Need your professional feedback for a client
-
Hey everyone!
I have a client that got a $500 proposal from some agency that summarized their work as follows. I'm literally copy and pasting this:
- Directory submission - 100/mo
- Targeted keywords - 5
- Blogs writing - 1 per month
- Articles writing - 1 per month
- Blog posting - 10 per month
- Article posting - 10 per month
- Deep linking - 20/month
- Classifieds - 02/month
- Press Release - 01/month
- Yahoo Answer - 02/month
- Local Listing - 01/month
- Comments on blogs - 02/month
- Social bookmarking - 10/month
- Social media optimization - 10/month
- Regional directories submissions - 20/month
- Search engine submissions - 10/month
This is a national company with a strong brand. Nowhere in this "proposal" is any mention of onsite optimization, any real content marketing, infographics, brand mentions, nothing...
I have explained at length that the tasks they are suggesting are a terrible idea, that they will likely get penalized and that most budgets at this range are usually ill advised. The agency has even admitted that they source this overseas to illegitimate firms.
I would love it if I could go to this meeting and have some community feedback as to why this is a bad idea. Please share your experiences, best practices and why most of these tasks are going to get them penalized.
Thanks everyone
Kevin

No problem. Most of what I learned came from bad decisions or (rather less painfully) from other people on here. Happy to share!
Good luck!

Ruben,
Thank you for your response, it certainly solidifies the stance I'm taking with my client. I certainly like to give people the benefit of the doubt as everyone in SEO has their own experience and perspectives. SEO is not black and white but in the case of this proposal, I needed some outside opinions because that price point to any business owner is just too appealing. That is, until their #1 sales channel is gone lol!
Thanks Ruben!

I highly feel as though these tactics are remedies from the past. When it comes to optimizing appearances on the highly searched search engine "Google" you must think nearly 5 steps ahead if not more. Google is constantly changing with the updates from once "Panda and Penguin" to "Hummingbird"
Also the way users search is changing as well. Users are searching the web differently as the generation of searchers are younger and more lazily using "voice search technology" to find the items they are looking for in queries. I expect that the "search option" will become extremely difficult to optimize therefore some in depth SEO tactics would be necessary to succeed long term.
Of course if you are looking for quick results these tactics could maybe prove fortunate depending on your type of niche however I do warn you against these tactics due to the fact that "Google" is spending much more time fighting these tactics making it more than likely "not the way of the future."
I would encourage you to speak with this client about their overall goals and what they are looking to succeed and even go in depth with what their knowledge even is on SEO because based on what their asking it seems "archaic." Today quality is key therefore it really depends on the company you are wanting to perform your SEO techniques. I feel as though in today's evolution of technology as well as "google search" a mere $500 is not enough to get personalized quality links in order to build your reputation on search engines.

The directory submissions jumped out at me as just absurd. I can't imagine there even being 100 directories worth submitting to, and certainly not every month.
Also, this firm used to have an SEO company that outsourced all its blogs and articles like it says your client is about to have happen to him or her. Tell her to look at some ODesk profiles from India and Bangladesh to see if she wants that type of content on her site. When I started here, one of the first things I did was delete every article or post they had written. It was awful. The only good part about the outsourced writing was that it was as poorly written, as it was poorly ranking, so not many people ever read them.
I can't remember if press releases were not going to matter much in the future, or if they were going to get your penalized, but either way, they aren't worth much.
Lastly, 1 local listing a month isn't going to cut it. At the end of a year, your client will have 12 listings. I doubt that will garner much benefit, and they will probably not even be accurate.
Good luck,
Ruben

Thoughts about using Hubspot for my clients...........
I operate an Internet marketing firm in the Midwest US called Saw Web Marketing. I have contractors that work for me that handle design, writing, development, etc when my clients need it. I love the industry but struggle (like everybody else) with all the normal things (managing time and keeping up with reporting, keeping up with the little daily fires, finding time to improve my site and blog and learn new things, networking, social media and on and on..... I have been considering using Hubspot software to simplify some of the things I spend time on, look more polished and professional would of course be a big bonus. I don't know HOW restrictive or powerful their tools are. (I certainly am NOT leaving Moz - Nobody compares to Moz!) ANY thoughts or opinions would be GREATLY appreciated!!! Matthew

