Redirecting https pages
-
If I add 301 redirects from the https versions of the root domain to the http:www.website.com (canonical version), will this prevent users from being able to access the https version? I believe the https version is only accessed once users log into the site.
Thank you!

To directly answer your question, Erin, a 301 redirect will indeed prevent users from accessing the https versions of your pages and is not the recommended approach.
Is there a reason you want to prevent users/search engines from accessing the https versions of your pages?
Simply ensuring that all links within the site navigation point to http versions, and setting a rel=canonical on all https versions back to the http versions, should do the trick.
Best,

What you want to do is setup the redirect for all pages "except" those pages that you want to require a person to use the https.
As an example on a site I work on, we have two areas /cart/ and /account/ that represent when someone is checking out or when they are logged into their account and want to update payment options, respectively. You would exclude these folders from the https to http 301 redirect so that users could then use that part of the site in secure mode. The rest of the site you want to have the https 301 to http. The reason you go through all this is that a http and https versions of the site, if spidered, would be considered duplicate content and you want to prevent that.
The other part of this would be that you do not want the search engines (usually) to spider the shopping cart and user login sections of a site. Nofollow noindex all links that lead to those pages and also put those folders in robots.txt - that will keep the bots out of there.
One other thing. Make sure that your templates and content within the https sections of the site link out to the non https urls. The 301 will help with this, but why link to the wrong URL anyway?
All of that said. If your site is one that you deal with highly sensitive information (medical, financial come to mind) then you may simply want to have the site run as https. You would need to bulk up your server resources to handle this as https can slow things down a little bit, but it can be done.

It is going to be a little bit more difficult than that. Unless you have a wildcard certificate your ssl certificate is not good for sub domains. www.site.com is considered a sub domain of site.com. That being said, I would use url rewriting to handle the problem. Here is a small example of what you could use.
Rewrite Rules for site.com
RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /Redirect from example.com to www.site.com
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^site.com [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.%{HTTP_HOST}/$1 [R=301,L]Turn SSL on for payments
RewriteCond %{HTTPS} off
RewriteCond %{SCRIPT_FILENAME} /payments.php [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ https://%{HTTP_HOST}/$1 [R=301,L]Turn SSL off everything but payments
RewriteCond %{HTTPS} on
RewriteCond %{SCRIPT_FILENAME} !/payments.php [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://%{HTTP_HOST}/$1 [R=301,L]You will have to enter the other pages that you want to be ssl too, this should get you started though.

Duplicate Page Titles
It seems as though we are being flagged for duplicate page titles when really they are slightly different. Is it better to remove the "dart board" or "dart board backboard" from all the product titles? We were doing this for optimal SEO - to rank for the search of "dart board" - but is it really hurting us? for example, our product titles are: Obama dart board backboard, Texas dart board backboard, Oklahoma dart board backboard, etc. Yet they are being flagged as duplicate titles.

Page Layout Updates and Mobile Pages with Ads
I have been trying to do some research on the Page Layout Algorithm and Top Heavy Ads and much of what I read does not mention about mobile pages as apposed to desktop. I am curious if the Page Layout updates can be effected by mobile pages as well and if there is any good articles on this subject. Also is this Algorithm been incorporated into its regular algorithm or do we still have to wait for refreshes to see the impact? Cesar

Page rank question
Hi all, pretty standard SEO question that I'm sure you are all getting asked day in, day out... the following page: http://www.3wisemonkeys.co.uk/dvd/portable-dvd-player-car/ It's targetting keywords "portable dvd", "portable DVD player", "portable DVD players" & "portable dvd player for car". The page gets a grade A via Moz analytics On-page grader for the keywords. We have incoming links and I believe the page is structured correctly with all meta tags, H1 etc and tried not too overload the tags with keywords. We have the keywords in the URL etc. We are still stuck on page 2 for all phrases. Any thoughts or suggestions as to what we are doing wrong please? Any help would be great.

If I put 'keyword/url' combination to 'stop run weekly', will it dissapear from the summary page in the on-page grader?
The summary page of the on-page grader chooses the keyword and url combination itself. Now if I choose another combination, I would like the former to dissapear from the summary page. The only option is 'stop running weekly'. But will it disappear from the list also?

Pages vs Posts
What are your thoughts on pages vs posts? I am setting up a new blog for a client but not sure how to structure the content. I may just do posts or a whole bunch of page listed down the sidebar. It seems like my pages always rank better than my posts. Has anyone else noticed this? Could it be because of the dates tied posts?

Is there a SEO penalty for multi links on same page going to same destination page?
Hi, Just a quick note. I hope you are able to assist. To cut a long story short, on the page below http://www.bookbluemountains.com.au/ -> Features Specials & Packages (middle column) we have 3 links per special going to the same page.
On-Page Optimization | | daveupton
1. Header is linked
2. Click on image link - currently with a no follow
3. 'More info' under the description paragraph is linked too - currently with a no follow Two arguments are as follows:
1. The reason we do not follow all 3 links is to reduce too many links which may appear spammy to Google. 2. Counter argument:
The point above has some validity, However, using no follow is basically telling the search engines that the webmaster “does not trust or doesn’t take responsibility” for what is behind the link, something you don’t want to do within your own website. There is no penalty as such for having too many links, the search engines will generally not worry after a certain number.. nothing that would concern this business though. I would suggest changing the no follow links a.s.a.p. Could you please advise thoughts. Many thanks Dave Upton [long signature removed by staff]0
