Citations for service providers and different locations
-
My clients are mostly photographers who work from home, so service based and dont have a full address listed or fear to and many want to service bigger cities and not cities they live in, or want more than one city and state. What are best practices for SEO for multiple locations as well as service providers?

Hi Feuza,
Linda has pointed to one of the best recent articles on this topic of needing to build citations while hiding the address of the business. I will add to this that your photographers are fortunate enough to be in an industry in which writing up locally-optimized descriptions of their photo shoots should be easy. Much more scope for the imagination here than if they were plumbers, right?
Whether your clients do this via an on-site blog or a library-like gallery of articles about their different shoots in different towns, there is great opportunity for content development that showcases their work in the different cities where they would love to gain visibility in the SERPs. They can write up weddings they shoot if they do that, or if they are nature photographers, they can write about the different regional and national parks, or if they do business photography, they can write about the companies they are shooting in different cities. And, remember, too, that they can geotag their images on social sharing sites like Flickr, Panoramio and Picasa. Pinterest could also be a great area for them to be active, too. Lots of opportunity here!

Linda, this is very helpful, yeah photographers think once can magically appear some where if not paying for google adwords and such. Many work from home and fear showing their real address. They are obsessed with ranking local but some of this huge towns its an impossible task and I try and educate them as much as possible.
Thank you for your input, I will check out that article

Hi Feuza,
In Google local it's tough to rank in the local 7 pack unless your address is actually in the city you are trying to rank in. You can try to rank in organic in those other cities, but depending on competition, normally you can't get in "the pack" unless you are located there.
But again varies by industry and city. Test it. Google: "City + KW" and see if everyone's address is in that city. Sometimes in smaller towns or low competition industries it will be mixed results.
As far as citations go - they don't move the needle that much with the blended algo. I mean they are important and you need to have a good base. But adding more won't necessarily increase rank. The current algo is more about organic ranking factors.
But as far as citations for service area businesses with hidden address... it's good to still get citations with address, because Google will match them to the address inside dash.
If you have clients that really don't want their address showing anywhere online, Phil Rosek has a post with a list of citation sources that don't require address. http://www.localvisibilitysystem.com/2013/04/22/private-local-citations-where-can-you-list-your-business-but-hide-your-address/

Multiple Google Places Accounts - Same Physical Location
Hi there, One of my clients is a local law firm. I have created, populated and verified a Places page for them, but now I have discovered that they had previously created one for each of their attorneys at that location. According to Google's quality guidelines, this is totally fine. However, I am wondering if I should try to verify each of these accounts within Places to enhance their listing coverage? One thing I've already tried is modifying some of the listing details via Map Maker, but it would be nice to just make edits en masse, I think. Any suggestions?

Unstructured citations
We all now how important citations are, structured and unstructured for local results. Oftentimes, as David Mihm said, they are the factor that could tilt the balance.

It is also true that the higher the authority of a website the more weight Google puts on a citation. My question is, how far should you go after those unstructured citations, would you get them from everywhere you can if the number and not the quality would be the difference between number 1 and number 2 spot in Google local?1 -
To have a location (that is really not a location)
So here is the problem that I am facing. The physical location of our business is located in a suburb of a large metro area market (which consists of 3 different cities). Our company services all of the cities located in the metropolitan area market. I have seen over the past year with Google+ and Google places that Google gives preference to businesses in local search based on their location (specifically to businesses that are located near the center of the city). My suspicions were confirmed by the following: http://www.davidmihm.com/local-search-ranking-factors.shtml In the past we went out and played the game where we purchased UPS boxes in our service cities so that we can compete in Google local search local (recommendation from a SEO company that we were using at the time). I did not really want to do that, but at the time it seemed as though we had no other option with how Google was ranking businesses in those markets. Now Google has caught on to this strategy and has killed those local listings. It is frustrating that Google assumes that a listing should have higher rank based largely on physical location. We never had the intent of violating Google policy, but what are we to do? Not trying to play victim but it is true. My question is how can we rank extremely well in local search for the different cities of the metro area considering that we are physically located in a suburb? Has anyone else successfully overcame this obstacle? Any ideas on how we can rank well in Google+/Google Places in these cities? Frustrated Business Owner.

Quick ways of finding out of date / inconsistent citations
Hi fellow mozzers! We are currently relaunching our website and are in the process of ensuring all our local citations are up to date and consistent. In doing so, I've noticed that there are still countless listings under our old address, which probably isn't doing our local rankings a whole world of good! I have been hunting these down by searching "company name" "old address" to bring up any references, but I wondered if there was a tool to find these quicker, in the same way Whitespark finds citation sources to begin with? Similarly, is there a tool that flags up listings that have the correct NAP info, but that has maybe been formatted differently enough so as to cause consistency probs? Thanks all!

Local SEO - our company is in 2 very different locations
Hi, Our company nlpca.com is in 2 locations. It's doing really well in San Francisco, California But we've opened a 2nd location in Salt Lake City, Utah The problem is that our site is all about San Francisco, California. Utah is just as important as San Francisco to us and we need to start tailoring to both. People from Utah say they are confused because our site is so tailored to California. Even our domain name is the keyword "NLP" combined with the state initial "CA" for California. A new domain is not an option. One thing we are thinking of doing is changing our header to say "The NLP and Coaching Institute and the NLP Institute of California". It would say both of our company names and hopefully the first would catch the Utah people. But I don't think it's just our banner. Can you take a look at our site and tell us how to tailor to both locations and keep our current working optimization for San Francisco, California? Thanks!

Citations have dissapeared from places listing
This site citations have dissapeared from the 'more about this place' and looks to have effected the maps ranking by dropping the listing a few places: http://maps.google.com.au/maps/place?hl=en&ie=UTF8&q=stella+settlements&fb=1&gl=au&hq=stella+settlements&hnear=Perth+WA&cid=9895804169495459418&z=14 The citations that have been removed are: http://www.truelocal.com.au/business/stella-settlements/burswood http://www.hotfrog.com.au/Companies/Stella-Settlements http://www.yellowpages.com.au/wa/burswood/stella-settlements-13951907-listing.html (all of these are listed on other competitors citations currently) (also the places page is using the reviews on Truelocal.com.au listing above which is strange) Do you know why these citations listings have been removed, however these have not been removed on competitors places pages by Google? thanks

Will linking to my citation sources help google recognize them / credit my places account?
Or does google treat this behavior the same way as a reciprocal link and discount any credibility of the citation?

Will linking to my citation sources help google recognize them / credit my places account?
Or will those sources be discounted by google then similar to how google discounts link exchanges? I have noticed some pages, like mapquest, don't really have a directory, so google might not be aware of their content unless it is linked too??? In this type of a case, would it help to link to mapquest's search results? then the citation will get picked up by google? Example: http://www.mapquest.com/?hk=6-i30tP49i
