1000+ links from domain to subdomain - impacting?
-
Hi there!
I'm wondering if anyone could kindly help me with this question.
I have a domain let's say: thisdomain.com - and I also have a subdomain called widgets.thisdomain.com
thisdomain.com has approx 2000 pages on it. There are site wide links in the top nav, side nav and footer pointing to widgets.thisdomain.com (all with the same anchor text - not branded - it's a money term).
My question is, do you think this would be causing some kind of algorithmic penalty (over optimisation / penguin)?
Or, do you think Google realises these links are pointing to a subdomain and says, "hey, OK we understand these two domains could be related" or given subdomains are seen as essentially standalone websites, the algo is saying "hang on a minute, pal, this looks fishy, why are you linking to this subdomain 1000+ times with sitewide links on the same anchor text"?
Should I nofollow these sitewide links? Do you think that will help?
I would really appreciate any help on this one.
Cheers!

If you do that and those links have supported rankings then there could be a traffic loss.
Yes, traffic/rankings have gone down so I've been investigating possible over optimisation especially on money terms.
If this was client site, I would be tempted to describe Door A, Door B and Door C.
Yes, you are not wrong. I like the analogy!
Really appreciate your help, EGOL.

I believe they've been advised a few years ago about the subdomain being the best approach.
That was probably good advice at the time. But times Google has changed.
however the client won't want that
You guys who have clients must have a lot of patience.
hence my thinking at least by adding the nofollow attribute, I can tell Google's algo I'm not trying to pass any juice across.
If you do that and those links have supported rankings then there could be a traffic loss.
FROM INITIAL QUESTION: do you think this would be causing some kind of algorithmic penalty
From this I think you are saying that the site suffered a rankings loss. If that is the case then taking action might be helpful. If that is not the case, I would be inclined to do nothing....
... well, honestly, I would be redirecting that subdomain to a folder if this was my site.
If this was client site, I would be tempted to describe Door A, Door B and Door C. And tell them that my best judgement says that there is shit behind A and B but safety, possible rankings increase behind Door C. If it was my site or my mother's site I would be using Door C. Then they have been given your best advice and choose the shit if they like it.

Thanks EGOL, I really appreciate your thoughts
Yes, I would love to get the client to move this content into a folder on the main site. I believe they've been advised a few years ago about the subdomain being the best approach. I'm glad you're getting terrific results from the move.
The reason for the links... The product on the subdomain is a separate business entity however it is still closely related to what the main company does. So they want people to be able to find these links easily. I agree, the footer link could be removed entirely, however the client won't want that, hence my thinking at least by adding the nofollow attribute, I can tell Google's algo I'm not trying to pass any juice across.
The situation is, they have three money term sitewide links from the main domain pointing at two separate pages on the subdomain. This means there are 1000+ links pointing at two distinct pages on the subdomain using a money term.

My question is, do you think this would be causing some kind of algorithmic penalty (over optimisation / penguin)?
Personal opinion... Probably not. But, if those three links each have different anchor text with money terms and are hitting different pages on the subdomain then I might be wrong.
Maybe.
Should I nofollow these sitewide links? Do you think that will help?
You could. That would be a good conservative response.
Why do you have all of these links? Does anybody click those footer links? I bet nobody is clicking them.
I know that the answers that I gave above were less than satisfying. I responded to this question to suggest that the content on your subdomain could be moved into a folder on the root domain. I did this on a site and the results have been kickass. Kickass.

General Question: Linking Root Domains 0
Hi, we have several subpages with PA 1. We try to figure out why. The link metrics show 0 Linking root domains, but shouldnt there be at least the own domain like 1 linking root domain or are we getting it already wrong here? The subpages have following link metrics: 0 External followed Links. 8416 subdomain and 8421 Root Domain, Linking Root Domains 0, 299 Subdomain, 302 Root Domain (From Mozbar). The pages seem to be crawled. We are suspecting techincal reasons. What would be the impact of the linking root domain to the PA 1? Thank you in advance

Keyword domain usage
Hi I have a client who wants some advice on the following and I haven't come up with anything decent yet. So wanted to throw it out here. They own a domain like soccershoes.com which also houses their web site. They have now bought ussoccershoes.com because this US based search term is more popular than simply soccer shoes. How can they utilise this new domain effectively to drive traffic to their main web site? Thanks for any input.

Outbound Links
I have a page on upstrap-pro.com that provides weights of cameras and lenses. The user/buyer of my on-slip camera straps needs to know the weight his camera and lens to determine the proper pad size... large to small. We have put together a long list of the most popular customer cameras. The way it was done (by my daughter) was to also provide a via a link to dpreview.com which is an excellent site for camera information including specifications etc. My personal feeling about this is mixed. I can do it by having it open dpreview.com in a new tab but then the user/customer could still get distracted and go down the rabbit hole. On the other hand dpreview is such a good site that if they are new to photography and don't know about it, they should. I don't get a dime from dpreview. If fact I doubt they would ever link back to me because they do not write about camera straps. I hear mixed things about outbound links. In this file there are quite a few outbound links to dpreview to keep it consistent. I could do a nofollow on all of them but I read that this is the easy way out. Google is jump ball and I have no clue what Cutts and his merry men are going to decide is cool or not cool. I'd like some thoughts or options... Thanks... A small part of the file below. More than one web domain
Hi What is best when considering using more than one domain on a website, what the best policy ? it's a question I get asked a lot, usually because prior to any seo efforts the main domain name purchased is not keyword rich or an abbreviated company name etc. what impact do new domains have on SEO compared to older existing domains- is it worth changing a generic company named domain for a keyword rich domain? if having multiple domains pointing to the site is beneficial how best is it to configure? How do i inform Google? How do both domains get index when there is only one physical site? How should i monitor it, Analytic s, SEO moz? Will the domain compete against each other and effect SEO rank? Are they best used for marketing purposes on external sites, adverts driving traffic to the main site. I'm aware there are lots of questions above, any answers/ opinions , links to further info would be greatly appreciated. cheers

How Much Authority Needed for Page with 1000 Internal Links?
Hypothetically speaking, if you wanted your homepage to have 1000 links, how much Page Rank or link authority would you need at a minimum (in order for Google to crawl all the links on the page)? Here is an example: http://www.khanacademy.org/#browse

What is SEO impact of redirecting from domain to https appspot domain ?
Our site is hosted on google and is fully https. But since google's limitation is that all https needs to be on the appspot domain, we are redirecting users from our website to the appspot domain. What is the impact of this on SEO?

Will errors on a subdomain effect the overall health of the root domain?
As stated in the question, we have 2 sub domains that contain over 2000 reported errors from SEOMOZ. The root domain has a clean bill of health, and i was just wondering if these errors on the sub-domains could have a negative effect on the root domain in the eyes of Google. Your comments will be appreciated. Regards Greg
