Beating big brands for rankings on Google page 1 post Panda & Penguin
-
Hi all,
so having followed lots of SeoMoz guidelines that we have read here and standard SEO ideas we seem to no longer be able to rank for our core keywords.. and certainly not rank in front of the big brands.
We're a small eCommerce company and have historically ranked Google positions 1-4 for many of our keywords (a year or two ago)... but now no where near this any more.
-
We always write unique content for our products of usually around 300-400 words per product
-
we include our keywords in Title, meta description and H1 tags.
-
We include buyers guides and set up articles on the site and generally have a reasonable amount of good quality and always uniquely written content
-
Recently we have concentrated to ensure that page load speed is above average and Google Web Master Tools page speed gives us around 80-90 out of 100
-
We carry out linking and have always done... in the most recent past this has been weighted towards 'content for links' to gain purely incoming links (although in the early days from 2005 we did swap links with other web masters as well as write and publish on article sites etc).
-
product category pages have an intro piece of text that includes the key phrases for that page and is placed as close to the body tag as possible.
From what I understand if you are hit by Panda or Penguin the drop off is invariably over night, but we have not seen this... more of a gradual decline over the last year or two (although there was a bit of a downward blip on Panda update 20). Now we're lucky to be on page 2 for what were our main keywords / phrases such as "portable DVD players" or "portable DVD player"... in front of us in every position is a big national brand.. and certainly on page 1 it is purely only a big brand in every postion. They don't have great info from what we can see for these keywords and certainly don't give as much info as we do. For the phrase "portable DVD player" our portable DVD accessories page ranks better than our actual portable DVD player category page... which we also can't understand? This is our portable DVD category page: http://www.3wisemonkeys.co.uk/portable-dvd-players-car
Currently we're starting to produce 2 minute product demo videos for as many of our product detail pages as we can and we plan to host these on something such as Vimeo so that content will be unique to our site (rather than YouTube) in order to give us a different format of unique content on many of our product detail pages to improve rankings (and conversion rates as the same time ideally).
So ... I am hoping that some one out there can point us in the right direction and shed some light on our declining positions. Are we doing or have done something wrong... or is it in these post Panda / Penguin days extremely difficult for a small business to beat the big brands as Google believes these are what every one wants to see when shopping?
Thanks for any comments and / or help.

Hey Jason,
I have been studying this SEO stuff for the past 10 months ( so I am no expert), and the conclusion I am coming to is that you have to play Google's game (as it seems like you are doing) while constantly looking for other sources of traffic/ customers.
My feeling is that Google wants the commercial landscape to essentially look like a shopping mall -- minimal effort to find what you need (Hmmm.... I need a new DVD player. Oh there's Best Buy! I'll go there, I've heard of that place). So small business needs to try to differentiate as it does in the real world
But just the eye test on your homepage...(take this with a grain of salt, I'm just trying to help)
i don't like the vertical "Sale" banners they look cheesy, and the moving reviews -- 1) they are too fast/ impossible to read and 2) I always look at Amazon and Zappos, and what do they do? Reviews = Stars. Also if I'm nitpicking, the product photos on the homepage are a bit on the small side
Also this product:
Denver TCU-203C portable stereo with USB - Pink
is listed as out of stock ...so? what do if I want that? Is there something similar?
Just some thoughts...
-
I´m watching you on 9º position for "portable DVD players"

would love to hear what folks have to say about this as I have seen the same issue with our website for the main target keywords in our industry. We went from top 3 to graudual delcline to page 3 and for a couple of words we are completely gone. Like you we specialize in our products and have always outranked the big brands - not any more. Google must push up who spends most on ads

I have been investigating this problem for some time now and there must be a technical problem. My posts seem to be ignored by google. Can anyone advise me on what tools to use and how to find out what is going wrong

Hybrid page showing in Google search results
Hello Mozzers We have two pages showing on page 1 of Google for the search term 'inset day sessions' This url is the correct page which we want site visitors to see. http://www.laughology.co.uk/teacher-workshop-s-inset-days/inset-days The other page page seems to be a strange hybrid of how the page used to look and the new content we have included. It's a mess and we don't want visitors clicking on this link. There is no menu link to this page on the site, but it is showing as a link In SH404sef http://www.laughology.co.uk/schools/teacher-workshop-s-inset-days/ What is the best way to deal with this? Thanks Ian nKOHYbn

Does having no content on a mobile page have effect on the ranking.
We are about to go live with a mobile version of our webshop, mobile users will be shown an alternative version of the desktop page. At the moment we have little to no content on the mobile pages; how will this effect our ranking? (desktop and mobile page have the same URL and meta, only the "body" is different)

Should I remove these pages from the Google index?
Hi there, Please have a look at the following URL http://www.elefant-tours.com/index.php?callback=imagerotator&gid=65&483. It's a "sitemap" generated by a Wordpress plug-in called NextGen gallery and it maps all the images that have been added to the site through this plugin, which is quite a lot in this case. I can see that these "sitemap" pages have been indexed by Google and I'm wondering whether I should remove these or not? In my opinion these are pages that a search engine would never would want to serve as a search result and pages that a visitor never would want to see. Attracting any traffic through Google images is irrelevant in this case. What is your advice? Block it or leave it indexed or something else?

Hi guys, I would like your opinions on this site www.colourbanners.co.uk Seems to be ranking for 'colour banners' but has dropped for keywords such as 'banners' and 'pvc banners' which were ranking well. There has been no manual actions against the site so im assuming this is an algo penalty? Any ideas/suggestions what could be causing this? regards Gerry

No confirmation page on Google's Disavow links tool?
I've been going through and doing some spring cleaning on some spammy links to my site. I used Google's Disavow links tool, but after I submit my text file, nothing happens. Should I be getting some sort of confirmation page? After I upload my file, I don't get any notifications telling me Google has received my file or anything like that. It just takes me back to this page: http://cl.ly/image/0S320q46321R/Image 2013-04-26 at 11.15.25 AM.png Am I doing something wrong or is this what everyone else is seeing too?

Big on-page changes: all at once or little by little?
Hello, I have a website with bad urls (http://www.domain.com/site/page.php will become http://www.domain.com/page.php) and bad titles (keyword stuffing) and I have to fix all of them. Should I change the urls (and, yes, make the proper 301 redirects) and get crawled by the S.E., before I give a unique title for each page or viceversa? Or maybe shoud I do everything at once? What's the best practice to minimize the ranking drop and how long will it take to resume (and increase) the previous ranking?

Google counting numbers of products on category pages - what about pagination ?
Hi there, Whilst checking out the SERPS, as you do, I noticed that where our category page appears, google now seems to be counting the number of products (what it calls items) on the product page and displaying this in the 1st part of the description (see image attached). My problem is we employ pagination, so that our category page will have 15 items on it, then there are paginated results for the rest, with either ?page=2 or page-2/ etc. appended to the URL. Although this is only a minor issue, I was just wondering if there was a way to change the number of products displayed on that page to be the entire number of products in that category, is there a microformat markup or something that can over-ride what google has detected ? Furthermore is this system of pagination effective ? I have considered using javascript pagination, such that all products would be loaded on to the one page but hidden until 'paginated', but I was worried about having hidden elements on the page, and also the impact of load times. Although I think this may solve the problem and display the true number of products in a section! Any help much appreciated, Stuart b4urme.jpg
