Link juice retained when using nofollows?
-
Is it still true that when linking to other sites with nofollow links, the juice is retained on your page? Or is the juice lost, but just not passed on to the other site?
I found this whiteboard friday, but it's pretty old (2007): http://www.seomoz.org/blog/whiteboard-friday-the-juice-is-loose
Looking forward to your thoughts!

Thanks a lot for your responses guys! It's now all clear to me!

Yup Paddy is right.
I would read this blog post about PageRank Sculpting that Matt Cutts wrote http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/pagerank-sculpting/
And I also found this video useful http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R4IE4WLPLZQ&feature=share&list=PL841CB8F9F31BF5D5

Example 1 is mostly correct, but jazy point is that it would be more like this:
5 Nofollows: 0 juice each but 47.5 thrown away (2.5 naturally lost)
5 Follows: 9.5 juice each (47.5 juice total, 2.5 naturally lost)
Total 47.5, with 47.5 thrown out and 5 naturally lost
-
Thanks for your response again!
If Paddys Displays is correct though (Example 1), then the follow links would get 10 juice right? Instead of 19,5?
5 Nofollows: 0 juice each but 50 thrown away
5 Follows: 10 juice each (50 juice total)
So 50 juice is given away, and 50 juice is lost? Total 100.
Or is it what you're saying (example 2)
5 nofollow: 0 juice each but 2,5 juice thrown away
5 follows: 19,5 juice each (total 97,5)
Total: 97,5 juice given away, 2,5 juice lost. Total 100
-
In your example the links that do not have the nofollow attribute would get 20 each.
Well actually it would be something like 19.5 each because they take a tiny bit off everytime it's passed on (otherwise the system wouldnt work mathematically).
Paddys Displays is correct, ignore what I'm saying if I'm confusing you - apologies.
-
Hello both, thank you very much for your response.
One think still isn't clear though: Paddy Displays says that juice is lost (thrown out of the window), while Jazy states that the juice is not lost, but passed on to the other follow links on the page. Which of both is correct?
So say there is 100 juice. One of my pages contains 5 follow links and 5 nofollow links. Do the 5 follow links get 10 juice each, or 20? And if I'm right, there is no juice retained?
-
It all changed in 2008/09, and link sculpting in this way does not work anymore. page authority is shared equally to all links, but for no-follow its not passed, just just thrown out the window (not retained)
-
Link Juice or PankRank is shared between all the links on your page equally that don't have nofollow on them.
I found this video which still seems relevant http://www.seomoz.org/blog/whiteboard-friday-matt-cutts-on-nofollow
I hope that helps you.

Should this site be using Rel=Canonical VS No Index
I'm currently working on this site https://www.visitliverpool.com/accommodation I've been watching this video by Rand - https://moz.com/blog/rel-canonical but it's still unclear in this scenario. if you use the search facility "check availability" half way down the page the results page (urlparams) are no indexed. Would it be better to index and canonicalise? There is no similar content but I'm concerned that no index will remove the ability for semantic content to be visible to google. LADkajY

What is the best way to buy expired similar domain names and point them at your site to garner link juice?
what is the best way to buy expired similar domain names and point them at your site to garner link juice? there are lots of domains with good links pointing to them that are now expired and those links would be in the same subject as your site and a good addition to your current links. I've heard that 301 redirected links only pass half value but even that would be a great addition to your domain authority if you could purchase those domains and 301 them to your site? what are everyone's thoughts on this and how do i go about this? Thanks in advance mozzers! Ron

Need help linking Youtube account to Google+ profile? (please read description, thank you)
Our Youtube was managed by a SEO company. We are no longer working with them, but separated on amicable terms. I want to link our youtube account to our company owner's personal google+ profile. However, when I try to do so, the only option Youtube allows me is the former SEO company's google+ account as the only link option. Can someone tell me how I can link our youtube account to our company owner's g+? I can still contact our former SEO company if the need to 'release' ownership. Thank you!

E-Book Versus Whitepaper - Which Term to Use?
So I have read several articles about the use of terms e-books versus whitepapers. Both pros and cons to use for each. Do you have any experience on which has worked better for you - converted more traffic, gotten more interest, etc? Would love to hear your experience on these terms. Thanks.

Unnatural links
Realizing that there are several links pointing to my domain, and most of them I do not recognize, who seem to have been made by a competitor in order to hurt me in Google, how should I to proceed?

External Linking and SEO strategy
I run a business where we offer music lessons in student's homes throughout a local area. We currently rank for phrases like piano lessons + city, or voice lessons + city because we have a page specifically made for each keyword + city combination. The result is a very spammy looking site. I'm afraid that eventually this duplicate content will be penalized especially when we move into hundreds of cities throughout the US. With that in mind, I came up with a system that would give each page original content specific to the keyword + city. Whenever we hire a new teacher the teacher must fill out a short teaching philosophy which will be displayed next to their picture on pages where they can teach. I go through the teaching philosophy and add a keyword or two for search engines as well. For example someone who can teach piano lessons in Los Angeles would appear on the piano lessons in Los Angeles page. This way I have some more original content. I am also going to systematically ask for testimonials from all of our customers which will then be displayed on the respective pages as well. Therefore the more teachers and students we get, the more content we have available on our site. With that said, I'm still trying to think of ways to make a better user experience with more specific content on each page. Recently I was looking through whiteboard Fridays and found this video: http://www.seomoz.org/blog/external-linking-good-for-seo-whiteboard-friday I thought it may be a good idea if I went out and found perhaps local sheet music stores and added them to my database. Then I would link out to them on specific pages, saying "this is where you can go to buy sheet music" or "buy a trumpet here". It would be a lot more elegant than that, but hopefully you get the idea. My entire site is database driven so as soon as I put the new stores information in the database it could show up on the instrument/city pages within 10 miles of the store, or something like that. I'm posting this for opinions. Is this a good strategy? Some of my worries are that these other businesses almost all provide lessons in their store, so they would be direct competitors. I also really don't want to detract from what I'm selling, which are lessons. I'm worried about conversion rates mostly. The positives to the approach though may be that I can get some good linking to these individual pages from these stores (if they'll link to a competitor), which is something that would be very difficult to do for these deep instrument+city pages. Also I'm thinking if I included the stores physical address then perhaps search engines would be more encouraged that the instrument+city page actually represents a local service. Any ideas and thoughts are greatly appreciated!

Are Creating Free WordPress and Joomla Themes a good link building strategy?
Hello Everyone, I have been analyzing various link building strategies recently. One tactic that always seems to come up is to give stuff away. I wanted to get everyones thoughts on creating Wordpress and Joomla Themes, then giving them away as a link building strategy? The goal would be to create some stellar themes, then place our website link in the footer with some text that would read "Wordpress Theme by Pete Juratovic" and Pete Juratovic would point to my website. Is this a good tactic, or would this look like spam? If spam, why? Why would this tactic be any different then creating a great infographic as a link building stratedgy? Pete

How would you Oustsource Link Building if your budget is $200?
Hi, We all know that Link building is a tough job which requires persistent effort , and for a content creator it takes focus away from his job , which is "creating content". So content producers resort to "outsourcing" their link building. Now, unlike business/ enterprise , professional SEO's cost a fortune and beyond reach of an upcoming content creator. So he/she resorts to cheaper link building mediums like Forum Posts , Blog Comments , Article submissions , automate bookmarking site submissions etc. All the above software relatively do not cost much ($50-$100) BUT create links which do not have much value and hence not desirable. ============ My question is - ============= How can a content producer (like me) with a budget of meager $200 spend his money to get "most value" out of his link building activities
