How Much Does a Missing www. 301 redirect hurt a business?

We're preparing a report for a potential client, and are trying to figure out a way to estimate rankings gains. One of the major issues is a lack of a 301 redirect for non-www. domains to www. domains.
We checked and there's no canonicalization, so it's a clear issue. According to Google, the non-www. links from 8 different domains. The www. version of the website has links from 248 different domains. Nearly all anchor text is branded, as they've never had any SEO work done before.
Does anyone have a suggestion for approximating benefits of setting up their .htaccess file correctly? Would the benefits even be that great? We're of course advising additional things, but we just want to be more certain about this step's SEO-boost.

Thanks! We were of course definitely going to fix it - I was just wondering if anyone had ever tested out a quantifiable answer for how much it would help. But as you pointed out, it's usually just one small change among many, so it's slightly hard to tell exactly. Much appreciate your thorough explanation!

Correcting canonical issues is just a sound SEO best practice and has the following clear benefits:
- It consolidates PageRank, DA and Page authority through one uniform URL structure
- It eliminates possible on-site duplicated issues by preventing two version of the same page from arising.
- It consolidates social shares through one URL structure
- It consolidates incoming links into one structure ensuring you get full authority to both www. and non-www URLs.
- It's user-friendly, and ensures that bookmarking and linking is done uniformly.
- It's a W3C best design practice and helps "future-proof" your URL structure.
If you want to "quantify" this to your clients all the above is where I'd start. Even though Google and Bing both make it easy to physically choose "how" you want your site to display in search results, hiccups still occur. And again, if you are indexed by your www. URLs, but are still accumulating links and social shares to your non-WWW URLs, you absolutely won't get the full algorithmic ranking benefit for these URLs until you put the redirects in place.
In sum, this is just a smart SEO practice and is a MUST correct item on any SEO audit checklist. I've seen situations were putting in the .htaccess file in place or adding server side redirects has immediately increased a site's PageRank and overall DA authority. This is usually the norm.

Ranking at 2 and 3 for a Desired Keyword - But Missing #1
I have a keyword I usually rank #1 for "Maui Beach Wedding" that I am now ranking 2 and 3 for with two separate pages below: My home page: https://simplemauiwedding.net and the below internal page I am linking from my home page that I really want that term to rank for. https://simplemauiwedding.net/beach-wedding-packages What is the best way to pass the authority from one to another for this particular keyword. I want this URL https://simplemauiwedding.net/beach-wedding-packages to rank for the term, not my home page which has a link pointing to this page from my home page which I was hoping would point the authority to it for the term. How much copy should there be on an e-commerce category page?
I'm not looking for a precise number, obviously. I'm more interested in a general range. More text means more long-tail and synonym opportunities, but of course you don't want too much copy above the fold, pushing your products down. Maybe you can get away with a short paragraph or two at the top of the page. You can always put more copy below the products, but in a recent SEOmoz e-commerce webinar, the presenter seemed to think that was silly and unnecessary. He even suggested that the algo might intentionally ignore text below products, since it's clearly not intended to be read. What do you think?

Quick Question on Redirects
This might be a silly question, but one important enough for me to ensure that I understand the best practice of URL redirects... I'm thinking of changing my URL's and hierachy of some of my WP subpages around, in order to logically fit the keyword into the url and place the subpage closer to the root domain. My question is, when doing this, can I simply edit the URL and create a redirect after the fact, essentially killing the old URL. Or, do I create the new page with the updated URL and hierarchy, keeping the old page live and intact, but have that 301 redirect to its new corresponding destination? Thanks

Www.sitename.com or sitename.com?
A client of mine's site is currently sitename.com. www.sitename.com redirects to the non-www URL and the canonical is using the non-www URL. This is a fairly new site and there aren't many existing inbound links. Is there a benefit to switching this?

301 Re-directing a page
Hi, My website is appearing on page 1 of Google for a specific keyword, however when clicking on the search result, the page is out of date.
