptive Google+ page and have good schema mark up on your website. This will help Google understand the connection between your college and Vancouver.

What are the technical details (touchpoints) of a website gathered by Google?
Hi all, Google crawls all the webpages and gathers content to index and ranking. Beside this general info, what are the all other possible technical details Google will be gathered about a website to rank or penalise or optimise the website in SERP? Like IP address, DNS server, etc.......Please share your knowledge and ideas on this. Thanks

Google Algo Update
Hi I'm trying to look into how the update in Oct - Nov affected our site. It's positive with us ranking for more keywords, but I wondered if anyone knew what had changed. For example, one of our pages ranked for 291 keywords in October, now it ranks for 406 keywords. We've done nothing to this page in that time. I just want to try and understand what's happening with the algorithm a little more (although I'm sure everyone does :). Does anyone have any insights? Thanks!

404s in Google Search Console and javascript
The end of April, we made the switch from http to https and I was prepared for a surge in crawl errors while Google sorted out our site. However, I wasn't prepared for the surge in impossibly incorrect URLs and partial URLs that I've seen since then. I have learned that as Googlebot grows up, he'she's now attempting to read more javascript and will occasionally try to parse out and "read" a URL in a string of javascript code where no URL is actually present. So, I've "marked as fixed" hundreds of bits like /TRo39,

etc., etc.... But they are also returning hundreds of otherwise correct URLs with a .html extension when our CMS system generates URLs with a .uts extension like this: https://www.thompsoncigar.com/thumbnail/CIGARS/90-RATED-CIGARS/FULL-CIGARS/9012/c/9007/pc/8335.html
when it should be:
https://www.thompsoncigar.com/thumbnail/CIGARS/90-RATED-CIGARS/FULL-CIGARS/9012/c/9007/pc/8335.uts Worst of all, when I look at them in GSC and check the "linked from" tab it shows they are linked from themselves, so I can't backtrack and find a common source of the error. Is anyone else experiencing this? Got any suggestions on how to stop it from happening in the future? Last month it was 50 URLs, this month 150, so I can't keep creating redirects and hoping it goes away. Thanks for any and all suggestions!

Winning The New SERP Battle
I run a niche website (www.picnic-basket.com) that is approaching 10 years old. I have consistently added new content, performed redesigns, etc and WAS rewarded with a #1 placement on Google for my main keyword phrase for quite a long time. All our links are natural, no link-farms and I don't do exchanges either. I blog, write articles about our niche, have free cookbooks, delicious recipes and are always finding cool new products. FB & Twitter are also maintained. After Panda I'm now below the fold with amazon.com, bedbathandbeyond.com, worldmarket.com, overstock.com and brookstone.com all above me. These sites don't have anything to do with my niche other than just selling some items. ROI is horrible for me with PPC on this keyword phrase. I'm sure Googles' revenue has increased quite a bit in this category because users only see relevant websites up in the paid area. Through years of hard work I was finally able to beat my old niche competitors but I'm left wondering, How do I beat the "Big Boys"? Any advice for someone like me?

Why does Google say they have more URLs indexed for my site than they really do?
When I do a site search with Google (i.e. site:www.mysite.com), Google reports "About 7,500 results" -- but when I click through to the end of the results and choose to include omitted results, Google really has only 210 results for my site. I had an issue months back with a large # of URLs being indexed because of query strings and some other non-optimized technicalities - at that time I could see that Google really had indexed all of those URLs - but I've since implemented canonical URLs and fixed most (if not all) of my technical issues in order to get our index count down. At first I thought it would just be a matter of time for them to reconcile this, perhaps they were looking at cached data or something, but it's been months and the "About 7,500 results" just won't change even though the actual pages indexed keeps dropping! Does anyone know why Google would be still reporting a high index count, which doesn't actually reflect what is currently indexed? Thanks!

Google Cached Pages
I made some on-site changes to a site last week, in particular their page titles. This was all done on the same day at the same time. Now, one of those pages, got re-indexed on August 8th and has my updated changes, which also helped with my ranking. The other page I made changes to still shows a cached version from July 27th, which is before I made the changes. Why wouldn't google have an updated page from August 8th for both pages, not just one?
