Paid links from directory listing and business listing sites are good or bad according to Penguin 2.1 update?
-
Hi Friends,
Recently on October 4th, 2013, a new spam filtering algorithm got live named Penguin 21. / Penguin 5.
The update goes after sites that may have purchased paid links.
I would like to know is it safe, if we submit website details with links in paid directories, eg: https://ecom.yahoo.com/dir/submit/intro/ (yahoo directory) and quality business listing sites provided the categories are related to our website.
Our competitor sites having the backlinks from those kind of directories and they are performing (ranking) well in major search engines.
May I know how Google treat these kinds of links according to this recent algorithm update?

Thanks for your reply.
I have one more doubt. If I am going to get links from say 10-20 links from paid web directories/ business listing sites which is of high PR (pr 5 and above) and quality sites, will it affect my website ranking?
eg: http://www.rddesignlondon.co.uk/best-paid-directories-for-seo/

This is a complicated question because there's a sliding scale of directories out there. On a scale of 1 to 10, with one being 'getting you penalized' and 10 being 'increasing your rankings', I would put the Yahoo directory (the $299/yr one) at an 8 or so.
The yahoo directory is a rare example of a directory that is of value despite it being paid but for the most part I would steer clear of paid inclusion directories unless they have a true logical value, i.e. customers going to the directory to legitimately find a web site or business.

EMD's How much should you offer for a good one?
Hi Everyone, I am launching out into an e-commerce site and I am looking at purchasing an EMD as my brand. The brand of product I am selling is different "brand" but the e-commerce brand I will be building will be for a three word keyword that is competitive and gets great traffic. My questions are these: 1. Is an EMD worth it? The asking price is $42k for a site that is a keyword that gets 60k searches per month. 2. How much should offer without being rude to the seller? 3. The $42k represents a significant portion of my start up cash. Forget converting, (that will be an ongoing tweak that I am committed to perform) will a good EMD help brand the site and drive the traffic? My thinking is that with social media and ppc you could burn through that money and not be any further ahead. Thanks a ton in advance for the weigh in. Happy Holidays everyone. Gary

Cleaning up after Penguin | Next steps?
Background:
Industry News | | godreamvacations
We've come to the realization that Google's Penguin update back in 2013 has penalized us and are just now attending to the issue. We had subscribed to a link-building service for years and just recently cancelled their services. Unfortunately those links are still out there. We've submitted a disavow list to Google on January 14, 2014; but there is no way to tell when/if they processed it. Our homepage used to rank in the top three listings for our main keyword, but now we're somewhere around #31 on page 4. It's not even our homepage that ranks any longer either; its a page specifically created recently that is tailored to our main keyword. What I've Done So Far Using MOZ, I determined our homepage was using our keyword 53 times in various ways; so I dwindled that down to 27. I built a new page tailored to our main keyword that apparently is ranking in Google as #31 now; not gaining any placement at all though. I've implemented canonical tags in the <header>of most pages (usually just linked to itself to minimize duplicate pages being detected from URL variables and such). I've worked on Title and meta description length issues. Duplicate Content?
We sell hotels, so we have a ton of internal links 500+ hotels, linking to/from one another. One page might have 100 hotel links (all internal). Another category page might be duplicating half of those links. For example, we have 200 all-inclusive resorts, so they are listed as links with the hotel name and a short description. On an adults-only page, we have 100 resorts, but 75 of them are the same resorts as on the all-inclusive page; so it may appear like duplicate content. << Not sure how to combat this. ? Too Many internal Links on Homepage?
Our homepage: navigation bar has 68 links, rest of page has ~74 links. I've read that that's too many and other people say it's fine as long as your page has textual content that is long enough. Any thoughts? Domain Name Change?
An SEO company that we talked to said they would transform our site into a Wordpress-based site for SEO reasons and that we should change our domain name; thus starting fresh and ridding us of the bad/spammy links that are coming to us. They also said they have several high-quality ranking pages that they would write articles on and link to us. Considering we don't have many good links to our site to begin with, what are your thoughts on a domain name change? It's drastic and we're not that open to the idea (yet). Would the SEO's link-building technique be what MOZ is talking about in his video 7 days ago. If so, I think that's a scary route to take; especially when after we stop the SEO's services, they said our links would come off those pages. Won't google see that happen and flag us as using black-hat tactics? As for Wordpress; we have 500+ hotels.. so that's doable, but a chore in itself. If our CMS code and website can be cleaned up some I think our custom CMS is fine for SEO. Any WP fanatics out there think WP is good for 700+ page sites? *we already have our CMS programmed to pull data from vendors; so that code would need rewritten also to work with WP. Analytics Data
I reviewed Google Analytics closely looking at the google organic traffic closely from Jan 2012 till now and I don't see any sudden drops; just gradual decreases. Is this normally the case for Penguin-hit sites; or shouldn't there be a sudden drop in organic traffic? If you've read this far; THANK YOU. Any comments to the above questions are appreciated. </header>0 -

Small Business SEO Recommendations
I work for a company that manages websites for several hundred small businesses. We do a good job with on-site optimization but don't do any link building for our clients. Occasionally, clients are in desperate need of links and ask us for recommendations. I've had a tough time finding a balance between quality consultants and affordable prices. I understand that link building campaigns, in general, carry a hefty price tag, but of our clients can't afford any of the big name agencies. We've also had a few of our clients get burned recently by bad link building and I don't want to point them in the wrong direction. Does anyone have any recommendations for companies or freelance consultants that do good work without breaking the bank? Thanks! Tim

Is it OK to discuss SEO for an adult site?
Hey guys, I run a few big tube sites and sales pages that contain adult material. I'm also new to these forums, so before I do anything that might be considered rude or innapropriate, I wanted to know what the stance was on asking for advice related to the SEO of my adult sites and/or posting links. I've read the Etiquette disclaimer, however, I don't actually intend to post images or anything of the sort, only ask for your opinions and preferred strategies. If its completely frowned upon, then I completely understand and will never bring the subject back up again. Cheers and Happy to be amongst you all!

Google driving me Nuts - How do you combine 2 accounts?
I know this must be driving a lot of other people mad as I see loads of people who now have 2 registered accounts at google plus due to their seemingly terrible ability to merge or connect accounts. We have a work email address set up through google, then I have a personal Gmail address. In Google Plus now I have 2 profiles - even though I have not signed up to google plus with my work email, I cannot add this email to my Google + account set up on personal email as it just tells me to log into that account taking me to a page to set up a profile for that account. Has anyone managed to solve this problem - it is happening to everyone in the company, driving us all nuts and our IT guys have no idea how to solve it. Were trying to use G+ for the purposes of SEO & Marketing, but if they make it this cumbersome for people to use, then they are going to die a quick death - after a few weeks of use and noticing the huge number of dead accounts, only live accounts being SEO/Internet Marketing related, and huge number of duplicate accounts, I think their user figures are hugely suspect! Rant over - anyone know how to merge accounts?
