Google Places - Advanced Question

Hi All,
Ive found multiple threads about previous issues but I haven't found any tailored to my specific question.I know there are a large amount of factors so I wanted to see if any other individuals had ran into this previously.
We are currently in a centralized position in a major city. We are discussing moving the main office about 15 miles away into another city, moving us out of the main city where we have been for the past 3 years. The city where we are currently located has a lot more GEO search volume compared to the new city search terms and variants of.
If we move will our local rankings drop when someone searches in the city where we were previously? How long would it take for this ranking to fall? Or would we still rank because we are moving a short distance away and have a large amount of citations there?
I know we would need to change over all our online directories, on page etc..Any other suggestions on a smooth transition?
I know there are many factors that go into this and any past experience, guidance and/or assistance is greatly appreciated.

A couple of points to add:

This is partially the case, what I am also seeing is that the main URL (www.url.com) is ranking for many head terms (In the 7 Pack). Not including the Geo terms. Which seem to be driving a large percentage of the traffic. So it seems like there may not be much we can do about this, as that ranking in the 7 pack would remove over time. (This is my main concern because it seems to be pushing most of the traffic)
Also in the analytic platform I am seeing that a large majority of the searches are being made near the centralized position of the city. (Very close to our office now)
Since a large majority of the searches are being made from the centralized location would it be worth maintaining another small office in this area? From reading through some of your points seems like even if we don’t have an office in the area we can still rank a local page? But this wouldn’t be in the 7 pack hence a drop in CTR..?
Also just recently I discussed with another individual that had made a similar move. He informed me he communicated directly with Google to change the address as well as get the reviews pushed to the new location. (He said he saw a considerable drop in traffic and rankings in a short period of time) which I'm sure can be from numerous factors, just not sure if you have had similar experience.

I think the link to David Mihm's post http://moz.com/blog/local-search-moving-locations, is appropriate but I caution Sam not to panic in that SCORE had a major issue which created many of their problems prior to the move. SCORE, had a branding problem - NAME - wherein in Austin and nationwide the name had many variations. That in and of itself (NAP= Name, Address, Phone) played as much if not more of a role in their problems than the move did. What David Mihm gives that is great, is the information on how to address the move at the citation and directory level.

So that I am clear, you are currently in City A which has good ranking/traffic for city A plus keyword.You are concerned that when you move to city B you will lose ranking and traffic in City A.
If this is the case then the answer is yes, no, and maybe. I am not being flippant and I will offer you a way to handle it. Assuming there are good business reasons for the move and it is hard not to do it, then you need a strategy for retaining as much of what you have as possible. So, first and foremost you need to know what url (s) receive your CityA + keyword traffic (as you may need to do redirects after the move and you change the site to take into account the move).
Next, when you move to city b, you want to make sure you take care to handle your Google Places / Google plus correctly. Do not try to keep the old listing as it is a fools errand. Let me say the reason I tell you is that we work with clients who have made every Local / G+ / microsite vs. sub directory mistake known to man. The effort to fix what you will break by trying to have two locations with one not real or to keep the old and not use the new is well beyond benefit if you succeed. If you break this piece and the listings get merged in some way, you can spend a ton of $ and up to a year trying to correct it if you work with a Local pro.
If you look at your current rankings around CityA + KW, you will likely see that if you are in a 7 pack, that url will be different from any url ranking organically. Your concern re traffic, conversions, etc. will be to maintain organic as you will lose the ranking in 7 pack over time (anywhere from a week or two to several months depending on a lot of factors). So, where will that traffic go to? When you create the page(s) for city B + keyword, make sure you your url structure for City A either stays the same or is 301 redirected to new urls for the new CityA + KW url.
Next, if you are not currently using these next few things, they will assist you with maintaining your other rankings for CityA (If you are, keep it up):
Do you have Exif data in the images where you have City A images on the pages? Add it if not.
Do you have a Google maps API in the page with the location? (If the location is not there, put the map with the city only).
Are you using structured markup for place on all the pages for city A? If not, add it.
Pay attention to on-page SEO for city A (and B) + KW. So, url with cityA + KW. Title tag with same and following this convention (IMO): KW | City A | Brand, make sure your H1 has some version of KW and city A and that you have it appropriately in the content, alt text, etc.
The reason for all of this is that any place where you were weak before gives you room to improve with the hope the improvement offsets some of the negatives brought about by being in a different city.I really hope this helps you with the move. I can tell you we have clients who were using all types of devices trying to rank in cities where they were not located. When it was done cleanly, with the City + KW as an individual page/sub-directory and then a contact page with Google Map API as the "local" presence, we have shocked clients that they could be ranked and not be in the city. Understand, we are holistic in our SEO approach in that we believe in getting as close as possible to the holy grail of 100% SEO'd. (All, please no - Google doesn't want perfect SEO, etc. - I've heard it and read it; I also know what has worked in my efforts.)

If we move will our local rankings drop when someone searches in the city where we were previously? Yes, you will have to do much more work to rank for the previous location, being farther away from it. Google Local prefers to rank you locally. It is easier to move to a competitive area and rank well there and have a spill out effect to rank in low-competition areas. But since you are moving from high competition into low competition it will be more work to rank for that.

