Is Google indexing something I can't see on my page title?
-
When I do a search for my businesses website (colourpages.com) it returns a listing which is great but the title tag includes Hull Colour Pages which is our old brand name - we changed to colourpages.com 2 years ago yet Hull Colour Pages is still pulling through on the title tag.
I have checked the source and it's as follows:
<title>Plumbers in Hull - Reviews - colourpages.com</title>
I have attached a photo which shows the issue - http://imgur.com/Cva3001
Is Google indexing it from old history that is no longer visible or am I missing something?

Hey
Google will rewrite page titles when they believe the rewritten title provides a better or more accurate description of your site. This may be due to what they see as poor page titles or that the revision makes the title closer to users search query so they would be more likely to click through.
Some stated reasons for doing this are:
- Titles are particularly short
- Titles are shared across large parts of your site
- Titles appear to be mostly a collection of keywords
Here is a quote from Google on why they do this:
"If we’ve detected that a particular result has one of the above issues with its title, we may try to generate an improved title from anchors, on-page text, or other sources. However, sometimes even pages with well-formulated, concise, descriptive titles will end up with different titles in our search results to better indicate their relevance to the query. There’s a simple reason for this: the title tag as specified by a webmaster is limited to being static, fixed regardless of the query. Once we know the user’s query, we can often find alternative text from a page that better explains why that result is relevant. Using this alternative text as a title helps the user, and it also can help your site. Users are scanning for their query terms or other signs of relevance in the results, and a title that is tailored for the query can increase the chances that they will click through."
In your case they are showing the whole page title but adding the brand onto the end as they are not seeing the "colourpages.com" bit as being the brand.
Now, there is no way to directly control this but I can think of a few things to look at straight away.
1. Google use lots of brand signals and ideally all listings of your business should be consistent but, they are not. In fact, there are lots of mentions of your old brand. So, if we search for the old brand, your postcode and remove listings from our own site we find lots and lots of listings:
"hull colour pages" -www.colourpages.com "HU1 3RE"
"hull colour pages" -www.colourpages.com
I would claim and tidy these for starters.
2. I would make a small change to your page title as well and change the brand to "Colour Pages" and use a different seperator to show this is not just a "collection of keywords". Something like:
Plumbers in Hull - Reviews | Colour Pages
Here we have a clearly branded page title that is easier to understand and it includes part of the "Hull Colour Pages" so they may be happier with it. We also clearly differentiate between the keywords and branding with a different separator.
3. External Links
Other folks have mentioned external links so certainly run your backlink profile through OSE and see if you can locate sites linking back and get that updated.
To sum up here Google is not seeing your "colourpages.com" as being the brand so first up make the change to the URL to use "Colour Pages" and separate this from the main part of the page title with the horizontal separator and then do an audit of all old brand mentions and get them claimed and updated so all brand signals are consistent.
To put this into perspective, even your Facebook page uses the old brand so you just need to identify all of these old references and start cleaning them up:
https://www.facebook.com/pages/Hull-Colour-Pages/104140679621054No promises here as Google is a fickle mistress at best but these tips would certainly be where I would start with the title changes done first as that is a quick tweak and then work on the brand mentions and get them all updated so you are consistent on and off site.
Hope that helps!

There is a wikipedia article using the old name: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hull_Colour_Pages
I bet that editing that would go a long way to fixing your problem...

Thank you LindaLV - pleased to hear someone else has had this happen to them.
I will check all external links and see what the descriptions are - see if this helps change what appears on Google.
Thanks for your help

Hi Tuzzell
It's happening to a lot of our URL's but this is the one that i copied the code from http://www.colourpages.com/s/plumbers The terms colourpages.com or Hull are ok because we are a local telephone directory site. It's just the term 'Hull Colour Pages' written exactly like this that we was wanting to change as that was our old name until we changed to colourpages.com.
I just can't seem to find it in the code yet it appears the Google results.
Thanks for your quick response on this one

This has happened to me as well, having an old name show up in the search results. Google does not always use what you put in the title tag for the page title if it thinks that something else is more relevant.
In my case, there were still a good number of external links to the site with the old name being the anchor text, which is where Google got it, I assume. I see on your site that variations on "Colour Pages" are used in a number of your links; maybe that's where Google is picking it up.

Which particular URL are you looking at?
I have just crawled the site and the Meta titles being reported are the same i see in the HTMl (that i looked at, the crawl is 6.5k pages allready and only half way through). When i searched for your URL in Google got the home page back as you would expect and see Hull mentioned in the title, but it was in you meta title too.

