Branding Association for SEO, and Google's understanding of a "brand Name"
-
Hey guys. so I currently run my own business here in Queens NY, for Web Design and online marketing, specifically SEO, SMM, SEM, and some inbound marketing that ties to SMM and SEO. When starting I was in a different business, and had kept my old business name.
I plan on re-branding myself January 1st with a brand new name, the name i'm seriously considering is "Media Marketing USA". I was able to purchase MediaMarketingUSA.com. I feel this name is good and bad at the same time, and here are some of the reasons.
The pro: Easy to remember, sounds big, and describes my business well.
The con: Sounds generic, and I worry it will be hard to brand.
I used the mentioning tool provided by Moz and see that nearly everyday 500-1,000 people are naturally mentioning Media Marketing USA, one of my biggest questions is will this give me a competitive advantage in SEO, or will it hurt me in SEO as Google may not see this or understand its a brand name? Do you personally think this is a good name to re-brand myself and use as my main website?
The Website itself will be used as a corporate website, a method of inbound and outbound marketing through content creation, Social Media, and of course SEO, targeting specific locations, and specialty services and industries in the NYC area.
Please share your thoughts with me, THANKS!!!

Hello Tony,
I agree with the below opinion that a unique name (or different variations of your current name) would be best for branding purposes. However, I know that at this stage it may not be a viable option. While having your brand name mentioned frequently can be a positive aspect, that is only the case if it is recognized as your brand. It would be possible to market your brand while leveraging its popularity through brand association and search engine optimization, however it will be difficult and will require much effort.

Hi Tony,
From the way it looks, your domain name looks like an EMD, and it may not be easy for Google to recognise that it is your brand name. Having exact keywords can help in your SEO, but from a marketing perspective, it doesn't sound like a good brand name.
You should consider giving yourself a unique name instead. It doesn't have to be completely without keywords, but you can consider using portmanteaus, or combining a keyword with an existing word. Moz (used to be SEOmoz) or ReferralCandy (we provide a referral marketing platform for ecommerce retailers) are good examples of how keywords can be used harmoniously as brand names.

Hi Tony,
I see, sorry Tony I thought your concerns may have been around the use of the domain name you purchased and Google's interpretation of it as a legitimate brand site for users searching on that branded query.
I have seen sites where I've tested out generic queries to see if the domain has given them competitive advantage and well many are positioned in the top first page ranks but not all gain that coveted 1st place for that query. Which are taken by more established domains, with higher domain and page authority etc.
Sorry I can't be much more help to you than that Tony.
Best regards,
David

Hi david, I am actualy not trying to do an EMD. I am not targeting Media Marketing USA as a potential high level keyphraise. I would doubt many people would even search it. I will be targeting Web Design Location, SEO Location etc.
But what this question is about is not EMD's or there affect, but rather is this name possible to use as a brand?
Can I develop a brand from a generic name like this one?
would Google understand this is a brand, and possibly give me a competitive advantage because it happens to be mentioned 500+ times a day? (found out using the mentioning tool)

Hi Tony,
Looks like your putting some serious consideration into employing an EMD domain 'Exact Match Domain'. For me most of the last year looking at the MOZ postings and discussions around this practice they seem to want people to be wary of this. See this post for instance by Dr.Pete last September http://moz.com/blog/are-exact-match-domains-in-decline.
Personally, I would prefer the long haul road, build up my valued content on my sites and other properties and gradually through generic searches see people revisit but this time via branded searches. On if my competitors employed an EMD, this year he has done considerably down the ranks.
At the same time I gather you are wanting to rack up some quick wins and get people to your site ASAP. I tend to employ an initial 3-6 month PPC strategy on terms to see what works and then optimised content around successful terms with good conversion rates.
However granted if your legal business is going to be this name, then it might therefore be fine. These are just my thoughts but I hope that helps a little.
David

This issue is about website properties' information showing on Google's search index with brand keywords. We have 8 different domains that operated separately in 8 countries. All are responsible for their individual domain. When I Google it with our brand name 'Flight Centre' in Google.ca, Google's search index shows company website link with flightcentre.com and detects all information, social profile etc.. from Flight centre Australia. Please see the screenshot. How to change this information that Google shows or detects website link and all other properties from flightcentre.ca? Anybody about with a quick answer would be awesome? Site Architecture for Sub-Brands
I am working on launching a few industry specific sub-brands for our marketing agency and am trying to figure out the best way to deliver a tailored user experience using subfolders instead of subdomains, if this is indeed the best option... Since I am trying to provide separate experiences, I looking at housing microsites in sub-folders - say /technology or /medical. Each with its own navigation, home page, and industry specific content/blog/portfolio. A couple things I am considering: Will my microsite "home pages" and site pages rank as well in a sub-folder versus if they were actually the primary pages on their own sub-domain? Will separate Wordpress and theme installs and separate primary navigations have any affect on SEO if they are in sub-folders of the same site? Thanks in advance for any input. I really appreciate it!

