Plural versions of keywords
-
I am a Magician and optimising my site for local seo mainly.
I would imagine this will affect any local business but I woule like some input from the community on how to handle variations of the same keyword.
e.g I am a Magician and I am based in Hampshire
So I have created a page for Hampshire and from previous keyword research optimised it of Magician Hampshire.
However there are many more variations of the keyword.
e.g
Magicians Hampshire, Magicians in Hampshire, Hampshire Magician, Magician in Hampshire, Close up Magicians in Hampshire, Hampshire Magicians, Magicians near Hampshire, Local Hampshire Magicians.
The list goes on but I can not find an answer on wether I should have a separate page/blog post for each of these keywords or include them in the same page.
If I include them in the same page how to not make it spammy
I am sure this is the same for electricians, dentists, hairdressers etc so am hoping there is a common answer to a problem that has been puzzling me for a long time
Many Thanks

Marcus and Peter both gave you great answers. The only thing I can think of that I would add to this would be make sure that when you use Google Webmaster tools you select the country you wish to geo-target. in addition be sure to add your site as www. and non-www. when adding to Google webmaster tools and select the choice you have picked with the 301 redirect your chosen URL
when choosing keywords diverse supply figure out that magic and magician and tricks along with other words that are going to be in bold if you are searching for similar words in Google will keep you from keyword stuffing.
Add quality content with video and images along with at least 1000 words per page to make it so people actually want to be on your site.
Quantity of Structured Citations (IYPs, Data Aggregators)
I have had a tremendous amount of luck utilizing schema it will help you out immensely.
I would utilize this tool if you are using WordPress you can download a plug-in if you're using something else you can simply create the schema inside this site and pasted in to your code.

Hi Roger
I don't think you should pay too much attention to optimising for plural versions of keywords or the sort of variations you list.
For localised SEO the number of pages targeted at a set of keywords will be smaller anyway, so search engines will have less to pick from, meaning that they will spread their net wider to provide a set of results that are relevant for the search entered.
Also, these days, search engines are sophisticated enough to understand the variations largely mean the same thing. The focus of Google when returning their search results is increasingly to understand the searcher's intent, i.e. what the person is looking for and answer their query accordingly.
Google also includes personalisation in its search results, so these days it's likely that someone typing "magician for parties" for example who lives in say, Southampton, will see a set of search results which will include magicians local to them in the Southampton area or nearby.
Google's personalisation of search results is defined through a range of criteria including the IP address of Internet connection where the search is entered, hence Google interprets that if you are searching "magician for parties" then it is your intent that you are looking for a magician who is local to you.
Personalisation may even work for the single word search "magician" but in that case the search results are likely to also contain results from pages from Wikipedia and the Magic Circle. I tried it for where I live in Bournemouth and I get exactly that type of mix of results.
I hope that helps,
Peter -
Hey Roger
This is a fairly common question and as you point out there are various ways that people search for a magician in Hampshire:
- Magicians Hampshire
- Magicians in Hampshire
- Hampshire Magician
- Magician in Hampshire
- Close up Magicians in Hampshire
- Hampshire Magicians
- Magicians near Hampshire
- Local Hampshire Magicians.
Now, it is true that you want the keywords that people use to search on your site but that should never be at the expense of writing good readable English.
So, first up we don't want a separate page for terms that have the same ultimate meaning:
Home Page
- Magicians Hampshire
- Magicians in Hampshire
- Hampshire Magician
- Magician in Hampshire
- Hampshire Magicians
- Magicians near Hampshire
- Local Hampshire Magicians.
Keywords that need their own pages
- Close Up Magician
- Table Magician
- Wedding Magician
Localisation
It is important to consider localisation and know that Google understands the difference between a keyword and a location. They know you are a magician and they know you are in Hampshire. So, you do want to mention this but don't go crazy. Simply, having well optimised page titles and using the location and service where natural should be enough.
Local SEO
Think about local SEO. Get citations from important business sites (Yell, Thompson etc), get citations from any business sources relevant to your location and get listings in any industry specific databases. If these come with links or just mentions of name, address and phone number - it all helps.
Keyword Targeting
You are going after all keywords in your homepage title and then have service pages as well so it may make sense to be a little more structured. Start with the high level keywords like simply magician and then break it down to the categories of magic for your service pages.
Some page titles as an example:
Home:
Roger Lapin - Magician for Hire in HampshireServices:
Close Up Magician in Hampshire | Roger Laplin
Table Magician in Hampshire | Roger Laplin
etcI would likely expand upon the scope of these titles some with mentions of corporate, private etc but the point here is to create a heirarchy to organise your keyword targeting and to get the important elements in the keywords:
<keyword><location><brand></brand></location></keyword>
Note
Everything we are seeing in Search indicates Google is trying to understand the true meaning behind the page and keywords, whilst still important, should not be forced into the page copy just to tick some SEO box. You have a local focus as well so research local SEO, optimise your pages well but don't do anything that reads badly or looks natural and you should start to see some success.
Hope that helps

