Url for Turkish, Russian, Chinese, Arabic, Vietnamese and Arabic websites
-
Hello !
We gonna release our next website with new amazing languages.
However I was wondering, is it better to keep the url in English or I can translate them in :
- Turkish (should be fine)
- Chinese
- Arabic
- Vietnamese
- Arabic
- Russian
All websites are properly translated but I'm hesitating for the url.
Tks a lot !
-
6 Months later how well does it do ?
-
So what I did is:
Arabic, Turkish, Russian and Vietnamese URL are 100% translated. For chineses I followed my traductor advise and make in in Pinyin which is supposed to be the latin version of the chinese characters.
Let see how does google, Bing & Yandex like our website now !
-
Based on your previous answer I gonna translate them for a while and see how it's going on.
I think it's a good idea to translate all the URL as our main website is in English and all other are translations.
Never easy to go for those kind of projects.
Tks a lot !

The majority of websites I have seen that are for non-Latin language websites, such as Greek and the examples you give, have used URLs using the latin alphabet. Some of the URLs are spelt phonetically, others just use the English equivalent term.
I always like to look at news sites for these regions and see what URL format they use for these. If you look at http://www.newsru.com for Russia, http://alhayat.com/ for Saudi Arabia, you can see the format I mentioned being used.
Now, interestingly, the exception I keep seeing seems to be Wikipedia. Here is their Chinese (simplified) site: http://zh.wikipedia.org/wiki/ - click on a link there and you get Chinese characters in the URL.
But just look what happens when you try and copy-paste the raw URL: http://zh.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E7%89%A9%E7%90%86%E5%AD%A6 - you get this code instead of the characters. To me (albeit as a Westerner) this could cause problems when linking.
Ultimately, looking at just SEO, if you use latin or local characters it won't be the deciding factor for your performance. From a user experience point of view, you could make an argument for both cases. It certainly won't look out of place if you use latin characters in the URL as that is just the way of the web and indeed the majority of the websites in these regions use such a format. I'd have a look at websites in that region that are related to what you're looking at and see what structure they use. They might use English denominated URLs, or they might give latin-spelled, phonetic URLs (Greece is noticeable for doing this - they spell the word in latin characters as how it would be pronounced in Greek, something I like to call Greeklish). Make your decision based on the user experience, but when doing so take heed of the sites already out there and how they're approaching it and you won't go too far wrong.
Hope this helps.

That's also possible.
Check this post: http://uxmag.com/articles/a-url-in-any-language
In any language they will work fine due to Internationalized Resource Identifiers, when you copy paste them they might look weird because of that, but they will still work in a browser.
Edit: offering the URL also translated will be helpful for SEO too. Imagine a user searching for your site in their language, they will probably click on the one that it's written in their language that on the the one that has an English URL.

Hello
Tks for this answer. You're totally right for all latin languages, but what about the other ones ?
-
Definitely go for translating the URLs into their relevant languages. This was discussed in a previous thread which is worth looking at.

Is it worth maintaining multiple international websites
Hi I work for a British company which has two well established websites - a .co.Uk for the UK, and a .com for the US and rest of the world (in language directories). The Uk site is hosted in the Uk, the .com in US. The websites do reasonable well in Google on both sides of the Atlantic. The company is a small but quite well known brand. The company is now thinking of redirecting the .co.Uk to the .com as it would be cheaper to maintain. What would you advise? Thanks.

I read many article which say canonical urls need to be setup for international seo sites. But Im not sure how to setup canonical urls and whether they are the right way to go . i just don't want my content deranked. Now i have setup hreflang properly after asking the moz community itself. So im hoping to get some help with this query too. TIA

GSC is not showing URLs in Regional Language Characters in Search Analytics
Hi, We have a regional language sub-domain, which has the URI in the regional language characters (Hindi). While looking at the Search Analytics data in GSC, we get all the URLs in ASCII format. To resolve this issue, we even encoded the characters in UTF-8, by adding the following in the of the page: However, we are still getting illegible URLs in search console. It would be really great if someone could help me out with this issue. Thanks!

Best practice for Spanish version of English website?
I'm doing an audit for a site that has all of its English pages under the same roof with Spanish pages in Wordpress. It is intended for Chicago, not Mexico. I suspect this is not a good thing, but I only have instinct to rely on here. What is the best practice for having the same website in two languages? http://www.enhancedform.com/ and http://www.enhancedform.com/spanish/

How To Rank A UK Website On Google.com (US)
Hi, I've done some research on this but couldn't find any definitive answer I can trust! We have a client who resides in the UK. They have '.com' domain, hosted on a UK server, using UK spelling. Their business objective for this year is to expand in the USA, including the opening of a warehouse over there. They are wanting us to rank their website on both Google.co.uk and Google.com (North America); besides changing the geolocation settings in GWT's, and building links from .com websites is there anything else we can do to increase their visibility on Google.com? Many thanks in advance, appreciated!

301 juice from my old website to the new one?
Hi there! I am the proud webmaster of two websites, my old one: bioenergeticaconvicen.wordpress.com, currently with decent rankings in Google Spain (as bioenergeticaconvicen.com without the www, if i am not mistaken) on keywords like "Bioenergetica", "bioenergetica barcelona" "formacion en bioenergetica" "bioenergetica transpersonal" -You got the idea. 🙂 and my new one, "www.biomayeutika.org" , wordpress as well, with somehow decent rankings on "centro de bioenergetica" "bioenergetica" etc. It's a health an spiritual business: we dance, breath and mainly just feel our bodies without trying to control anything that happens. Cool 🙂 It's a very local business, aiming mostly for people from Barcelona/Catalonia but also for people from the rest of Spain. a) I guess my main question is just how to pass the old "SEO juice" to the new website. Currently, there's just a link on the old one pointing to the new one. b) Will I somehow merge the rankings of the two? c) How do i do a 301? which pages? With a wordpress plugin? Thanks very much in advance for your help. P.D.: Secondarily, I am open to suggestions on how to improve my SEO strategy (currently, none :)) I am very active in Facebook and have a few good videos and pictures, but I haven't really tried to do good SEO.

Best URL structure for Multinational/Multilingual websites
Hi I am wondering what the best URL format to use is when a website targets several countries, in several languages. (without owning the local domains, only a .com, and ideally to use sub-folders rather than sub-domains.) As an example, to target a hotel in Sweden (Google.se) are there any MUST-HAVE indicators in the URL to target the relevant countries? Such as hotelsite.com**/se/**hotel-name. Would this represent the language? Or is it the location of the product? To clarify a bit, I would like to target around 10 countries, with the product pages each having 2 languages (the local language + english). I'm considering using the following format: hotelsite.com/en/hotel-name (for english) and hotelsite.com/se/hotel-name (for swedish content of that same product) and then using rel=”alternate” hreflang=”se-SV” markup to target the /se/ page for Sweden (Google.se) and rel=”alternate” hreflang=”en” for UK? And to also geotarget those in Webmaster tools using those /se/ folders etc. Would this be sufficient? Or does there need to be an indicator of both the location, AND the language in the URLs? I mean would the URL's need to be hotelsite.com/se/hotel-name/se-SV (for swedish) or can it just be hotelsite.com/se/hotel-name? Any thoughts on best practice would be greatly appreciated.