Google is showing erroneous results on SERPs page
Hello, All, In April, two months ago, we caught a hack on a client's website. It created about 40 pages in what looked to be a black hat link tactic. We removed the pages, resubmitted the sitemap.xml (it reprocessed) and ran it through screaming frog to confirm all the pages were gone, but the forty pages still show up in the search results for a site search. We have both the www. and non www. version of sites claimed and set a preference. Nothing is awry with the robots.text. We're not really sure what to do to resolve it. We asked Google to recrawl (fetch) the site. I'm not sure what's going on with it. The website's name is fortisitsolutions.com The site search bringing up the pages from the hack is below. site:www.fortisitsolutions.com Any ideas?

Do you say Browser Title or Page Title?
I have seen much more use of "Page Title" of late....in fact hardly any of "Browser Title" except by some folks who are using a very old CMS. We need to go with one at my workplace to avoid confusion. My vote is Page Title. Thoughts? Thanks, Tim

Noindex pages being indexed
Hi all Wondering if anyone could offer a pointer on a problem i am having please. I am developing an affiliate store and to prevent problems with duplicate content I have added name="robots" content="NOINDEX,FOLLOW" /> to all the product pages to avoid google penalties. However, Google appears to be indexing product pages. When I do a site: search I see a few hundred product pages in the engine. This is odd as the site has always had noindex on these pages. Even viewing the cache of the indexed page shows the noindex meta tag to be in place. I'm at a loss as to why these pages are being indexed and could do with removing them asap to stop any penalties on the site. Many thanks for any help.

Page Analysis - Helping Product Pages Outrank Search Results Pages
Hi! We have a lot of our search results pages that have been indexed and outrank our product pages and in some instance the actual product pages barely show up at all. Here is an example query that includes our brand name: http://goo.gl/cgB6W So, we have loads of actual product pages, video pages, etc that should be showing up here, but are not and this is just one example. Unfortunately, there are a LOT of these Search Results pages out there and utlimately we would love to de-index them altogether, but it's going to have to be carefully done. So, was wondering if anyone would want to check out one of our product pages and give any feedback as to what we could change to possibly improve rank or to make them more search friendly or hopefully to help them rise above these indexed search results pages? Here is an example product page: http://goo.gl/2R4IT Thanks!! Craig

Can soft 404's hurt my rankings?
This post mainly pertains to soft 404's but I recently dropped a few ranks in my main keyword which I have maintained prior to this my better rank for well over 2 years. I participate in NO BLACKHAT and obtain links naturally. I want to describe a few issues that happened prior to my ranking dropping and see what you guys think. I started to receive about a week prior to my ranks dropping DNS issues with GWT. It was weird because when I would use Goole Fetch on those pages they would return just fine so I was not sure what was happening there. I use Google page speed server which did in fact decrease my load time (YEAH!!) so that was cool. About 1 week prior to my rankings dropping I enabled godaddy's Website Accelerator as well thinking that could help even more. Because of this I thought maybe this had something to do with my DNS issues with Google so I decided to turn off my website accelerator with Godaddy and just leave my Google pagespeed service on. I figure I don't need 2 of them anyways IMO. Also at the same time I started to receive a ton (31,000+) html errors with duplicate metadescriptions and titles. I discovered I had an error with my code which was displaying 2 different sets of descriptions and titles for each of these pages. I since then have fixed the issue and waiting for Google to index those pages. Here is were I think I might have been hurting from the drop in rankings. Some months ago (maybe 2) I decided to redirect my 404's to my homepage. Yes I know this is not good now and I have created a proper 404 page which returns the 404 code. I recently started getting a ton of Soft 404 errors in GWT which is what brought my attention to this issue. My question is, could my action of redirecting my users to my homepage as a 404 which obviously was returning a 200 on a page that did not exist be possibly the culprit to my ranks dropping?

Are hyphens not a good thing in page titles?
I am pretty sure hyphens are looked at as spaces no matter what programming language you are using for text purposes. The On-page Report Card is not counting them as spaces in the page title, therefore, we're not getting the grade for having the keyword in the page title because it's divided by hyphens. Is this a fix that needs to be implemented into the SEOmoz app or should I not have hyphens in the title or does it really not matter? Up for discussion! Thanks!

Page titles and descriptions
A website has several wigets to show Each wiget with its own page The wigets mostly just vary in size How would you suggest titles be done? Example: Wiget 1ft Wiget 2ft Wiget 3 ft an so on........ Would this trigger a duplicate content issue given “Wiget” leads in the page title?

How do you see a list of URLs with duplicate page titles?
When looking at the Duplicate Page Title report, the Other URLs column has various numbers that presumably indicate the number of pages that share the same title. When I click on one of these numbers, say a URL that shows 4 in that column, the next page reports "No sample duplicate URLs to report". Why isn't it showing me the other 3 URLs with the same page title?
