Which Web host do you use?
-
A friend of mine has a successful website which is hosted by the company he used to use for developing his site. As he no longer uses them feels he should use it. Who do you use for hosting a small to medium sized business?
-
I prefer Rackspace Cloud. Their system is highly customizable and their Admin panel is easy to use to get yourself up and running. Support is always there when I need it, never had to wait more than a few hours for non-emergencies and they hit me back with live help when it's urgent. Pricing will depend on what you need. Dedicated or non-dedicated is really the big question here.

Thanks a lot.

I agree with Tom. Depending on type of site/traffic/objectives the best options for a hosting account can range greatly.
We use Liquid Web for hosting. They are a bit more expensive, but the server is stable/fast and the held desk is second to none.

Hi Antony,
This is a very vague question and you need to work out what it is you'll need from your web host before you can start to consider who is best to go with.
Personally, I use Eleven2 for a personal reseller account for my own blogs and friends blogs. But I use FireHost for commercial websites such as Magento hosting etc.
With Eleven2 I have a cPanel which I can set up everything from DNS zones to email accounts to installing online software.
But what I suggest you do is find out exactly what it is you need your web host to deliver and then ask that question again for a more precise answer, rather than just people (including myself) giving you a company name on a biased opinion just because it's the company they use and it works for them. E.g. I drive a Ford so I will only recommend a Ford to a new buyer looking for a car.
Tom

General questions about implementing hreflang using XML sitemap
I created another thread regarding hreflang sitemaps. However, this one is more general and doesn't cover multiple sitemaps for different localizations so I think it's reasonable creating a new thread. We are trying to implement hreflang using XML sitemap. We have localized content for a few countries, but only 1/3 of the content is 'duplicate' localized content. How should this be presented in the sitemap? Can we have some urls with hreflang-tags and some without? Also, where should this be located? In the usual sitemap file at site.com/sitemap.xml or should we create a different sitemap site.com/hreflang.xml where we just paste all hreflang-info? And if it should be in /hreflang.xml - can we have the same URL twice (in both current sitemap and hreflang sitemap)?

How to optimize Wordpress.org hosted blogs
I've got a blog I'm working on that isn't self-hosted. I've attached a screenshot of the message I get if I try to install any plugins. I really want to block archive, author, tag, category, etc pages but I can't seem to find a way since there's no server for me to block via robots.txt or .htaccess and I can't actually install these plugins which would give me the ability to do it. Any suggestions? vQfnt

Canonical Tag when using Ajax and PhantomJS
Hello, We have a site that is built using an AJAX application. We include the meta fragment tag in order to get a rendered page from PhantomJS. The URL that is rendered to google from PhantomJS then is www.oursite.com/?escaped_fragment= In the SERP google of course doesnt include the hashtag in the URL. So my question, with this setup, do i still need a canonical tag and if i do, would the canonical tag be the escaped fragment URL or the regular URL? Much Appreciated!

Is there a reason why a host would be reluctant to give up Cpanel access info?
Granted, a strange question here... My client lost her cpanel login credentials, or never bothered to get them (she didn't even know she had a hosting account). Apparently she has a friend who is hosting her website for her, free of charge. I need to get into the cpanel, but they are being extremely difficult. The client asked them and they didn't want to give it to her either. Still trying, but is there any reason why they would be so difficult? How does it benefit them? It can't be because they're afraid of losing her account because she isn't paying them anything. Totally confused by this. Any ideas?

Will using tabs on my page for navigation hurt SEO
Currently we have tabs on some pages that are set so that the page shows all the content for search engines on one page, but the user sees only part of the content until they click a tab. We are unable to use title tags for the tabbed areas. We think this hurts us from an SEO standpoint. We are getting only 3 keyword where we could have 12 if they were individual pages. What is the thought on using tabs and is it okay? Has there been any case studies on this?

What is the verdict on using negative text indent on a slider
Hi, I am trying to work out the best way of developing a slider on a page which may include text that I'd like indexed by search engines. One method I've read about is to use negative text indent, but people seem undecided on whether this is a good / bad / fine technique with regards to SEO. I'd be interested in hearing the communities views and experience on this. Thanks in advance.

Using Blogger.com
I have a client that is currently using blogger.com for their blog. I don't have much experience with this site as I have mostly used Wordpress in the past. Are there any good SEO plugins/tools for this site? Thanks!

Domain Authority and Page Rank concerns when using CNAME
In the event that a person uses a service like Blogger or a photo service like Photo Shelter, but use a CNAME to resolve example.blogspot.com or example.photoshelter.com to example.com, how does that affect Domain Authority and Page Rank in real world results, and how does it affect the user when/if they leave the service and establish their own site? For example: A client has a blog on Blogger called johndoephotography.blogspot.com but uses CNAME so what is shown is johndoephotography.com. The Domain Authority is quite high since he is really on Yahoo's domain. How does that affect SERP rankings? Is it ignored, since it is merely a sub-domain, or does the parent domain actually give a benefit? The second part: If John Doe decides to host his own WordPress blog, what happens to that domain authority? Has he lost it all?
