One brand 5 services. How to optimize?
-
We have a client that provides 5 different services all under one brand and one site. The challenge is getting good web popularity to each major brand. It looks like this:
Brand ( No real Internet traffic to Brand keywords)
Service A
Service B
Service C
Service D
Service E
All the services are displayed on the home page. The SEOmoz scores are now (in general) as high or higher than the competition in the service keywords, but, of course, we are only ranking on the top for one of the services. It's a local business.
We are just finishing a re-design of the site so that each service has an internal "micro site" within the domain. Each of the services is linked from the home page to its micro sites Anchor page. The anchor page is linked to 2 to 4 other pages all directly related to that services information.
SO my question is, should we continue to work on building the home page popularity, or focus a mix between the Home page (Brand) and the Micro sites Anchor pages. or just go
for popularity of the Internal Anchor pages for the services?
Hope this makes sense. And thanks in advance for your thoughts.

Egol is correct. It is really hard to address your question without a great deal of specifics.
The only general recommendation I can offer is to be sure to cover all the major factors for each page before trying to drill down on your home page.
Let's go back to the MOZ Chevrolet example. For your body shop, I would ensure you are listed in any local directories as Moz Chevrolet Body Shop. I would also work with insurance companies, towing companies, police agencies and anyone else I can think of who is a possible source of customer information and can offer a good link.
You don't want to get caught up tweaking minor details on the main page when you have big opportunities on the other pages.
-
For this question, generalized advice is meaningless. Too many factors are involved, such as the rankings of your individual pages and the keywords that your homepage competes for.
-
I guess I could ask this question in a different way.
If we continue to spend 100% of our efforts on the home page popularity ( meaning linking, and all other related SEO type tactics) will we see greater returns on all 5 , (assume all 5 have equal value) than if we spend 100% of our time on the service anchor pages, regardless of the order.
-
Would be hard to work on them all at once. Promoted one at a time
-
I will create an example to try to make this easier.
You are the proud owner of MOZ Chevrolet. Your dealership offers:
New Car Sales
Used Car Sales
Auto Repair
Auto Body Shop
Auto Parts
Each of those five separate departments (what you referred to as services) can have their own sections within your site. As you suggested each of these can be micro sites.
The main MOZ Chevrolet page can focus on broader key words or phrases such as "Chevrolet" or "Chicago Chevrolet". Meanwhile your Auto Repair service can focus on "Chevy repairs" and other key words.
If you are the auto repair manager, you can offer your departments page as the home page for your customers. You can run promotions, track statistics and in many respects treat your pages as if they were their own site.
The key factor is how strong are these services? In this example, many dealerships are quite casual about their business. Meanwhile, your body shop manager can be aggressive, seek business, provide higher standards, etc.
In summary, if your services are strong, then they can absolutely support their own pages. If they are weak, and you don't foresee a change, you may opt to focus on the main brand.

Great questions, and yes. We have each service prioritized by both profitability and marketability
Like all of us of course, they want them all! .
-
Have you spoken with the client about which services they most want promoted? Where do they have capacity, where do they have profitability, what parts of the business do they enjoy?

Should I optimize the login page? Will it affect the website SEO ranking?
I'm trying to resolve the site crawl issues that we have on our website. One of the links that has different issue types together is our login page. Currently we have two login pages that have the same content but different sub domains. **However I'm wondering if optimizing SEO on our login pages affects our website SEO ranking and if it's something better to do or not. ** To point out the details of the issues, the issue types that the logins pages have are "duplicate title", "duplicate content", "missing H1", "missing description", "thin content", "missing canonical tag" I'd appreciate your help, thank you!

Lost homepage rankings for one day
We had a strange thing happen to our website. We have a website that ranks for top keywords for some years. Last week we lost alle of our rankings for one day. The strange thing was, that the rankings were only lost on the homepage, the homepage didnt rank anymore. Even when i googled for 'homepage.com' google showed 'homepage.com/page' and not the homepage. After some reading i checked for the following: no-index sources in the source code - but no results checked for http respons code - 200 ok status checked for downtime in pingdom - no downtime With no rankings on the homepage i was losing 90% of the traffic, i went to GWT and did a fetch as google request, the website looked okay. After that i request a new indexation request. After this the website was back in google with all the old rankings. But what has happend, is still a question for me. Can this be an hack or a wordpress problem or is this realtime penguin with a hit. I also read things about Google flux, but it didnt happen before and it was just the homepage, with no index at all. What happend?

One domain or two for one company with two lines of business?
Let's say you are building a new company that is involved in two lines of business. Let's for example say one line of business is handling logistics for large conventions where the customer(s) are large corporation and the other line is for wedding planning. Let's say that for certain reasons the owner wants to operate under one brand name, say "PROEVENT" So they will market themselves as PROEVENT Convention Logistics and PROEVENT Wedding Planners. From an SEO perspective, if you have one side of the business doing B-to-B corporate business and the other doing B-to-C do you create two different websites on different domains (proeventconventions.com and proeventweddings.com) with unique design and content, or, do you just use provent.com in order to build better domain authority and on your marketing you use conventions.provent.com that takes you to the convention section of the website and weddings.provent.com takes you to the weddings section?

Hreflang many to one relationship (And canonical)
I have a question about the use of hreflang. In country one i have for instance web.one/BlueWidget web.one/YellowWidgetIn country (and language) two I have web.two/Widget In other words, the distinction between yellow and blue isn't there in country two. My best try would beweb.one/BlueWidget two" href="<a>http://</a>web.two/Widget" />web.one/YellowWidget <link rel="<a>alternate" hreflang="two" href="<a>http://</a>web.two/Widget" /></link rel="<a> <link rel="<a>canonical" href="web.one/BlueWidget"/></link rel="<a>web.two/Widget <link rel="<a>alternate" hreflang="one" href="web.one/BlueWidget" /> </link rel="<a> <link rel="<a>canonical" href="web.two/Widget "/></link rel="<a>So pointing both blue and yellow to the Widget in country two, and pointing widget in country two to Blue widget in country one, as BlueWidget is what I would prefer to promote if I had to choose. What do people think? Is this the way to go? If so, why? If not, why?And is it actually worth bothering with? Will country two get a boost because I get links to country one? Regards

Optimal URLs for SEO and UX
We are considering restructuring the URL scheme on one of the websites we maintain. We have a few options. Currently news article URLs are as follows:

http://domain.com/news/1234/article-title-name/ Download section URLs are as follows:
http://domain.com/downloads/files/1234/file-title-of-download-here/ Forum URLS:
http://forum.domain.com/forum/topic/1234/title-of-forum-topic-here/ We feel that these are a bit too long for both SEO and user experience. We want to remove as many directories from the URLs as possible. From experience, what do you recommend changing for the example URLs above? We have some ideas below...and we need to keep the ID in the URLs...however I know this is a little frustrating. Some ideas we have for news articles:

SERP Drop overnight for one of our domains - could it be the title changes?
Hi Scratching our heads here over SERP drop for some of our product pages, Although they are all uniquely titled with the product name, we have recently added 4 words at the end of our title, like a slogan which are repeated on every one of our product pages. However, we've also seen a drop, but not as far, on related category pages, these have unique titles. When we talk about "unique title" being important for SEO, does that mean 0 reptition between page titles? I see many companies use their site name in the title (even here see | SEOMOZ Q&A - would four words at the end of a title do this? Or am i barking up the wrong tree entirely? Ive seen so much movement over the past few weeks its hard to correlate anything we do with the result, so even after advise I think i'll wait a week
