Modifying Content to Avoid Duplicate Content Issues
-
We are planning to leverage specific posts from a US-based blog for our own Canadian blog (with permission, of course) but are aware that this can cause duplicate content issues.
We're willing to re-write as much or as little as we must from the initial blog posts to avoid duplicate content issues but I have no idea just how much we will need to re-write. Is there some guideline for this (e.g., 25% of content must be re-written)? I've been unable to find anything.
Thank you in advance!

You definitely have the right approach. It's amazing how many people think they ought to rank for content even when it is duplicated on other sites. By adding some value to the content and making it more or less unique will only pay dividends.

Sounds like you and your team have just the right attitude towards this. I'm sure it'll be a great success!
Have a good weekend!

Thanks Tom for the very helpful reply.
The tools are great! I'm currently writing guidelines for the copywriters and in that document, I need to provide a guide on how much copy will need to be updated. The tools would work well as a 'check' to make sure the copyrwriters have updated enough of the content but I'm unsure what direction I should be giving upfront.
The video with Rand is really useful though (especially #4)! This will be helpful with internal discussions around how there is no 'magic' percentage number.
Thank you,
Emma

Thanks. We've positioned this as an SEO opportunity for a client, with the caveat that we would need to solve for the canonical issues. So yes, we do want to help our own rankings.
Currently will be targeting different keywords (essentially products) and different links as well. We can definitely change the blog titles, header titles, updating the main copy to be more 'Canadian' and focus on a slightly different angle. Current content would be considered 'lifestyle' content so the main idea should remain but everything else is fair game for us to change, if need be.

I'm presuming that because you are willing to largely re-write this content that you actually want to rank for it yourselves. As such a sizeable re-write would be required especially the blog titles, and you may even want to to target different keywords and long tail keywords. All the while bear in mind that quality and uniqueness is essential.
Alternatively, you could just use the content from the US-based blog directly on your Canadian blog but specify the US blog URL as the canonical version. This would avoid any duplication issue and yet give you some useful content on your site, even if you would never rank for it in SERPs.

Well, there are a number of tools that will give you a rough idea of how 'unique' the copy is, such as PlagSpotter, Plagium and of course Copyscape.
Some people may argue that if it passes Copyscape it will be unique enough, but I don't think this is necessarily true.
If you watch this really useful Whiteboard Friday from Rand in January, you'll see the need for each bit of your content to have unique value, in order to help it rank and pull in organic traffic. To my mind, I feel that the content needs to a new take on things where it can be and to appeal to your specific demographic, which of course differs between Canadians and Americans.
If I were you, I'd try and rewrite as much as possible. I'm sure things just can't be changed, but try and create the content in a different style and approach to before in order add a unique value. At the very least, you will be able to A/B test the difference in response between your US and Canadian blogs and you might find that you've come up with copy and content that produces a better response, or one that's more akin to what you're looking for.
Hope this helps.

What are some good examples of content marketing done well for clothing online retailers?
Hello, I am working on planning for a redesign of a eCommerce clothing website. Looking for some inspiration on some good examples of clothing companies using their content well. The design does not have to be the best, it can be just very well done use of blog type content or video. Thank you in advance for taking time to respond!

Same content but translated. Penalization?
Hi There, I’ve got a question. There are two website that are under the same proprietor but must stay not related (different brand, different IP, different country, different language). The question is: Does google penalize one of the site if I entirely translate the content from site 1 to site2? Thank you very much for you input 😉

Duplicate Content
Hi All, I am doing work for a rug company that acts as a third party. They have close to 4,000+ products. Each rug belongs to a collection. The collection has one main description that is the same throughout every rug in the collection. Ex. One Collection has 15 rugs, all with the same description. Should I take the time and change every single description? I think the answer is yes but I wanted another opinion. Thanks

Duplicate content problem
Hi, i have a serious problem. I work in joomla and sometimes it can be annoying. When you set up a category, you need to give it a name and maybe this is a huge error on my part as i did not really think about the names beforehand. The situation i have now is, all my sections are in front page mode, but because you have to name the categories in order to write articles, i am now left with a load of blog sections such as http://www.in2town.co.uk/benidorm/benidorm-news Now i have a main section called Benidorm news so i have duplicate sections, i want to know if i can redirect the http://www.in2town.co.uk/benidorm/benidorm-news to go to the main benidorm section or if there is a better way of doing it. i have left this blod layout the way it is to show you, but the others i just have it where it shows the title and then goes to the article. I work in k2 and would be grateful if anyone can let me know the solution to this as semoz is showing that i have many duplicate titles and content many thanks

Marking our content as original, where the rel=author tag might not be applied
Hello, Can anyone tell, if it is possible to protect text –type content without the rel=author tag? We host a business listing site, where, apart from the general contact information, we have also started to write original 800+ character-long unique and original contents for the suppliers, where we expect visits, so rankings should be increased. My issue is that this is a very competitive business, and content crawling is really an everyday practice. Of course, I would like to keep my original content or at least mark it as mine for Google. The easiest way would be the author tag, but the problem is, that I do not want our names and our photos to be assigned to these contents, because from one hand, we are not acknowledged content providers on our own (no bio and whatsoever), and on the other hand, we provide contents for every sort of businesses, so just having additional links to our other contents, might not help readers to get what they want. I also really do not think that a photo of me could help increase the CTR from the SERP:) What we currently do, is that we submit every major fresh content through url submission in WMT, hoping that first indexing might help. We have only a handful of them within a day, so not more than 10. Yes, I could perhaps use absolute links, but this one is not a feasible scenario in all cases, and about DMCA, as our programmer says, what you can see on the internet, that you can basically own. So finally, I do not mind our contents being stolen, as I can’t possibly prevent this. I want however our original content to be recognized as ours by Google, even after the stealing is done. (Best would be an ’author tag for business’, so connected to our business Google+ page, but I am not aware, this function can be used this way.) Thank you in advance for all of you, sharing your thoughts with me on the topic.

Panda and Thin Content
Hi Guys, I have a quick question. We have a website and in the wake of Panda, we are worried about our video news section. We produce about 10 videos news a month on a templated page and beneath it is a small extract of the words spoken in the video. The text below each video is about 180 words each. Currently the video news section makes up and 1/5 of the content on the site. I.e Out of 500 pages, we have about 100 video news articles. Should I be worried about being wacked by Panda for this? Can I tell Google this is a news section?
