What software do you use/work within for SEO?

Hi,
Our site was put together in Dreamweaver and I'm not great at using html so I use Contribute to modify the info on our site.
There are some limitations using Contribute so I'm wondering what other people use.
Thanks for your input!

Thanks! I'll explore html some more.

Hi Kevin,
Thanks for your response! It certainly wouldn't hurt for me to become more fluent using html. I have learned a little over the years but my SEO work doesn't get as much attention (yet!) as I'd like it to...it's a part of our marketing mix but a pretty small percentage.
I've looked at Lynda.com before. I'll have to see if there's a good course for my beginner level.
Thanks again!
Karl

Hi Bradley,
Thanks a lot for this answer! We (me and my designer) are slowly building a WP site to replace our current CSS site. It was this SEO improvement in mind we started this but the building has been pretty slow-going.
I've looked at the Yoast plugin and we will get that added into the new site.
Of course it wouldn't hurt if I was more fluent in html...just haven't made the time to work on that recently.
Thanks again,
Karl

It's helpful to use Dreamweaver with the visual and code views showing together - it helps you see what you are doing.
It would help you to learn basic HTML and there's plenty of free help online.
We use CMS now but sometimes I wish I could go back to sites editable in Dreamweaver for the ability to have more control.

If you're not great at HTML, then perhaps you should consider having your site converted to WordPress. The initial cost will definitely be outweighed by the long-term benefits.
WordPress will allow you to edit and add new content with little or no HTML/CSS knowledge. You'll be able to use a WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) interface to add text and style it however you see fit.
If you install the WordPress SEO by Yoast plugin, you'll be able to update the title tag, meta description tag by post, set up open graph meta tags, the meta robots tag, and much much more - again - all without any HTML knowledge.

In the way of editors, I typically use notepad++ and Dreamweaver. I find hand coding is sometimes the best way of editing things.
I think to be "good" at SEO, someone should have understanding of HTML/CSS. Lynda has some great courses on how to get started.

On-page SEO
This is a question for the organic SEO experts, once you added the main keyword that you want to rank for in the homepage title, meta title plus meta description, perhaps once or twice in the text on the homepage. How often do you then write it in the content marketing, say blog posts, we want to rank higher on Google for "SEO agencies Cardiff" however if you mention this in the blog posts too much say once a week, this could lead to over optimisation issues?

SEO can id and class be used in H1?
Can ID and class be used in my H1 tag. I realize best case would be to change it, but it's going to require a change order from the ecommerce company to fix their sloppy code. Will this hurt seo? Example:

Any idea how Google is doing this? Is it schematic? http://techcrunch.com/2014/02/28/google-adds-full-restaurant-menus-to-its-search-results-pages/
Google is now showing menus on select searches. Any idea how they are getting this information? I would like to make sure my clients get visibility this way.

Appropriate Use of Rel Canonical
When I'm checking my page on SEOmoz should I use http://www. or http:// or www. or just keyword.com? And I get this for my check Appropriate Use of Rel Canonical Moderate fix <dl> <dt>Canonical URL</dt> <dd>XXX</dd> <dt>Explanation</dt> <dd>If the canonical tag is pointing to a different URL, engines will not count this page as the reference resource and thus, it won't have an opportunity to rank. Make sure you're targeting the right page (if this isn't it, you can reset the target above) and then change the canonical tag to reference that URL.</dd> <dt>Recommendation</dt> <dd>We check to make sure that IF you use canonical URL tags, it points to the right page. If the canonical tag points to a different URL, engines will not count this page as the reference resource and thus, it won't have an opportunity to rank. If you've not made this page the rel=canonical target, change the reference to this URL. NOTE: For pages not employing canonical URL tags, this factor does not apply.</dd> <dd>I have absolutely NO idea what this means 😞

Use of
Hi Everyone, Encountered this NOHTMLINDEX tag within the section of a website and I am not really sure how it affects the performance of the website and its use. This meta robots tag has been used on numerous pages like the home page, content pages and forum threads. Is it good to keep it there or should it be removed and why? Thanks in advance! Steve

4XX comments/feed/
I have an error in my SEOMoz crawl report is a 4XX client error on two of my websites, in both cases the error is coming from the link on my wordpress blog which is http://www.techelectricity.com/blog/comments/feed/ and http://blog.rangeroffroad.com/comments/feed/ (comments/feed/ is always the problem) Should I just ignore this error because it's supposed to open your RSS reader and not a link, or is this really an error I should address? thanks!!