Google Changing the Title Tag to Your Brand
A while back google started changing our title tags to have our name in it, which was great and reasonable for the most part. We recently ran into a problem with it as we have some properties on our site that fall under a dba. Here is the example. Title tag: Kolea- Waikoloa Vacation Rentals
Branding | | RobDalton
Kolea is a vacation rental community is a resort called Waikoloa. Waikoloa Vacation Rentals is our company name and www.waikoloavacationrentals.com is our company site. Here is the problem:
Title tag: Hualalai Resort- Waikoloa Vacation Rentals
Hualalai is a completely different place than Waikoloa and we do business in there as Hualalai Vacation Rentals, but keep our properties on our www.waikoloavacationrentals.com site rather than microsites. How can you let google know that what they are doing is incorrect for specific pages? Thanks,0 -
Google Plus for Businesses - Should I add users to Company's Circles (branded page)?
Hi All, I know (or think I know) that one of the easiest ways to gain followers for my brand on G plus is to add people to our company's circles. Naturally, they often add you back. However, what does it mean to people who watch my brand (my G Plus page), the fact that I'm following thousands of people? Should I do it? How does it reflect on us?

Is there a better way to gain followers (specifically for G Plus)? P.S
We obviously have the badge on site but we hardly gain followers that way. Thanks0 -
Using mlm and 'scammy' websites to identify brand/reputation management opportunities
I think this almost warrants a youmoz post, but I was wondering if anyone has used MLM or 'shady' industry companies to see where they place their reputation/brand links to dominate the first 2-3 pages of google for things like 'company name + scam' 'company name + reviews'. On a side note what is your opinion of a company that goes to great lengths to create a very strong push to control those keywords? Would you recommend your clients dominate the first 2-3 pages with 'honest review about company x' and 'the truth about company x' fakeditorials? Do you guys think people see right through them. Take any MLM..for instance legal shield scam (not my company, but an MLM that I am very wary of) as professionals what do you think of their reputation management build out......what do you think consumers would see when they read this? is there such a thing as going to far to refute false claims and building sponsored reviews? I'm personally against doing sponsored reviews and spamming with them, but maybe I am naive.

Video's Pros and Cons - YouTube vs My website or both?
This isn't really a question per say, but more of a request for advise. We are in the process of creating videos for our travel website. They are more informational and do not promote any products as such. I am aware of the options, and I am leaning towards creating a pro account with Vimeo so that the videos are available only on our website. The reason for this is so that we can at least get credit for our work, as when they are on you tube, anybody can syndicate the video without linking to our website. I am also aware that there are allot of searches happening on YouTube, and it may be worse if we choose not to upload our videos there as we would loose out on a big audience. it would be GREAT if we had the best of both options. And i had an idea i want to get your opinions on. Create the video and upload onto our website with "lower competitive" title / meta / body. Submit the video on YouTube with a "Higher competitive" keyword / title /meta and description. When someone finds our video, they might search YouTube to avoid linking back and wont find it, (although it is there getting traffic from a similar keyword) Branding is the number 1 objective for these videos, so you tube + many other video sites would be the way to go. However, i would also like our own "private" video blog on our site so that if web masters like the video, we can give them the option of embedding it on there site (like SEOMOZ do it on there whiteboard Fridays) Your comments and suggestions will be muchly appreciated. PPC effecting personalisation and thus future personalised SERP's
I've been thinking about personalisation and PPC.. If you have a PPC campaign and a vistor comes to your site and has a look around, if that user doesn't clear there cache etc then that visit via PPC will start to effect their personalisation search results? It would almost be worth maintaining a high level of PPC spend and counting on personalization bias in SERPs in the longer term.. What do you think about this? Are there any safe guards in place to make sure this bias doesn't happen?
