Percentage of brand links if brand is exact match
-
I'm dealing with a website that received a partial links penalty with no example provided the first time around. Clean up was done and we submitted for reconsideration. We were notified that the penalty is still in place and given 3 example links that are all from blog rolls. The puzzling thing is they are all natural links using the brand name. The domain name is an EMD, so it seems the logical explanation is that when your brand is and EMD, it's no longer the natural type of link it used to be. If this is the case, does anyone have any recommendation regarding a "safe" percentage of external links using the brand as the anchor? Thanks.

Very curious Google would send you those links. Is there any reason to think they are non-editorial? Perhaps they were placed as part of automation or copy and pasted from another site template? Is there any relationship between the tree sites?
In my experience, there's no safe level of anchor text ratios. And exact match branded links can cause you trouble, especially for sites with lower Domain Authority. Mix these with low quality links and it's a headache combination.
Unfortunately, even if the links are editorial, your best bet may be to get them removed.
You could also try submitting another reconsideration request and explain why those links are editorial. By definition, most blogroll links aren't editorial (as they are placed by a CMS automatically on each page rather than a human) so this may be an uphill battle.
Keep us updated. Best of luck!

I am not sure your use of the term "natural links" is the same as everyone else?
A natural link is one that you did not place yourself. I have a feeling you are using it in the context of it being brand related? Would I be correct?
Regardless, remove those blog roll links ASAP they are an totally no no regardless of the anchor text. Google hates them and were a huge target in the recent Panda Update.
If you have an EMD its a hard thing to market now. Google does not care so much about anchor text when it comes to ranking, it cares about the link itself and will get the information it needs from the landing page. That's why good on page SEO is vital.
Try to use your url as much as possible as anchor text and various other generic anchors like "click here", "more info" etc...
But I would advise if you have a Manual penalty from Google? That you disavow or remove as much of those links as possible.
Hope that helps?

Linking Etiquette
Hi Moz Community, Long time lurker, first time poster. I work for a real estate firm and have recently done some link analysis. I'm noticing that my company is not getting linked to as frequently as we should be. Several news outlets (including NYT & Bloomberg) have cited our reports, interviews with employees and other original content belonging to my company without linking back to our site (although they do mention us). Some publications are even linking back to our competitors for similar content but not ours. Is it appropriate to reach out and ask for links from these outlets after they've been published? Does anybody have tips on making others aware we want links shared for future articles? Thanks in advance!

Links in product UI
We have a SaaS product that places a UI on our clients' websites. The UI often includes a link back to us. Think Live Chat (it's not, but the idea is similar) where the chat UI has a link "Live Chat by CompanyA". But our solution is not hosted - it's part of our customers' page. Our customers are big, enterprise companies (e.g., American Express). Does this provide any value in terms of inbound linking? Would it introduce Penguin risk to have the product name as an anchor text link (think "Live Chat by CompanyA" with Live Chat as the link)? Are there considerations I should think about? We're updating our standard UI, so it's a good time to make sure our SEO strategies are sound here.

Removal of Bad Links
Before I started doing SEO for the company I am currently working in, they had an Indian company doing loads of spammy SEO work for their site. My question is as follows; should i try to remove the links that were inserted there. I am doing link building now in a natural way, which obviously takes days to get a link - not minutes. I'm worried that the link profile is full of years of spammy links and I can't dilute it as fast as I would like. Here are a few links to different sites that the company created links on: http://youdoze.com/ http://www.video-bookmark.com/ http://mylinkvault.com/ http://www.puplinks.com/ http://huzoo.com/ How do I go about this?

Links from Real Estate Websites Link Page, Do or Don't?
It seems that real estate sites have at times been under heavier scrutiny from the search engines. But real estate agents get networking, which makes acquiring those links a little bit easier. Plus with localization of search, I think real estate sites may give off a good GEO scent. Should SEO's go for links from real estate websites? Does a reciprocal link devalue said links?
