Google Hummingbird Update - Any Changes ?
-
Google has update with the new alogrithm and did you see any effects and as they are not revelaing the techinicaly how they work ?
What's your opinion ?
-
Good article. Thanks for posting
I need to read some more on it.
I wondered how the refinement might influence the Title content.
I don't typically include "buy" in the title but I've got to look at our serps and re-think this.
-
phew I haven't been effected however Chris has posted some interesting results showing the hummingbird impact on search results.
-
Sorry... I thought that you were telling me off lol!
I'm glad that I have answered your question.
-
I'm curious if/how this will affect how many keywords to put in the title tag (for ecommerce - catetories and product names/titles).
If its related primarily to conversational search it sounds like something I won't be sweating.
-
Sorry, I'm not following you here.
I replied to the initial question:
"Google has update with the new alogrithm and did you see any effects and as they are not revelaing the techinicaly how they work ?
What's your opinion ?"
At least that's what I thought I was doing, but I am new to Moz, so could be wrong!
-
You answered my question so it didn't seem dated to me.
-
Sorry AWCthreads, I didn't realise that you had already covered that... Unfortunately I didn't see your post at the time of writing and I wouldn't want folks thinking I just copied you lol.
I started writing my post about an hour ago and got distracted before coming back to it.

Related to conversational search. Good to know.
Thanks David.

Although a lot of SEOs and Marketers are only hearing about Hummingbird for the first time this week, it has been running as the new "Engine" for around a month or so.
Google’s saying there’s nothing for SEOs or publishers worry about as there's no need for us to change what we're doing. Given that there hasn't been a marked shift in rankings over the last month (certainly not on the same scale as with Penguin, Panda or Caffeine updates were rolled out anyway), it's suggested that Hummingbird isn't something to fear.
From what I can gather, it is an added level of intelligence which has been plugged into Google Search in order to improve long tail search results and results for Conversational Search.
Anyway, I hope that my reply is helpful!

Two primary areas of focus for Hummingbird:
1. Better results for longer tail keyword inquiries
2. Voice command results
The public is becoming more seasoned at search as the years go by so they are comfortable adding more terms to their search.
IMO, social has also helped educate internet users for specificity: @xyz or .com/xyz etc. We're actually telling people what to enter after a hash-tag. Unthinkable a few years ago.
I'm curious if/how this will affect how many keywords to put in the title tag (for ecommerce - catetories and product names/titles).
-
Yes, they rolled it out a month ago. http://searchengineland.com/google-hummingbird-172816
I think the consensus is nothing much has changed on our end. That's certainly what I'm seeing.
This is more of a their-end overhaul from what I understand.

Have they rolled our the new algo?

Image URL Change Catastrophe
We have a site with over 3mm pages indexed, and an XML sitemap with over 12mm images (312k indexed at peak). Last week our traffic dropped off a cliff. The only major change we made to the site in that time period was adding a DNS record for all of our images that moved them from a SoftLayer Object Storage domain to a subdomain of our site. The old URLs still work, but we changed all the links from across our site to the new subdomain. The big mistake we made was that we didn't update our XML sitemap to the new URLs until almost a week after the switch (totally forgot that they were served from a process with a different config file). We believe this was the cause of the issue because: The pages that dropped in traffic were the ones where the images moved, while other pages stayed more or less the same. We have some sections of our property where the images are, and have always been, hosted by Amazon and their rankings didn't crater. Same with pages that do not have images in the XML sitemap (like list pages). There wasn't a change in geographic breakdown of our traffic, which we looked at because the timing was around the same time as Pigeon. There were no warnings or messages in Webmaster Tools, to indicate a manual action around something unrelated. The number of images indexed in our sitemap according Webmaster Tools dropped from 312k to 10k over the past week. The gap between the change and the drop was 5 days. It takes Google >10 to crawl our entire site, so the timing seems plausible. Of course, it could be something totally unrelated and just coincidence, but we can't come up with any other plausible theory that makes sense given the timing and pages affected. The XML sitemap was updated last Thursday, and we resubmitted it to Google, but still no real change. Anyone had a similar experience? Any way to expedite the climb back to normal traffic levels? Page position dropped on Google
Hey Guys, My web designer has recommended this forum to use, the reason being: my google position has been dropped from page 1 to page 10 in the last week. The site is weloveschoolsigns.co.uk, but our main business site is textstyles.co.uk the school signs are a product of text styles. I have been told off my SEO company, that because I have changed the school logo to the text styles logo, Google have penalised me for it, and dropped us from page 1 for numerous keywords, to page 10 or more. They have also said that duplicate content within the school site http://www.weloveschoolsigns.co.uk/school-signs-made-easy/ has also a contributed to the drop in positions. (this content is not on the textstyles site) Lastly they said, that having the same telephone number is a definate no no. They said that I have been penalised, because google see the above as trying to monopolise on the market. I don’t know if all this is true, as the SEO is way above my head, but they have quoted me £1250 to repair all the errors, when the site only cost £750. They have also mentioned that because of the above changes, the main text styles site will also be punished. Any thoughts on this matter would be much appreciated as I don't know whether to pay them to crack on, or accept the new positions. Either way I'm very confused. Thanks Thomas

Will changing Google Places address hurt rankings?
I have a client transferring ownership of their service business (photo booth rental). The current listed address will change, so my main concern is preserving the rankings during the transition. Should I change the Google Local listing to a new physical address, or change it to "serve a surrounding area"? It seems best to set as "serving a surrounding area", but I know Google is really weird about making local listing changes. I've seen and heard about countless listings falling completely off the map after being updated. Any advice appreciated.

Am I buying links according to Google?
I have the opportunity to sponsor a variety of sections in a variety of .edu sites. Really appealing since they will both provide high quality traffic as well as to help our rankings... (maybe 🙂 )... Anyway this opportunity involves a monetary exchange, no different than advertising in Adwords and/or buying a display ad with the NYT. The links will be both text and banner... With follow links. My questions to you guys are: Is this practice penalize? And will display ads pass link juice also? Thanks for the help...

Does Google punish sites for Backlinks?
Here is Matt Cutts video, for those of you who have not seen it already. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f4dAWb5jUws (Very Short) In this Video Matt explains that Google does not look at backlinks. Many link spamming sites have detected, there have been many website receiving warning messages in their Google web tools to deindex these links, etc.. My theory is that Google will not punish sites for backlinks. However, they manually check for "link farming sites" and warn anyone affiliated with them, just in case these links were built from a competitor. This way they can eliminate all the "Bad Link Farm" sites and not hurt anyone who does not deserve to be hurt. Google is not going to give us all their information to rank, they dont want us to rank. They want us to PPC. However, they do want to have the best SERPs available. I call it Google juggling! Thoughts?

Getting a site to rank in both google.com and google.co.uk
I have a client who runs a yacht delivery company. He gets business from the US and the UK but due to the nature of his business, he isn't really based anywhere except in the middle of the ocean somewhere! His site is hosted in the US, and it's a .com. I haven't set any geographical targeting in webmaster tools either. We're starting to get some rankings in google US, but very little in google UK. It's a small site anyway, and he'd prefer not to have too much content on the site saying he's UK based as he's not really based anywhere. Any ideas on how best to approach this?
