Creating the META title tag?

I am having a hard time figuring out what the best META title tag is for my site. I have a deal blog that focuses on Amazon deals but I also write articles, top ten lists, etc. It is baby and mom related. Is there a tutorial for this? Should I just experiment and watch my organic search results? TIA!

Thank you! I just realized I hadn't actually changed my title tag for my home page so I just did. (Conflict between Thesis and Wordpress SEO plugin) I will leave it at that for awhile and hopefully it helps.

1. It doesn't have to be different. A well crafted title can be perfectly functional as the title tag and as page or article title.
2. If you can't fit your keywords into a tight, cohesive title statement, you're trying to use too many keywords
3. A long time ago, you could easily get away with endlessly messing around with title tag to see how it impacted rankings but these days, I don't really recommend it. Do your keyword research and be confident your choices are based soundly on your business objectives, the strength of page, the competitiveness of the keyword, and the available traffic for the term (keyword research is the hard part). Then create your content based on the business objective you chose your keyword for. Don't focus on the keyword--just use it as a guide as you develop your content.

Just a few quick questions if you don't mind:
1. So the title of my article should be different than my meta title? Using the same format as I do for my home page?
2. I use the format below for my home page mega title. I am using 3 keywords though, is that a big no no?
"Primary Keyword - Secondary Keyword | Brand Name"
3. How do I test out different keywords and how can I figure out which ones give me the best results?

I Agree with NoahGlaser, maintaining a consistent META TITLE of your articles really is the right way to go. Choose your title with relevant keywords, avoiding keyword stuffing. If you naturally use your keywords throughout your article, you should be good to go!

Since your new to all this, I recommend you read through this page to start getting a handle on your title tags and when that under control, branch out to some of these topics. There's a lot to learn so don't think you have to pick it all up in the first few days.

Thanks. For my articles, I do use the Wordpress SEO plugin to get it SEO optimized. I use the google keyword tool.
But I am talking about for my home page - my domain name. I am still learning the lingo, sorry. How many words can I put in the title tag? I have my website name and then right now I have a couple of keywords. But they didn't seem to do much for me and it's been a month. I am just trying to figure out how to write the best title tag for my home page.

For a generic page you should do keyword research and make your content focus around that. But write it naturally and do not stuff the keywords in there just because you can.
For your articles. make the title tag the name of your article. That is after all the title of the document. Those top ten lists and fun articles are great things to send out and do some link building with. If done properly you can obtain some good social awareness and links.

Duplicate meta and title in Google Webmaster Tools not updated?
Our canonical tags were removed by mistake for some time and our duplicate meta and title warnings in Google webmaster tools html improvements went up. We fixed the issue a week ago. I made sure the sitemap is picking up the canonical URL. Still the number went up after we fixed it (from around 5000 to around 7000 now) but when I click on details, it shows around 2000 in detail page. How long does it take for Google to update this? RB

Title tag of product page including category keyword?
I'm doing some work on a site that essentially is about giving and getting reviews. It's heirarchy has categories and products within those categories. For the title tag of the product pages, they currently have "Best {Category} | {Product} Reviews" I've advised them that they should remove the "Best {Category}" part because a) they're already targeting the category pages themselves and b) from a user perspective, the product page should just have a title tag that makes sense for that particular page (the page is not necessarily the "best" and certainly is not a series of products within that category). I wanted to post here to confirm that my advice is sound. Thanks.

Meta Description Question
Hi, Lets say you have a 1000 pages, is it ok to generate a template meta description and flip the keywords depending on the page? For example: Red Shoes page: Buy Red Shoes at amazing prices. We have a large range of Red Shoe sizes available. Blue Shoes page: Buy Blue Shoes at amazing prices. We have a large range of Blue Shoe sizes available. Thoughts?

How to handle wordpress tags
Hi fellow SEO mozzers, I am getting 'duplicate content' errors when our site is crawled, mainly down to our WordPress blog and how we have handled tags. Currently, they are being crawled and as such are regarded as duplicate pages. I have read several different articles on how to handle tags. Some suggest noindex the tag URL's. Others suggest to optimize them and allow them to be indexed since Google has confirmed they won't penalize a WordPress site for having archive pages that publish and point to the same content. It will select the best link to represent the cluster of links. Over the past few months, nearly 4% of our WordPress traffic have been referred by tag pages listed in search engines. Initially I was going to noindex the tag pages, but going on the above info I wonder should I leave them as they are? Or is the issue that having duplicate content will lead to inefficient crawling? Any views/opinions on how best to handle this?

Google Results Title Tag HELP
Can anybody tell us why Google changes your title tag in the SERP? If you check out the below link or type in 'days inn', you will see the 2nd result for www.daysinnrc.co.uk just says 'Days Inn' but on the actual site the title tag for this page is 'Days Inn UK | Days Inn | Daysinnrc.co.uk' http://www.google.co.uk/#hl=en&sclient=psy-ab&q=days+inn&oq=days+inn&gs_l=hp.3...4110.4110.4.4297.1.1.0.0.0.0.0.0..0.0...0.0...1c.1.kWVC24EnCHE&pbx=1&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_qf.&fp=7680231318a44bb0&bpcl=35466521&biw=1920&bih=934 This has happened with another site too, does anybody know why? Tag-URLs in Magento
Hello, I have got a problem concerning Tag-URLs in Magento (the URLs mentioned are just fictitious 😞 At the moment, they look something like this: (1) http://store.com/tag/product/list/tagId/1/ ... so these URLs are not search engine friendly at all. Using a Magento extension you could transform them in speaking URLs: (2) http://store.com/tag/digital-cameras What would you do if you sold, say, digital cameras and your online shop ranked high for the keyword "digital camera" with URL No. 1 (not search engine friendly). Would you transform (1) in (2) and 301 all non speaking URLs? But would you keep the high ranking for "digital camera" when 301 to URL No. (2). But, what I'm most concerned of is : There is actually a landing page (category page) for the keyword "digital camera" : http://store.com/digital-cameras. Shouldn't the last URL rank high for "digital camera"? (instead of the tag URLs). But given the situation above, does it make sense now to 301 the tag URL to the category page? I would perhaps lose my good ranking, wouldn't I? Thanks a lot for your help! Martin

Page titles and descriptions
A website has several wigets to show Each wiget with its own page The wigets mostly just vary in size How would you suggest titles be done? Example: Wiget 1ft Wiget 2ft Wiget 3 ft an so on........ Would this trigger a duplicate content issue given “Wiget” leads in the page title?
