How to separate your - keywords - and | Brand name in the Title Tag
-
I have traditionally used hyphens (-) and vertical bars (|) to separate out keywords/brands in title tags. A client has asked if other characters will work such as tilde (~), apersat (@), forward slash (/) etc. Are there any special characters we should steer clear of?
-
Hi Switch, thanks for your question! Chris is correct in that it is best practice to keep your title brief and readable, with your keyword on the front end and your brand name on the back end. I personally feel that separating the page/article title from the brand name makes the tag easier to read. As Google now truncates title tags based on the total width of the characters (vs. the number of characters), I prefer using the pipe separator for this purpose. Hope that helps!

Switch,
Your title is best if it's short and readable, brand name towards the back, primary keyword to the front. With 70 characters to play with you really don't have much room to be talking about other keywords. If you feel you have to use some sort of separator, the title's probably not as readable as it should be or it's running long. If you're thinking separator, think separate page for the keyword, instead.

I would stick to the hyphens, and vertical bars. Google recognizes those two as separators.
While tildes, apersats, and slashes could hypothetically work as well - there will certainly not be any gained SEO advantage.

Is Bing also ignoring meta Keywords tags?
Hi, I originally asked about pros (or lack of them) when it comes to using meta keywords tags here https://moz.com/community/q/importance-or-lack-of-meta-keywords-tags-and-tags-in-drupal. It was most likely related to Google, I guess. Is that the same if it comes to Bing as few sources are not sure how this SERP consider using meta keywords tags and people only speculating. Anyone has any kind of "confirmed" responses or experience? Thank you in advance.

Rel canonical tag back to the same page the tag is on?
Very simple, Why would a website (and I have seen tons doing this) link the rel canonical tag back to the same page the tag is on? Example: somepage.htm has a canonical tag linking to somepage.htm I thought the idea of this tag was to tell google if 2 pages are similar, this page is the original, and it's this page which should be indexed and the page with the tag on should pass all PR to the original. Maybe im wrong and someone can help me out to understand this.

Title tag formatting
So I thought I had Title tags cracked... Unique to each page Priority phrases at the start Under 70 characters inc spaces No spamming of keyword phrase Brand at the end But do people believe that this structure is bad? <keyword 1="" phrase="">| <keyword 2="" phrase="">|<brand></brand></keyword></keyword> and that Title tags should now be structure more like full sentences? And does using the same keyword phrase on several pages dilute or cannibalize results? Thanks

Page title
So if we have a main category page on our site (mines an ecommerce site), do we go for more than that main keyword phrase for that category of products, or is it better to just keep it by itself, and not utilize the 65-70 characters available?
