Variations and Rankings

How do search engines view wording variances?
I am trying to target Scottish Wedding Photographer but will google/bing etc be intelligent enough to see plurals, see the word Scotland instead of Scottish, photography instead of photographer?
Also with rankings, I had a secondary phrase there to which I'm ranking sort of page 2-3 at the moment (the site is circa 3 months old) but finding that I'm nowhere with the Scottish phrase, I checked 30 pages of results and show nowhere, is this due to the competition for my phrase?
My site is www.martinwardphotography.com

I think Andy is on the right track, with the caveat that Google needs a little help in the general meaning department. So, one easy way to do that is use Moz's on-page grader for whatever term you've selected... that best describes the page and is hopefully not too difficult and has a little traffic.Just to make sure Google has enough clues as to what this page is about.
Over time, you will find that the page hopefully gives you traffic for all kinds of related terms... not just the one you graded against. Like everyone else, I have pages with top terms that supposedly are good for no estimated traffic, yet dozens of terms contribute hundreds or thousands of visits because they're all in the same general neighborhood.
Plurals and what not don't change the general meaning which you have helped Google fully perceive without getting spammy.

Hi Martin,
I wouldn't get too 'hung up' about plurals etc, they will be taken care of!
Here is what I would do;
Focus on writing and building content about your business, write articles and blog posts in almost story format describing your experiences with being a wedding photographer in Scotland - what will happen is that the keywords will take care of themselves, you will include singular and plural terms by default and you will find that you will rank for terms that you had never even though about!
Sorry if I didn't answer your question directly but what I'm trying to say is focus more on creating excellent and informative content and less about the keywords!
Good luck!
Andy

Keywords ranking on Homepage but are not mentioned.
I was wondering why some of my keywords are ranking in my homepage but are not mentioned even once. Is it maybe because they are semantically related with the keywords targeted on the homepage? What are the reason(s) for this? Thanks for enlightening me with this one.

New Pages - Stable Rankings
Hello, Not a direct question really, just a poll really of your experience - I work with a few companies and have noticed recently that there seems to be an increase in the time it takes to go from a) showing up in the index (quickly within a day or two) to b) getting a stable ranking. I see spikes over the first few weeks (even up to 3 months) before the rankings eventually settle. Have you noticed the same, is it taking longer to achieve a stable ranking, do you work with any sites that get indexed, rank, and stay in the same slot for moderately competitive terms comparing to a year or tow ago? Interested to hear other people's experience and how long we expect to wait for new content to settle Thanks

Do pages with fewer headings rank higher?
I've found several good quality, high ranking pages with excellent content, 500 to 1000 words. These pages are made by people who obviously know what they're doing. These pages only have one headline the h1 at the top of the page. Some of the sites use CSS div boxes and other things to make text look like a heading but do not have h2 or h3 tags or bigger font size. Could it be that a single headline tells Google that this page is about a single topic and that several sub headings muddy the water and so reduce page rank. Do multiple headings or subheadings affect page rank or is it just a personal style choice?

Are blog pages hurting rankings?
Let me begin by saying that I have a Wordpress site with a customized theme. When I view my webpage's crawl diagnostics, it keeps showing a lot of Warnings. There are 89 pages with Too Many On-Page Links and 90 Pages with a missing meta-description tag. The problem is that the pages are listed as follows for both errors: Blog Page 10 Blog Page 11 Blog Page 12 Etc. There are no other pages, just the blog pages (which include about 7 posts/page). How do I eliminate the too many links without deleting them from individual blog posts, and how do I add meta-description tags to blog pages without duplicating the tag for /blog? Thanks! | | | | |

Meta Description Tags and Rankings
Hi there, I have a lot of pages set up on my site but most have no content. If I add the correct meta description tags to those pages, will that help rank for the root domain? I am slowly getting the content added for each page but wanted to see if I could boost rankings in the meantime. http://www.petmedicalcenter.com Example: most of pages under "Services" are blank. Thanks for the help!
