What Would You Consider a Good Backlink Profile?
-
I know there's no such thing as a perfect profile but when you're building links, do you try to maintain certain ratios such as:
- dofollow vs. nofollow
- exact match anchors vs. raw URL anchors vs. random anchors (click here, visit site, etc.)
Thanks!

On the dofollow vs. nofollow thing, I've written about it before:
Don't worry too much about that. I don't think it's suspicious to have 0 nofollow links, and I don't think Google could draw any valid conclusions based on that alone.
Anchor text is a little trickier. Penguin initially set a pretty low bar - even at 50% high-value anchor text you were pretty much safe. They've since honed in, and will continue to do so. More importantly, they're looking at non-achor-text ways to target manipulative links. Generally speaking, if you can control the anchor text, it has a high potential to be a manipulative link. This is what happens when you "build" or "earn" links rather than trying to build an audience.
Look one step down the funnel, instead: rather than looking about the perfect links individually, look at how you're going to get the perfect links. For example, rather than trying to build anchor text, build a good piece of content that will also get you relevant anchor text. Want to rank for insurance terms? Build a bunch of useful content pieces around insurance.

As a link builder - I would not pay attention to dofollow vs. nofollow ratios. Just go and try to get the best links you can, whether followed or no-followed.
As far as the anchors - I would personally allow the anchors to be as natural as possible, so when you ask for a link to a page from a webmaster, don't even include what you would like the anchor to be - just let them pick naturally.

Good idea? bad idea?
Hi guys there's a campaign (which I am very passionate about) to save our village pub from being developed. Now I have bought a domain name www dot SaveTheRoyalOak dot com I've forwarded this domain to sussexchef.com/save-the-royal-oak I'm using forward masking so the url remains save the royal oak, I will contain the few pages to do with the pub so that the navigation bars are hidden so the site will pretty much look be it's own entity to the user. this micro site will get hundreds of users and people linking to it, My question is will this hurt my site at all? I'm guessing that when I ask people to link to it I should get them to "no follow" it to be on the safe side? Thanks for your help All the best Ben

Natural or Unnatural backlinks
Somebody embedded a link to one of my websites on the sidebar of her blog. It ends up hundreds of links from this blog. Will this type of links be considered unnatural links by Google? Here is the url of the blog. http://chordsandmore.blogspot.com/ To find the link to my site, please search "yoke wong". Thanks.

Trading Backlinks a good idea?
New to the "backlinking" party. Wondering if its 'good practice' to trade links with other websites within a like-industry. We've been receiving a lot of emails from other websites asking us to trade links. Is this a good link building practice anymore? Thanks!

Which is More Powerful? Content or Backlinks: Ecommerce Sales
Hello, Which do you guys think would bring in more sales: doubling the content across all category pages and top 30 products, or getting 10% more good unique root domain backlinks from broken link building? 350 products in total 50 main categories 150 subcategories. Product page content would be frequently asked questions for the product and would be added by the site owner who is an expert. Thanks.

Is guest posting still a good idea?
Lately the changes in Google all revolve around reducing the power of "self made links". We've seen blog networks devalued and low quality directories devalued. We've also seen people penalized for unnatural patterns of anchor text. With all of this in mind, I'm wondering how much time I should be putting in to guest posting. It seems to me like the safest focus should be on creating great content and then promoting that content. But it's so much easier to spend a few minutes writing an article for someone else and getting an anchor texted link back to mine. To most, guest posting is still considered white hat. But really, when you look at it, you are providing a webmaster content in return for a link back to your site. But it is definitely not a natural vote for your website. It is really just a self made link. If I were Google, I think it would be quite easy to find ways to determine what is a guest post that was created simply to get a link back to a site. And then I would devalue the links from those posts. What do you think? Do you still do much guest posting?
