Ranking for our member's company names without giving them all away!
-
Hi,
We have a directory of 25,000 odd companies who use our site.
We have a strong PR site and want to rank a page for each company name. Some initial testing on one or two company names brings us to #2 after the company's own web site in the format: "Company Name Reviews and Feedback" - so it works well.
We want to do this for all 25,000 of our members, however we do not wish to make it easy for our competitors to scrape through our member database!!
e.g. using: www.ourdomain.com/randomstring/company-name-(profile).php
unfortunately with the above performing a search on google for site:domain.com/()/()(profile).php
would bring up all records.
Are there any tried and tested ways of achieving what we're after here?
Many Thanks.

Bottom line, you cannot make data available online without offering a means for a user to grab that data.
You said you "don't wish to make it easy" so I will share some ideas:
-
EGOL's suggestion is good and not that hard to implement. I am not sure if your site requires registration but you can set it up so guests can view a maximum of ?20 member pages or whatever amount you deem to be a reasonable number.
-
There are more complicated methods by which you can establish a script that will block any IP or user who pulls too many pages too quickly.
-
The real challenge is your sitemap. If all that is required is the company's name, your sitemap is all someone needs. In this case there is simply nothing I can think of you can do.
-
If the sitemap isn't a challenge, another idea is to present the data in a method that is not easy to read. You can leave the description information in HTML but present the company name in Flash, for example.
Bottom line, if you want to rank well, the site has to be easy to crawl. If the crawl data offers enough information for others to steal, there is simply no reasonable method that can be used to prevent automated tools from grabbing it.

If you have links into all of these 25000 pages then people and robots will be able to find them.
If you want to keep robot scrapers out then you can use a white list of robots that allows the robots of search engines and other allowed automated visitors in but instructs others to keep out. No guarantees that they will not find a way in with this but it might help. Human scraping will still get through.
You could probably also devise a way to throttle the number of pageviews per visitor or per IP but that would take some creative programming.

Google Indexed Site A's Content On Site B, Site C etc
Hi All, I have an issue where the content (pages and images) of Site A (www.ericreynolds.photography) are showing up in Google under different domains Site B (www.fastphonerepair.com), Site C (www.quarryhillvet.com), Site D (www.spacasey.com). I believe this happened because I installed an SSL cert on Site A but didn't have the default SSL domain set on the server. You were able to access Site B and any page from Site A and it would pull up properly. I have since fixed that SSL issue and am now doing a 301 redirect from Sites B, C and D to Site A for anything https since Sites B, C, D are not using an SSL cert. My question is, how can I trigger google to re-index all of the sites to remove the wrong listings in the index. I have a screen shot attached so you can see the issue clearer. I have resubmitted my site map but I'm not seeing much of a change in the index for my site. Any help on what I could do would be great. Thanks

Re: Inbound Links. Whether it's HTTP or HTTPS, does it still go towards the same inbound link count?
Re: Inbound Links. If another website links to my website, does it make a difference to my inbound link count if they use http or https? Basically, my site http://mysite.com redirects to https://mysite.com, so if another website uses the link http://mysite.com, will https://mysite.com still benefit from the inbound links count? I'm unsure if I should reach out to all my inbound links to tell them to use my https URL instead...which would be rather time consuming so just checking http and https counts all the same. Thanks.

Weird rankings... I'm lost & confused...
Hey guys, I've started working with this client a while back. Everything is working perfectly, we create great content, earn links and rank on a lot of interesting terms. Except for one term... It's keyword difficulty isn't even that high: 38%. (We rank on some keywords which have 60%). They got everything right: interesting and engaging content, a diversified backlink profile (with many organic good links), good on-page SEO but nothing can move them up. Some websites with a lower DA & MozRank are outranking them although they don't do anything regarding their SEO except buying scrappy links. The only thing I can see is that they transitioned to HTTPs and that plenty of their links directed to the HTTP domain. The 301 was done during the transition so I don't think we lost too much of link juice... Please note that during the Keyword Difficulty full-report, I noticed that all their metrics are similar to the first few results in SERPs and largely outpace the others... Any idea on what might be happening? Thanks for your help :)!

List of SEO "to do's" to increase organic rankings
We are looking for a complete list of all white hat SEO "to do's" that an SEO firm should do in order to help increase Google/Bing/Yahoo organic rankings. We would like to use this list to be sure that the SEO company/individual we choose uses all these white hat items as part of an overall SEO strategy to increase organic rankings. Can anyone please point me in the right direction as to where we can obtain this complete list? If this is not the best approach, please let me know what is, as I am not an SEO person. Thank you kindly in advance

Using the same content on different TLD's
HI Everyone, We have clients for whom we are going to work with in different countries but sometimes with the same language. For example we might have a client in a competitive niche working in Germany, Austria and Switzerland (Swiss German) ie we're going to potentially rewrite our website three times in German, We're thinking of using Google's href lang tags and use pretty much the same content - is this a safe option, has anyone actually tries this successfully or otherwise? All answers appreciated. Cheers, Mel.

At the end of the url showing these: **www.domain.com/cateogry/city/district#adult#outdoor#colective ** ? Well really i don't know what to do with the filters. Check if you could help me with that please.
