Vetting Link Opportunties that are Penguin Safe
-
I am looking to go after sites that are, and will never be, affected by Penguin/Panda updates. Is there a tool or a general rule of thumb on how to avoid such sites? Is there a method anyone is currently using to get good natural links post Penguin 2.0?

Find out if the content manager knows about keyword research.
I do content management and have a graph on my wall that has two axes...
The horizontal axis is "Profitable"
The vertical axis is "Linkable"
Content ideas are written on post-it notes and placed at an appropriate location on that chart. The goal is to work on those in the upper right quadrant first... then generate more ideas for that same quadrant.
After all upper right quadrant content is produced then pick the most fun jobs from the upper left and lower right quadrant.
Generate more ideas for all quadrants but lower left.

so, leading with great content is the key. I agree. In my company, I am responsible for SEO execution and we have a content manager who is responsible for content strategy and execution. We also have a handful of guest bloggers and staff bloggers who add a blog post about once a month to our site and then those posts are promoted through FB/Twitter. Therefore, I am out of the loop when it comes to content direction and creation, even though I am the only one who knows the terms people are searching for and who ranks for those terms besides us. Any suggestions on how I should approach any SEO tactics given I dont control content?

I do the same as Christopher, but without FB and Twitter. My visitors do that for me.
In my opinion a lot of people who try this method and do not succeed have content that is less than inspiring. For this method to work well you have to compare your content to the top ranking sites for your keywords and have clearly better, more substantive and superior photos.
I launch new content and only promote it on my own site and to the people who subscribe to my feed. It might rank deep in the SERPs at first... when I check on it a year later it is usually on the first page of Google. So I am not paying a lot of attention to rankings or to links. And, because the content is generous in length it pulls in lots of longtail queries.

I used to spend a lot of time identifying high value sites in our niche and create relationships with the site owners to get back links. In hindsight I think that was time that could have been better spent. Now, I spend my time researching and writing articles that I think my users would find interesting, useful, engaging, compelling. As these articles are published on our site, I post a link to our pages/accounts on Facebook and Twitter to create some buzz, and I may add a few marketing dollars to promote the post as well. If the content of an article was well-researched and well-written, the shares, retweets, and links will come. Some of the links are high value, others not, but they are all natural.
Best,
Christopher

Should I 301 redirect my old site are just add a link to my new site
I used to offer design and web services on a site that is current blank (no content, no links). My questions is should I add a little bit of content, maybe a brief explanation with a link to my new site. Or should I just add 301 redirect. This is purely a question of what is better for SEO and ranking for my new site (not a branding question).

Is article syndication still a safe & effective method of link building?
Hello, We have an SEO agency pushing to implement article syndication as a method of link building. They claim to only target industry-relevant, high authority sources. I am very skeptical of this tactic but they are a fairly reputable agency and claim this is safe and works for their other clients. They sent a broadly written (but not trash) article, as well as a short list of places they would syndicate the article on, such as issuu.com and scribd.com. These are high authority sites and I don't believe I've heard of any algo updates targeting them. Regarding linking, they said they usually put them in article descriptions and company bylines, using branded exact and partial matches; so the anchor text contains exact or partial keywords but also contains our brand name. Lately, I have been under the impression that the only "safe" links that have been manually built, such as these, should be either branded or simply your site's URL. Does anyone still use article syndication as a form of link building with success? Do you see any red flags here? Thanks!

Does this look like a Penguin drop to you?
Hi Folks, This is my first post here. Psyched to be part of this great community. I have a site that's seen a steady drop in Google organic traffic since September of last year. Slow at first, then picking up speed in late January, then in a free-fall in May. Things are finally flattening out, but I'm left with 30% of my former traffic. See graph. I've been thinking that this was caused by Penguin. Back in 2006-2009, I used free directory submission services, and it looked like I was finally getting penalized for it. However, from the research I've done so far, it looks like websites hit by Penguin see a decrease in traffic over a couple days, not six months. Should I concern myself with disavowing those spammy directory links, or focus my energy elsewhere? There are other plausible explanations for the decline. I haven't posted much content on the site in recent years, and have let my blog go fallow. Obviously, this needs to be fixed. My question is, in addition to my content development and quality linkbuilding efforts, should I be worried about those spammy links? For the record, this is a high-quality informational site with lots of high-quality links mixed in with the spammy ones. Thanks for any insight you can offer. qozm7Rr.png

Advice on links after Penguin hit
Firstly we have no warnings or messages in WMT. We have racked up thousands of anchor text urls. Our fault, we didnt nofollow and also some of our many cms sites replicated the links sitewide to the tune of 20,000 links. I`m in the process of removing the code which causes this problem in most of the culprit sites but how long will it take roughly for a crawl to recalculate the links? In my WMT it still shows the links increasing but I think this is retrospective data. However, after this crawl we should see a more relevant link count. We also provide some web software which has been used by many sites. Google may consider our followed anchor text violating spam rules. So I ask, if we were to change the link text to our url only and add nofollow, will this improve the spam issue? We could have as many as 4,000 links per website, as it is a calendar function and list all dates into the future.......and we would like to retain a link to our website of course for marketing purposes. What we dont want is sitewide link spam again. Some of our other links are low quality, some are okay. However, we have lost rankings, probably due to low quality links and overuse of anchor text.. Is this the case the Google has just devalued the links algorythmically or is there an actual penalty to make the rankings drop? As we have no warnings in WMT, I feel there isnt the need to remove the lower quality links and in most cases we havent control over the link placements. We should just rectify that we have a better future linking profile? If we have to remove spam links, then that can only be a good reason to cause negative seo?

How to get rid of black hat links?
I have recently discovered that one of my clients has either been sabotaged or has done this himself. In the case that he didn't do anything, how do you go about getting rid of bad links? There is now over a 1000 bad links linked to his site, do I report them as spam or what is the best way to fix this?

Link Building with links in footer of Word Press Themes- Is This BLack Hat??
I See lots of free word press themes with links in footer like Kids Headphones | Colombia Classifieds | Broadway Tickets Is this a valid white hat link building method? What if the theme looked like a particular industry and the links related to the industry would that be better?