Website dropped out from Google index
Howdy, fellow mozzers. I got approached by my friend - their website is https://www.hauteheadquarters.com She is saying that they dropped from google index over night - and, as you can see if you google their name, website url or even site: , most of the pages are not indexed. Home page is nowhere to be found - that's for sure. I know that they were indexed before. Google webmaster tools don't have any manual actions (at least yet). No sudden changes in content or backlink profile. robots.txt has some weird rule - disallow everything for EtaoSpider. I don't know if google would listen to that - robots checker in GWT says it's all good. Any ideas why that happen? Any ideas what I should check? P.S. Just noticed in GWT there was a huge drop in indexed pages within first week of August. Still no idea why though. P.P.S. Just noticed that there is noindex x-robots-tag in headers... Anyone knows where this can be set?

Google not taking Meta...
Hello all, So I understand that Google may sometimes take content from the page as a snippet to display on SERPs rather than the meta description, but my problem goes a little beyond that. I have a section on my site which updates everyday so a lot of the content is dynamics (products for a shop, every morning unique stock is added or removed), and despite having a meta description, title and receiving an 'A' grade in the MOZ on page grader, these pages never show up in Google. After a little research I did a 'site:www.mysite.com/productpage' in Google and this indeed listed all my products, but interestingly for every single one Google had taken the copyright notice at the bottom of the page as the snippet instead of the meta or any H1, H2 or P text on the page... Does anyone have any idea why Google is doing this? It would explain a lot to me in terms of overall traffic, I'm just out of ideas... Thanks!

Metatags on drupal question
Hi Im quite inexperienced on drupal (normally an umbraco user!) and im having some difficulty with the Metatags on the CMS. I have been applying Meta Title and descriptions to the individual pages however they only appear when i preview the page and not when the page is saved. When i go into the metatag section located at /admin/config/search/metatags i am given a list of settings including Global: Front Page and Node. Im sure the reason it keeps defaulting the metatags back is to do with this but im not sure what to change to apply my own Thanks in advance

Does putting a Google custom search box on make Google think my users are bouncing?
I added a Google custom search box to my pages, that's doing an advanced Google search. A lot of people are using it. So users are coming to my site from a Google search, and then often performing another Google search on my site. Should I be worried that Google may interpret the resultant user behavior as a bounce or pogo-stick? Or will the fact that the second search occurred on my site, using custom search, and with advanced parameters signal to Google that this is not a dissatisfied user returning to Google? Thanks

Google Plus Authorship
Situation Description: I have a website called Website A. I wish to migrate alot of the content from Website A to Website B. Website B will be on a completely different domain name and environment. Authors of Website A will act as contributing authors for Website B. It is also possible that other contributing authors of other websites C and D commit to writing content on Website B. Questions (1) Does it make sense to create a google plus profile under UserA@websiteA.com and link from content on websiteB to their google plus profile under UserA@websiteA.com? (2) Does AuthorRank affect PageRank? If yes, if I take the above approach would websiteA be effected or websiteB since the content writers of websiteA are contributing to websiteB? (3) Is it ok for userA to have a corporate google plus profile assuming he might also have another google plus profile under a different address? I always think it make sense that there exists a google plus profile at an employee level and another google plus profile at a personal level. (4) If an employee leaves the company, do I leave his/hers Google Plus profile alive? The fact that no more content would be published under that particular profile, would that negatively effect author rank over time? (5) Another interesting observation is that UsaToday, CNN etc do not use authorship? No authors link to their twitter profile or google plus profile. Shouln't they be doing this in terms of author rank or is author rank not that important? Thank you

Google Places Multiple Location
Hi everyone, I have a client with multiple locations in the same city. I would like to have their Goolge places listing show up under the main website listing. Currently, one of the Google places listings in being pulled in directly below the main website but not the other. The Zagat rating is being pulled in as well. I would like to have both locations show up when you type in the name of the business. Any ideas how to do this?

Google Places
If you rank on google places, I have noticed that you do not rank on the front page as well. I have a site that ranks on front page for it's keywords; however, because they are (1) on google places, they don't show up when someone is localized to that area. They show up on google places but not on front page. If you turn of localization, they are first in serps. How can I get around this? Two separate sites? One for Google+ (Places) and one for SERPS?

Google bot vs google mobile bot
Hi everyone 🙂 I seriously hope you can come up with an idea to a solution for the problem below, cause I am kinda stuck 😕 Situation: A client of mine has a webshop located on a hosted server. The shop is made in a closed CMS, meaning that I have very limited options for changing the code. Limited access to pagehead and can within the CMS only use JavaScript and HTML. The only place I have access to a server-side language is in the root where a Defualt.asp file redirects the visitor to a specific folder where the webshop is located. The webshop have 2 "languages"/store views. One for normal browsers and google-bot and one for mobile browsers and google-mobile-bot.In the default.asp (asp classic). I do a test for user agent and redirect the user to one domain or the mobile, sub-domain. All good right? unfortunately not. Now we arrive at the core of the problem. Since the mobile shop was added on a later date, Google already had most of the pages from the shop in it's index. and apparently uses them as entrance pages to crawl the site with the mobile bot. Hence it never sees the default.asp (or outright ignores it).. and this causes as you might have guessed a huge pile of "Dub-content" Normally you would just place some user-agent detection in the page head and either throw Google a 301 or a rel-canon. But since I only have access to JavaScript and html in the page head, this cannot be done. I'm kinda running out of options quickly, so if anyone has an idea as to how the BEEP! I get Google to index the right domains for the right devices, please feel free to comment. 🙂 Any and all ideas are more then welcome.
