SEO For sub locations for specific services
-
Hey Guys, I am currently creating a website for my business that will be marketing through SEO very heavily. I Live in NYC, and i'd like to rank up for the individual locations such as Queens, Brooklyn, Long Island and eventually if my domain authority and other long hall metrics kick in NYC.
What I find very tiring is targeting these locations all separately, it means I need to create the same site 4 times with completely different and unique content.
Should this setup work for me, and is there a risk that Google will see 4 web design pages, and basically say even though the content is unique your ranking up for web design with a location too many times? from my understanding this is not a problem now, but is this a future risk? It also becomes extremely difficult for site navigation with about us pages, contact us pages, and other pages that either have to be duplicated or all pages shown on sidebar for navigation.
Please share your thoughts with me, THANKS!!!

Hi Tony,
I have most experiencing in consulting with true local businesses. Their business models typically fall into 1 of 3 categories:
-
They have a single physical location (like a restaurant) to which clients come
-
They have multiple physical locations (like a chain) to which clients come
-
They have a central office from which employees go to render services at clients' locations in various cities (like a landscaping company)
In the second case, the norm is to create a set of location landing pages on the website (one for each location) and to link to these from the main site menu. Each page would be optimized with the complete NAP (name, address, phone number) and would contain as much unique information as possible about the respective office.
In the third case, the norm is to create city landing pages for each of the cities in the company's service radius. The content would need to be unique on these, but they need not simply be a repeat of information from page to page. For example, in the case of the landscaper, he could have one set of pages describing his services (softscaping, hardscaping, water feature installation, etc) and these main pages would be optimized for his city of location, as this is the one Google will care about when it comes to his core Local SEO. Then, he can create a second set of pages showcasing his work in each of the various cities in a unique manner. He could include a brief summary of all of his services on these city landing pages, but the bulk of the content would be a showcase of his projects. For example, 'here is an arbor we built in San Jose', 'here is a pond we installed in San Rafael'. His city landing pages can be a text and image-based gallery of his design projects.
Your case is a bit different, Tony, because Google does not view website design firms as truly local and doesn't display them as local results. Everything for you will be organic in nature, but your scenario is most like my case #3 in that you can take similar steps to showcase your design work for clients in various cities. You don't need to offer an enormous explanation of your HTML, PHP, WordPress and Joomla work on each of these landing pages, repeating yourself ad infinitum. You can have a separate set of pages that go into the specifics of these services and create different types of content on the city landing pages, hopefully showcasing the sites you have developed for clients in various cities. If you need to create a CSS-based (read: crawlable) dropdown in your menu to include these pages under headings like 'See our San Jose Web Design Projects', then that would be fine, because you definitely do want these pages to be indexed as highly important.
Do avoid duplicate content - this is very important. Yes, it's going to take effort, but here is a chance for your creativity and love of your work to really shine through. Get energized! This is really important work and developing pages that wow your potential clients and make you proud of your company should be a fun and exciting challenge for your firm.

Well of course it would all be on one website with different landing pages, but the idea is for web design it has to be beneficial to the consumer to understand what we offer, and repeating that 4 times in different ways is such a hassle. unfortunately targeting a large city like NYC for web design, and SEO is way to competitive, we really need to target Queens, Brooklyn, and Long island as a short term goal, and NYC as a long term goal.
Yes we would only show all locations on homepage, each landing page wont show other locations, or anything confusing, the problem i'm seeing is if someone enters a landing page for lets say Queens web design, and there are all the queens related pages such as SEO, online marketing. and they go to any of these, and then maybe deciding to click on about us to learn about us, how would the navigation work there? how would the about us page know where they came from? its becomes difficult with universal pages.

Hello,
I don't think you need to create the same site 4 times. A better approach could be to make one site and then make separate landing pages that have slightly different targets. So for example you could target 'queens web design' on one page and then on a second one go after a variation of the keyword like 'Long Island Web Development'. You also don't need to link these pages to the main navigation, but make sure they are contained as pages on the site. This way the pages will still rank but won't be as confusing to potential customers browsing the site, since they are entering through the targeted landing page and then continuing to browse the rest of the site, they wont directly see different location pages on the site. It would probably be beneficial to see which location has the most/best search volume as well and then target that location a bit heavier with the rest of the website copy.

