How to track click on phone number on mobile device in GA as a goal?

Hi,
I work with a lot of physicians and one of the things I'd like to do is add a goal in GA so we can try to track how many visitors are clicking the phone # to call the office from smartphones.

Would doing this be as straight-forward as adding a the standard javascript click text that I'd add for an external link?

And Is there a way to make a goal only "count" if the user-agent is a smartphone? Because if I attach the JS to the phone #, it's going to be in all of the HTML regardless of which device is used. Unless of course, I mess with the CSS to only make the javascript code appear on certain stylesheets.

Hopefully too not many people will click that link on the desktop version... But there's always some silly user who is the exception.

Yeah you know that's a good question. This is a responsive site I'm gathering (good on ya!) so I see the dilemma.
But yes I believe in the Advanced Segment you can parse events triggered via mobile devices.
Also you should be able to build a custom report which should allow you to filter by OS which would even allow you to break down the data by iOS, Android, Windows Phone, etc.

Well I have the phone number on the responsive site (for example) as HTML text like this
123-456-7890
Can I track this as an event as you suggest?
I see this code below from the link, but it looks like I need to have the phone # as a link....
Other than the ability to add GA code, is this:
123-456-7890
the same as this ### 1-847-555-5555

Agree with Jesse, using GA Event Tracking will help you track clicks on the mobile button. Within GA, you can slice and dice the information a few ways to see mobile users exclusively.
One option is to use the "Advanced Segments" feature to view "Mobile Traffic" and then drill down via the Content > Events > Top Events report.

Well I'm assuming you have a "Click to Call" button setup meaning you have a separate mobile site?
If so, I would simply add a Google analytics event to said button on your mobile site and label it something like "mobile-call" or whatever. Are you familiar with Event Tracking? If not, go here - https://developers.google.com/analytics/devguides/collection/gajs/eventTrackerGuide

Hello All, I want to do banner conversion tracking for my ecommerce site. That is at my homepage I display 4 banners with special offers on 4 different products. Now that 4 products are already falls in relevant categories. I did event tracking for banners from where I can know how many clicks I am getting from each banner but My Query is how to know conversion of all 4 banner products because once I create goal that is funnel like 1) home page 2) product page 3) checkout step 4) Thank you page. But problem comes here is if anyone purchase these product from categories that also comes in goal so how to differentiate conversion of products from homepage and category pages? GA Landing Page Inaccuracies
I had seen a thread on this a while back but no solution posted. There was a link posted to someone else explaining the issue but I got a 404 when clicking. Have a client that does mostly PPC and they are getting their conversion page showing up as landing page from paid many times. This is definitely not a sitelink, etc. The only way you get to this page is if you filled out the form. There are a few other pages showing up as landing pages that don't make sense too. Can this be attributed to someone being "inactive" for 30 minutes and then coming back and performing an action on this page (leaving)? If so, does this double count the conversion if a page visit here is a conversion? Just trying to make sense of the landing page report showing so many instances of our conversion page. Large number of Temporary Redirects
Hey, I own a large ecommerce site with a few thousand products. The platform we are using adds a default French, English, and German store. It is not out of the question to offer french version of our site in the future, but for the time being we have added temporary redirects on these pages back to the main (english) version. In my Moz analytics, there are 1000+ pages with temporary redirects, and Moz classifies these as medium priority. Is there a better solution to dealing with these default language pages? Thanks,

Can you get local search numbers/traffic out of Google Analytics?
With Google's new local search I am more curious as to market penetration on keywords that are now localized to my different US cities. I understand that you can separate out Google traffic based on regional Google domains, but I am curious if there is an effective way to separate out searches and keywords based on a my local US Metros?
