Ranking without links but through Social Media popularity

Does anyone have an example of a web page that is ranking soley through social media popularity and does not have any inbound (website to website) links? I am creating a presentation on SEO and Social Media and it would be great to have an example.

Have you tried removing the keyword " Gareth Hoyle" from the title to see if it still ranks? Ok I also wonder if this still would have worked if your domain authority was a bit lower..

I had help from the UK seo community doing a Google +1 experiment recently - it's a bit silly but I think this is what you're looking for. http:// [www] davidsottimano [.com] /gareth-hoyle-sexiest-man-alive/ (purposely not a link!). I think it had around 40-50 +1's last time I checked.

Sorry I don't have any good examples of universal organic rankings. You might have better results with personalized rankings, i.e. Google+ posts. http://moz.com/blog/using-google-plus-to-appear-in-the-top-results-every-time-whiteboard-friday
As Christy mentioned, it's very hard to find these types of results in the wild as any page with decent social metrics is linked to by aggregators like Topsy, All-top, etc.

I am revising my own answer to this: "It would be a very unusual case for a webpage to earn links from social media without earning them from other types of web pages as well." That said, I will ask some colleagues if they know of a case study and report back to you!Christy

Thanks for getting back to me. I did not express myself well in the question I posted. I am looking for a webpage that ranked only though incoming social media links and not from other webpages. Many well known experts have been posting for awhile that social media will impact your SEO and I agree with this. It would be really nice though to find an example of this. I am trying to find this example so I can do an article about it. Thanks!

Hi Carla, it's extremely difficult to use social media without creating links -- regardless of your intention (see http://moz.com/blog/the-top-4-ways-to-use-social-media-to-earn-links-whiteboard-friday.) Without inbound links it shouldnt be that possible to rank well with just social media. It is possible to improve or lead with help of it but shouldnt be just enough to be popular and rank well.
If there is some example for it would be great to learn.

I don't think Google directly takes social media signals into consideration. More social shares generally indicate better rankings, but it's generally a co-relation: http://moz.com/search-ranking-factors
More social shares = more exposure = more chances of attracting links

We are using BuzzSumo to explore the types of content that generate the highest number of shares per article. Does anyone have data to suggest that a share on Google+ carries more ranking weight than a share on Twitter or Facebook, or LinkedIn? Hi Mozzers, I have a couple of questions regarding starting out into social media with an e-commerce website. Most of my experience lies in niche content where a social media following is more natural. Having completed most of the site audit (at least the planning). Its time to begin planning the next move into writing articles on the blog and heading out into social media to facilitate link building whilst i finish off creating the last of the updated website content. I have plenty of subjects I can think to write about and many keywords to target with articles on the website. But I could do with some advice linking this into social media. We have youtube, google+, facebook and twitter accounts but all of them are inactive bar profile information and have almost no following. We sell technical measurement equipment across a selection of niches. My plan is as follows so far, 1. Write 5-10 amazing new articles across the selection of products

3. Populate the website homepage with links to all our social media accounts to encourage following

Does Social Media hold value with SEO? If so then how?
Hey So I've been doing some research and it looks like theres a "human authority" and a "Page authority". I dont know if it is still relevant or if it has all changed because of Panda. Does social media still hold any SEO value? Do social media platforms like Pinterest and Youtube and twitter drive any valuable Anchor texts to your domain boostin your domain's authority or the page that it is linking to's authority?

Value in content from website being shared across social media?
If I write content (small career advice quotes) on my website and I distribute across Twitter and FB I assume my site will get the full credit (from an SEO perspective) since that is where the content was originally uploaded. However, will I still get SEO credit for being active on social media, or will Google view it as duplicate content and evaluate that I am not active on social media? thank you

Hi everyone! , i am a rookie with SEO. I have a very specific question for which i would love to hear your opinions on this. I have a facebook fan page about my company. We try to post quality stuff in regard to the industry we are in. However, we are social people, and i have seen improvements whenever we post more "social" topics such as TGIF, Photos, DIY themes. How does SEOMoz Code its Social Badge on Blog
On the blog section (and most other pages of the site) there is a social badge on the right hand side of the page where it shows the number of followers on Twitter, FB fans, etc. How does SEOMoz pull those numbers? It seems like its not using the normal Javascritps supplied by FB and Twitter, Feedburner. Thanks

Identifying Social Activity of Competition in Open Site Explorer.
Analysing the competition in Open Site Explorer, as you all know the results come back with the following detail: Facebook Shares Facebook Likes Tweets Google +1 There is no link through to the pages that have liked, followed or tweeted the URL. I want to understand what the competition is doing in moire detail. How are these numbers actually defined? Is their any way (or whats the best way) to identify the individual pages that the numbers refer to? Thanks in advance. Justin

Do facebook shares pass share juice the same way links pass link juice?
If i have a page on my domain say PAGE-A and let's say it's located at: http://www.mydomain.com/something/page-a and this page has quite a lot of page authority from many many inbound links. It is my understanding that if i "sculpt" the internal links on PAGE-A to point at only my primary targets, let's call the PAGE-B, PAGE-C, and PAGE-D; then those pages would gain some benefit from this link juice flowing through. Consider a similar situation where i have a page, say PAGE-F located at: http://www.mydomain.com/anotherpage/page-F and page-F gets 150 facebook shares. would the links on page-F pass this benefit on in any way? Or is only the direct target of the facebook share gaining benefit from this facebook sharing? Furthermore, lets consider a scenario where there are 30 or 40 similar pages like PAGE-F all with links out to my primary targets. Would these primary targets gain anything as these 30 or 40 pages gained facebook shares? Repeat above question, replace 'facebook' with 'twitter'. repeat again for 'google+' ?