SEO Service Needed
Any suggestion about hiring an SEO individual? Primary focus will be proper link/relationship building. What questions would you ask them? What is a fair compensation method? Can the compensation be based on results vs. effort? Thank you, Joe

A suggestion to SEOs that cold call potential clients
Learn some basic salesmanship. Do you realize that business owners are getting 3-4 phone calls and emails a day from other SEOs claiming to be the best? Be polite, ask questions, and don't insult me or yourself through ignorance. Ask questions. You might just discover that we could work together. When you tell me that I'm not ranking for "competitive keywords" it tells me that you don't know what I'm trying to rank for. When you tell me you can get me to the top of Google in 3 months or less, you're still telling me that you don't know my business and what I want from my website. Who said I wanted national ranking anyway? Oh right, not me because you never asked. And if I answer the question "Do you want more business/leads?" with "No." Then politely end the conversation and move on. The rare time that I do get asked about my current efforts, don't insult me by calling me an amateur. I may be one, but talking down to me, or trying to make SEO sound like you're turning lead into gold will get a quick hang up from me. If you want a contract with me, learn to negotiate based on my needs, not your process that you feel married to. There are a lot of business owners out there that would be willing to work with you if you treated you leads with respect rather than iteration 23 of your cold call script. And in response to the person this morning that sent a "free report" of basic SEO fixes for my website, make sure you put that report together using **my website. ** I know you're working from a template, so it should be really easy to remove the info from the wedding company and the lawyer's webpages before you email it to me.

How much margin do you add when estimating client projects?
After you calculate how many hours you need to complete a marketing project for a client, how much extra do you add for project management, communication, all the little things that come up, unexpected problems, client questions, etc.? One resource I read said to add 10% to 20% for project management, then add 25% to 33% more for fluctuations, then state a +/-15% margin of error on the estimate. I was wondering what percentages others use when estimating client projects.

SearchDex for SEO consultation? Price feedback?
I know the JCPenny story from 2011 and read their CEO response to that. I've been pleased with my conversations with them so far and was given a reference that checked out well. Now us. We are a small business and our expertise is in print manufacturing and fulfillment. A portion of our business is running a network of retail websites related to the print business and that network generates six figure revenue, but we rely entirely on our affiliates to promote and drive traffic. I've been learning SEO for about 9 months - primarily just so that I can be informed while managing our direct to consumer initiative. But we don't have the internal expertise to pull off a campaign that is not heavily outsourced so that is why I'm open to talking with SearchDex. Does anyone have any feelings about them one way or another? Does anyone have a recommendation for me to talk to that might be an even better fit for what we want to do?

Questions to help get to know a potential client and see what the possibilities are for there campaign?
OK so I am putting together a list of questions to refer potential clients to. The purpose of these questions is to: 1, Help them understand the difference between "just give us your keywords and we will make you rank" seo and the full range of options that are advocated here on seo moz. .... 2, Get them to see that there are different levels of involvement that are available for different aspects of a campaign and give them ideas and options on how much input they want to have as well as make them see that we can help them with even the stuff they are gonna do themselves or do it for them with there input and permission. Thats where things get a bit confusing I was thinking of having a list of fifty linkbuilding/linkbaiting techniques and check box options beside each one so that they can read a little bit about the particular technique ie forum participation for example and then see how they felt like that related to there industry , wether they would want there staff to do it with some training from us wther they would want us to help them find the right forums and show them how to link back and to which page, or wether they would just want us to handle everything or simply not feel that that was right for there business .. then they would move on to the next thing ie video creation or user generated content and in the end we would have a big list of things to discuss with them and they would have a better understandiing of how much there is to good seo and what might work for them and also how we could help them and how a relationship/ partnership might look I would love some feed back on this is it possible will it help us to build trust with potential clients (which is diffucult for a new biz in this industry) how would you lay it out would it be a usefull resource for other seo companies etc thanks so much seo mozzers this forum is awsome and i know you will steer me in the right direction oh ps this would be something we would keep on our site