SEO: High intent organic revenue down in Europe
Our team is stumped and we are hoping some of you might have some insight! We are seeing a drop in Europe organic revenue and we can't seem to figure out what the core cause of the problem is. What's interesting, the high intent traffic is increasing across the business, as is organic-attributed revenue. And in Europe specifically, other channels appear to be doing just fine. This seems to be a Europe high-intent SEO problem. What we have established: Revenue was at a peak in Q4 2017 and Q1 2018 Revenue dips in mid-late Q2 2018 and again in Q4 2018 where it has stayed low since Organic traffic has gone up, conversion rate has gone down, purchases have gone down Paid search traffic has gone up, conversion rate has gone down slightly, submissions have gone up Currency changes are minimal We cannot find any site load issues What we know happened during this time frame (January 2018 onward): Updates to the website (homepage layout, some text changes) end of April 2018 GDPR end of May 2018 Google Analytics stops being able to track Firefox Europe is a key market for us and we cant figure out what might be causing this to happen - again, only in Europe - beyond GDPR and the changes we've made on our site is there anything else major that we're missing that could be causing this? Or does anyone have any insights as to where we should look? Thank you in advance!

Hotel SEO, 3-pack & Search Console: How to get the right data and how to improve CTR?
Hey guys, I've been working with some hotels and I feel like there are some specific issues which need special solutions.
Algorithm Updates | | Maggiathor
Maybe some of you also work for hotels and face similar problems. Question 1: Google "forces" 3-packs impressions to OTAs like booking.com via Hotel Ads. You basically have a big blue "book now" button and a small little website button. This ends up basically leading to CTRs below 1% despite a 1-3 Position. Is there any way to improve the organic CTR? Of course we use hotel ads, but they offer bad analytics AND we basically pay for our SEO-Performance. Question 2: Search console doesn't specify wether or not a impression comes from 3-Pack or the rest of the organic results, which basically leads to a average position which says nothing. It's hard to evaluate the performance of meta-titles and texts, because the ctr is also mixed. What would be a better way to get this data or do you think google will change this in some time (new search console doesn't offer this). Question 3: Hotel Rankings are dominated by OTAs, Meta-Searchers and BIg Chains. Has anyone experience in SEO for smaller, family owned Hotels? Any tricks how to get a steady traffic source outside of brand results? Hope there are some travel experts in here 🙂0 -
Do Explainer Videos Help SEO?
My company makes explainer videos. I often come across a lot of (seemingly) inflated & unprovable stats, pertaining to explainer videos, from other companies. This article claims that "Having an explainer video on your web page makes it 53% more likely to show up on the first page of Google search results" Is there any real data to back up such a claim? Do explainer videos really help SEO? How?

SEO Audit after Penguin 2.1 what are you guys seeing? this is my thougts
We have looked at around 2000 sites since Penguin 2.1 launched a few weeks back. These include our customers and their own competitors site. We are going through all the data which is obviously going to take some time. Hopefully we will publish a report on our findings as we are happy to share. What I currently see in my early analysis is Roughly 70% of sites tested have 0% exact match Anchor Text for their money keywords. The other 30% have less than 5% exact match Anchor Text. The quality of the links is often still poor to the sites ranking on page 1. The content surrounding the links is only about 10-15% of the time related to the money keywords. The loading time of the sites ranking seems to not matter, we encountered a lot of slow sites. Design and usability of the site was not important. We are not seeing much impact via Social media, a lot of these sites are small business Less than 10% of sites on page 1 had a Google+ account More than 40% of page 1 sites had Facebook profiles. More than 80% of the sites ranking on page 1 had less than 100 links to the landing page that ranked What are your opinions of helping to recover if hit by the above??? Q) If you have too high an anchor text percentage and have been hit or may get hit in the future would you. a) create some more high quality links with more varied anchor text, ie Click here, brand name etc b) not create any more links just remove the links you have to dilute the anchor text c) change the anchor text on links you are able to These figures are a work in progress so data will change just wanting to share our early findings and try to get a good conversation going. What are you guys seeing?

Is My SEO Strategy Doomed?
Hi Mozzers, Second time poster here and still a major rookie with SEO. I run the website http://OrangeOctop.us/, it provides winning tips for video games such as FIFA, NBA 2K, NHL. All of the tips are written by experts and professional gamers. The site has been trying to rank for the term "NHL 14 Tips". To give you some more background info, the actual game, NHL 14, does not come out for another two weeks. I was just being proactive with trying to rank for a term that will be popular in the future. My Wordpress category page, http://orangeoctop.us/nhl14-tips/, ranked as high as #5 for "NHL 14 Tips", but it seems that as it gets closer to the game's release date, I get pushed further down the google rankings. In the most recent Moz crawl, my site just dropped 11 spots. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Was Panda applied at sub-domain or root-domain level?
Does anyone have any case studies or examples of sites where a specific sub-domain was hit by Panda while other sub-domains were fine? What's the general consensus on whether this was applied at the sub-domain or root-domain level? My thinking is that Google already knows broadly whether a "site" is a root-domain (e.g. SEOmoz) or a sub-domain (e.g. tumblr) and that they use this logic when rolling out Panda. I'd love to hear your thoughts and opinions though?