Cannibalization vs long tail keyword dilemma
Hi all. I have a dilemma that I'm trying to work out a solution to and could use some input. We offer a Foreign Qualification (FQ) service for businesses, and thus "foreign qualification" is a strong keyword for which we currently hold great ranking position for our service page. FQ is different in each state, so we have a series of blog posts focusing on the requirements for each state. "Alabama foreign qualification" is one of many long tail keywords (50 states x various phrasings) we're targeting here. The problem is that it's impossible to write 50 blog posts that are not very similar content, since the process is similar, just not identical, in each state. I'm worried about duplicate content penalties here. I'm thinking that I'd want to create a landing page that serves as a hub for each of these blog posts, perhaps with a reference table for the 50 states too, and set the blog post canonicals to this landing page (thereby pushing all state-focused long tail KWs there). However, I don't want to take away ranking strength of the aforementioned service page for the primary keyword. If I do this, and also link the new landing page to the service page using "foreign qualification" as the anchor text, am I more likely to add or take away from the strength of the service page? Thanks for any and all insight!

How to rank same page for multiple related keywords
We need some of our pages to rank for multiple related keywords. But we cannot optimise one page for multiple keywords which might end up ranking for none of them; at the same time we cannot optimise it for one keyword as we ignore other keywords. I think creating multiple landing pages for very related keywords will confuse users and search engines as well. How to handle this?

Homepage not ranking for main keyword, all other pages ranking slightly for their own keyword phrases.
Dear Mozzers, We have an ecommerce website (www.pashmina-boutique.com), we want to rank the homepage for the keyword "pashmina". Problem is, we are nowhere to be found, not even in the top 100 search results of Google. It is indexed, we have no crawl errors, except that we had some problems with our hosting (503's), the crawler of Google bumped in a few of those. And we are fixing it. Our other pages, e.g. (http://www.pashmina-boutique.com/15-white-pashminas) ranks for "white pashminas" 24th and "white cashmere pashminas" 23rd. We have done no linkbuilding, in Majestic, you can check that. We have been offline for a long time (over 6 months) and about 3 weeks ago, we did a redesign (SEO). We relaunched, everything is looking fine except the homepage isn't ranking for the main keyword. Could you guys check it out? Is it over-optimization? It can't be Penguin, Panda would be a surprise too. Or do we still have to wait for the monthly Panda data-refresh? We are currently busy with this issue, once this is solved - that the homepage is ranking - we will start linkbuilding. Mr.1000

Ranking For Misspelling of Primary Keyword
I have been baffled for the past few months for ranking for the misspelling of our primary keyword BELIZE in the Google U.S. Serps. We are nowhere to be found, but are ranking for the misspelling BELIZ (without the final "e"). We have been online since 1995 on page one everywhere. 11 months ago we did a site redesign changing over to WP as a CMS. We changed all pages from widget-example.html to widget-example and properly 301ed all pages after deleting the old pages. Then we accidentally de-indexed the site for a month due to a robots.txt error. This has been corrected 4 months now. We shared this on the Google Webmaster forums and some kind folks helped with advice - nothing major in our opinion but we implemented most of the tips given. We are doing fine everywhere with all search engines and Google itself in other areas Google.ca Google.bz Google.mx for example. But in our primary market is the U.S. where the majority of our readers are - tourists and retirees looking for our information - we do not exist. The joke is that searching for BELIZ in the U.S. Google Serps has us on Page One. It is a joke that is NOT funny - or maybe some human evaluator made a mistake or is playing a sick joke? We have done a reconsideration request in case there was a manual penalty and we received the no manual penalty form letter. I notice increasingly in Google Live Analytics people typing in our full domain name - I guess out of frustration not getting the site when inputting the primary keyword. I find that I can write a new article and in a couple of weeks it ranks in the top couple pages. Many other pages are found via long-tail only. I find it intriguing that yesterday I wrote a very small article, a press release actually, and today searching for the misspelling BELIZ in the U.S. Google Serp the root domain is ranked #2 and the snippet and image displayed is from this little article which is nothing really great. I am new here. Thanks to anyone who can help. The site: Belize http://www.belize.com

Changing keyword target on home page? Will it work?
I have a site that is in the financial services niche and has around 20 pages talking about different services. I want to change the goal of the site and now just target Insurance. The current home page is a simple introduction to the website, I was going to change this to target the insurance keyword and put around 500 words content on the front page. I was also going to change the Page Title, Description and H1 tags too. My question is will the front page then rank for that keyword once google recrawls the site? Could I damage the PR of the site or any other factors from changing the front page. Here are some stats about the site 11 years old PR 3 Page Mozrank 5.58 Page Moztrust 5.61 Domain Mozrank 2.29 Domain Moztrust 3.17 Thanks for your help guys

What is the best metric to evaluate keyword difficulty?
Which is better seomoz's keyword difficulty tool or wordtracker's KEI index? Or, do you have another metric you utilize when evaluating a large list of keywords?
