Duplicate Content issue: Amazon book review & company blog
-
Can my site be penalized for including a book review verbatim in my blog that I also post on Amazon? What are the steps I need to take? I have written a book review that I want to post on Amazon. I am also planning to create a blog post and include the exact text of the review within the post which I will then also promote on my social channels. What do I need to watch out for in terms of duplicate content? Is there a sequence I should follow? We have the rel=canonical tag on our site which is WordPress.

Thanks so much for the thorough answer, Paul. I was hoping I would get answers like these so I can go ahead. I appreciate your comments about ranking although, I am not sure I am concerned about that so much in this instance. I'll have to give it some thought.

Thank you, Martijn. Just the answer I was hoping to hear.

Agree with Martin - a single page like this won't be a problem as far as something like Panda penalising for dupe content.
However the challenge will be to get your page rank for the terms in the review ahead of the Amazon page (which is on such a strong domain that it will overpower your own page). To give your page the best chance, you'll want to publish your post that includes the review first, making sure you've hit all the on-page optimisation. It would also be good to have additional text to add to the review - an intro paragraph and summary for example. Then wait until it has been indexed in Google, while building at least a few links to your page - social mentions are great for this, as you mention.
Once your own post is indexed and ranking (do a search for a specific phrase from your review, for example) then you can post it on Amazon, This way, hopefully the search engines will have enough cues to recognise that your blog page was the first and definitive source for the review. Doesn't' always work but this gives you the best shot.
Nothing about canonicalisation on your blog page is going to help with this process. However, it certainly could be beneficial to have rel=author attribution from Google+ implemented on your blog.
Hope that helps answer the second part of your question?
Paul

Hi Gina,
No you won't get penalized for only copying the review about a book on your blog while it's also on Amazon. It's only one page so Google won't make this a huge problem for your site.

Facebook: reaching audience who have liked / shared my content
Hi, I am new to social, so the question might be a bit beginner. If I put a like / share / recommend button on my site, or maybe a comment box, how can I reach audiences at a later time, who have interacted with my plugins (liked/shared/commented)? Paid ads would be one solution, but for now I am interested in organic (free) targeting. So if people who share my content do not become fans at the same time, how can I engage them in new updates about my page? Thanks for thoughts.

301 redirect for blog post URL change
I'm thinking about changing the URL for a new blog post that I have already promoted off-site today. I overlooked a detail and am gently kicking myself. I can't determine if it's worth any negative issues that adjusting it might create vs the value of having a more "perfect" URL. Would it be OK to do this by applying a 301 redirect to the page? Would this be the right thing to do or is there some other way? Thanks!!

How to coordinate blog, facebook and twitter.
I have a small law firm with a website including a blog, as well as accounts with Twitter and FB. I usually write a blog on the website then reference and link to that blog from twitter and FB. I also do short blogs that are basically links to other interesting articles about my field, and link to those as well. Is this helpful or correct from he perspective of SEO for the website? Is there a particular way to do this? I have much to learn so any comments are welcome. Many thanks.

Google Autor Profiles in Big Companies
I work for a big company and they want to use the google autor tag. The goal is to get the rich snippets and better rankings in the future from having a trusworthy autor for each topic building up followers basically. The problem is that the company does not want to pay employees to build up their own autor profiles/trust since an employee could leave the company any time and we would have to start from scratch building another autor profile. Now I know that google only wants real people in google plus bla bla ... bla bla ... How do you guys handle this problem? I thought of having our autors sharing one made up autor profile which is owned by the company.

Is it worth setting up a Google Plus page for your blog?
Hi All, OK we all know the merit in G+, Authorship etc. I'm a regular user on G+ and I work hard to keep my profile up to date and with fresh content. I have no doubt my increased number of followers has helped my blog rank (which my G+ account is linked to). My question is - is there any merit at all in setting up a separate page for my blog so I can get +1s for it (probably very few). Much like any company page that gets +1s and people to follow that company. Or is this just plain silly and I should concentrate on building my personal profile? Thanks
