Link Anchor Text post Penguin 2.0
-
I have heard a great variety of views concerning the anchor text used for link building post Penguin 2.0 but have yet to hear some consensus. Some say the anchor text for external links should be different than internal. Some say brand should be used on external and keywords on internal. Some say brand and a variety of keywords on external. Any thoughts on a strategy consistent with google expectations and guidelines?

Hi Jesse,
aHrefs does an awesome job visualizing their anchor text reports, I agree. We're working on updating how we visualize data in Open Site Explorer in our long term plans. Lots of cool things in all of our products.
That said, the quality of the data in the OSE anchor text report is damn fine

I'm going to sidestep this question and say that the profile Google prefers is one that is earned, and not built.
Anytime you are able to choose the anchor text of your external links, this is a "built" link and no matter how much you diversify, you risk creating a pattern that Google can detect - if not now, then in the future.
The external sites that allow you to choose your own anchor text, in most cases (but not all) often are not the best link targets.
Is this realistic? For a lot of link builders, probably not. But the key is to diversify as much as possible. A lot of folks will tell you silly rules like 20% branded anchor text, but those rules have changed so much in the past 2 years, where will they be a year from now? Google keeps changing the rules to crack down on unearned links.
Regardless, I'll get off my soapbox and leave you with a couple of posts/videos I made about the subject of anchor text:

Hope this helps! Best of luck with your SEO.

It should be a combination of all of the above, in a ratio that normal citations would give you - just like the Nike one is
There is no perfect or correct answer. Look at what natural looks like and model that

This makes sense Stephen if you have a recognized brand. What about a real estate agent who is licensed through an agency and who works in a specific market? Should the "brand" be name only, name / agency, or name / agency / market area? This one I think is a bit tougher?
For example: Joe Blow, Joe Blow; XXX Realty, or Joe Blow: XXX Realty / market area?
thanks

Am I the only one who finds OSE anchor text report to be a bit... lacking? I mean.. compared to ahrefs.com anyway?
Why does ahrefs so handily win this battle? I don't want to have to convince my boss to buy me an ahrefs membership so I'd like an excuse not to.
-
I thought of recommending that Oleg, but often the people in a niche may also be ranking on the basis of spam, or may not yet have been caught.
If you have well known brands in a niche, then I think that is OK, otherwise I think the megabrands that have no need for linkbuilding are better signals to follow
-
I would replace Nike, Amazon, etc. with competitors in your industry that are ranking for the keywords you want to. Different industries have different definitions of "natural" and seeing link profiles for sites who rank for your keywords would give you a better idea of what you should shoot for.
-
Do what Stephen says... then...
Go look at the backlink profile of people who come in here cryin'.
-
Go to open site explorer and put in the worlds top brands Nike, Amazon etc
That is how Google will expect a natural backlink profile to be

More than 2K dofollow links, from one site with one anchor text?
A week ago one person of our team added a link with anchor text on a web directory website PR5, but from this one link, Google indexed more than 2K links from this website with same anchor text, and then our keyword ranked first on SERP. The problem is that this clearly look like SPAM to Google, so which way is better to remove this link, with disawow tool, or to contact the web directory site owner?Could anyone give me any advice for this?

Anchor text for deep links?
Hi,
Link Building | | rayvensoft
I was wondering if anybody had some advice on what to do for deep link anchor text in the post penguin world? For the homepage, I am going with almost exclusively branded text with only small variations once in a while. For the deep links I was thinking of doing a mix of branded text with some additional text such as: "My Brand Name" + Red or "My Brand Name" + Blue Does anybody know if this is the best way to go, or is there any other advice? Thanks in advance.0 -
What should be the anchor text in a footer?
For anchor text that is in a footer, should it be a keyword or the domain name www.example.com or Keyword for Example.com? We have a parent company that has other subsidiary companies and they want to have links in the footer that has domain name for link building purposes. But we want them to have keywords in the anchor text instead of the domain name?

What are the pros and cons of using a link builder? Can link building be outsourced?
Hi, I have great content on my website which I would like to build external links to from other websites. I am told this will increase my domain authority and ultimately help search engine ranking positions. I have very limited time in my hands and now thinking of outsourcing the link building component to a specialist. Is this a good way of doing it? Could you recommend professional link builders?

Anchor text diversity - post penguin.
Hi, It seems that achor text diversity is hugely important post penguin but what's the best strategy? What kind of anchor text should I be going for? As I understand it more that 60% of links with the keywords in trigger a google flag. For example are the following good examples for the term 'wedding singer'? local wedding singer, best wedding singer, wedding singer website, hire wedding singer. Would these cause triggers in google as all contain the keyword 'wedding singer'? Or should I be going for: click here, visit us, listen now, view a profile Obviously these words don't contain the anchor text 'wedding singer' but with a few exact match #wedding singer' anchor texts and good on page SEO will this mix give better results?

Text Link Ads - have you worked with them?
I work with a large group of community sites and we were approached by a company called Text Link Ads to purchase links on our sites for SEO purposes. This means we can't add "nofollow" and the resulting page is crawl-able. This goes directly against Google's policy but I think it would be tough to find out exactly what we're doing. It could be a great revenue source and this company has many, many sites they work with. That said, this sounds like what you say right before something bad happens. So, two part question: Has anyone worked with this company before? And should these links be avoided or are they not so bad? Thanks in advance!

I don't know if i should post my articles to other forums or sharing sites to create back links?
All the articles on my blog are written on my own. I write about 5 ones per month. I don't know if i should post my articles to other forums or sharing sites to create back links? I have heard that it may cause adverse effect because my blog will be crawled more slowly than those forums, so Google will consider the articles on my blog (as) copies. Is that right?

Article Links
I write and publish artcles. Typically I publish them on a few top article sites like EZineArticles. The articles then get picked up by other sites, often numbering in the hundreds. All of the articles are published with a link back to our website using a keyword. Are there any SEO risks in this type of link proliferation?
