Having Trouble Ranking .us for branded Keyword
-
Hi Mozers,
First time poster here.
I run the website http://OrangeOctop.us/, it provides winning tips for FIFA, NBA 2K, NHL.
The domain authority is 22 but I am unable to rank for the term OrangeOctopus. I know there are dozens of factors that should be assessed when looking at competition in Google (such as backlinks, domain age/relevance, social). However, I feel like you guys might have some suggestions for being able to rank for OrangeOctopus.
Thank you!
Joey

Below the mail subscription it says "Become a fan of Octop.us" take out the period. I know that's the website but if you want to brand your name you'll need to trust that people can figure out how to get there.
I see what you did here with your domain name and it's clever but you put yourself in a tight spot and it's going to be difficult to brand your site. As you are already noticing..
Try to fit it in more places. Like under something that says "Tips" maybe it can read "Tips from the Orange Octopus" or somewhere can say "Questions? Ask the Orange Octopus."
Make that Octopus the entity like Moz made Roger Bot their's.
Interesting that moz gave you an A for that keyword.. I'm surprised. But even still there should be a few pointers in there if you read through the report.
Maybe somewhere with the social links you can work it in.. or even as alt text for the social image buttons. At the least make the alt and title text read "Follow Orange Octopus on Twitter" etc
If you can get less images and more text.. what I mean by that is instead of text embedded in the images, try to get the text to overlay and weave in your branded keywords there. For a Fifa 14 goalie tips article you could say over the top of the image "Orange Octopus Plays Keeper: Learn How to Defend the Goal."
Just a few ideas. Take what I'm saying here and run with it!

Hi Jesse,
This is awesome, thank you! I really appreciate your thought out response.
Yup, I have an account with Moz Pro and the on-page grader gave the homepage an A for the keyword OrangeOctopus. Your new ideas will hopefully bring the site closer to ranking.
Attached is a mock-up for the new homepage....Do you have any suggestions for where to add the keyword?
Thank you!

on-page optimization tips:
- add title tags to images
- make your logo's file name titled orangeoctopus.jpg instead of "logo.jpg"
- try to incorporate your name into your index page more. Find a place for a stylized H1 tag. Doesn't have to be big and title-like to use the tag... CSS is your friend. Or anything really there isn't one single iteration of the word orange or octopus on your homepage. What makes you think google would think it has anything to do with your page? It's not in your domain or anywhere on that page..
- wait this is a wordpress site. use yoast, not semper fi.
- what's this? http://i.minus.com/i8ATM78PvY6es.png that doesn't tell me anything or contain any kewords... what's with that url? why is that offsite and in a giant weird footer?
- do you have a pro account here at moz? it will give you tons of ideas on how to optimize your page on-site for this keyword. that's a big part of what the moz tools do.
- links will help. stop putting your videos on youtube. embed them onto your site with a tool like wistia.
Hope these quick tips help. Not meaning to come off cross. Just typing out thoughts as I look through your page.

Why are they ranking?
Hi I've been looking at domains which rank well for a particular search term - plastic storage boxes to try and see why they rank. http://www.poundstretcher.co.uk/home-furniture/storage-organisation/plastic-storage ranks particularly well. From what I can see, they have about 6 backlinks, 28 DA, and 11 PA - which isn't that high compared to others ranking on the first page. I can't work out why they rank so highly, they also rank for over 100 other storage terms for this page. Am I looking in the wrong place?

Is this keyword stuffing?
This is one of my competitor's sites. I ran the on-page report card and the word Hyundai is on the page 102 times, and 67 times in the body. Here is the link: http://www.rosenhyundai.com I would love to hear your guys opinion, if this is keyword stuffing and could it get penalized by panda? Thanks for your help.

Continuous drop in Rankings on Google.uk
I have a Website who was ranked top 6 for most competitive keywords on Google.co.uk but suddenly dropped to page 2 after 21st January 2013 and later back to top 10 position and now dropped to pages 2 to 5, for most terms. I initially thought it was the transition rank causing this fluctuations. The strange thing is, i haven't done anything wrong in terms of back linking efforts. My site is content rich and offers real value to users also, the website PR increased from 3 to 4 recently, my site seomoz rank, PA, DA and Moz trust is higher than top ranked websites above mine. Please any suggestions?? Kindly help.....

Why is my competitor's site ranking #1?
I'm about to work for a local business website that offers cleaning services and products. The keyword they want the most is ruled by a very odd site; My client's competitor's site has been around for 7 years. (Less than the average of it's competitors. Less than my client's) Has 1 backlink. Lower PA MR MT & DA than any other in the SERP. It's a 1 page site made with Flash. They do not have FB or Twitter accounts. So I thought maybe they were ranking so well because of their traffic. But neither my client, me or my coworkers have ever heard of this company. And yet, they are ranking #1. And the only thing I notice that might have helped is that the title of their page is the exact keyword and nothing more. Any ideas?

I must be tripping. How is this site ranking for the term "SEO Company"??????
When I go to Google non-custom search results and search the term: seo company The website "greencowseo.com" is ranked 3rd. OpenSiteSearch shows nothing. And get this... the domain was registered 14 days ago by somebody in Egypt. Do I need to quit my SEO Moz membership and hire this guy? 🙂

Identify keywords certain sites target
Hello, I've been asked to identify what keywords a group of blogs/communities might target so that we might gain some insight for our own SEM purposes. It's been several years since I used SEOmoz's tools, so they have changed a lot. I couldn't remember if you had such a tool, but it appears you do not--or at least not that I am finding. I was wondering if anyone could point me in the direction of such a tool where I can input a subdomain, and have a report stating which keywords are the ones the domain rates highly for. To be clear: I'm not looking for a traffic estimation or anything; simply a breakdown of what keywords a specific page or domain support most. P.S. I did a search on here for certain terms like "competitive keyword targets" and so forth, and saw no matching QA. I'm sorry if there is a duplicate! Thanks,

Keyword Research Tool Problem
Hi, I had been in SEO for around 2 to 3 years, I am looking for your suggestion if there is any best keyword research tool. I tried almost most of the keyword research tool (both paid or free) but I found the following problem: -Worktracker: I think it is too difficult to use and understand as a non technical person. I always wonder the data accuracy because when the same keyword appear in Google for few thousand traffic, it only appear in Wordtracker for few dozen or hundred of search. Also I don't think they suggest any long trail keywords in my view. The long trail keyword you can also find in free keyword search tool. -Google Keywords Tool- Good, but it can only show 100 results. I cannot get a better pictures of related or niches keywords. I always find some competitive keywords can rank easily but some non competitive keywords usually very difficult to rank in some case. It will depend on how you interpret the data results. -Keyword Discovery and Wordstream-Although I really want to subscribe, but they are a way too expensive (you have to subscribe for 12 months). I check with their free keywords tool but only shown very limited results. Although there are some other like spyfu.com or keywords spy...... Is there any one can suggest me which is the best tool to start with keyword search for the long trail and niche keywords ? or is there any way or trick to find the best keywords ? Thank you. Tom
