Just wanted to leave a quick note saying that SEOmoz has upgraded our Link Directory! You can view a post Cyrus wrote with more information about the directory update and link building via directories at http://www.seomoz.org/blog/seo-link-directory-best-practices

This list includes some paid directories http://www.seomoz.org/directories
However, it looks as though it has not been updated for some time.

Yes, I do track results and in almost all cases there is substantial page rank. When a directory stops ranking, we drop it from the list. We also max out on the listing by adding images, descriptions, product lists, categories, etc. It's very labor intensive. And you need intelligent people doing the work. It is not a rote, mechanical task. You have to be able to describe the company in anything from 160 characters to 500 words. And just cutting and pasting web copy seldom suffices.

Thanks for sharing your experience Daniel.
I am curious. Have you had a chance to look at the directory pages your sites are listed on? It seems often those pages are buried so deep either those pages are not indexed, or those pages lack any page rank.

I have a list of about 12 high quality, high domain authority free directories I use regularly -- supplemented by a few free directories specific to the subject matter. In each case, my team hand crafts detailed entries. There is really no other way.
If competitors have achieved some success with paid directories, I will occasionally duplicate the effort. But I recognize that any boost is likely to be short-lived.
I agree that other strategies can be more effective. But I fall short of disdaining entirely the use of paid directories

What do You think?
It's a bad idea.
You are paying for a link, and the link is of extremely limited value. The reality is that almost no one will ever see or use the link. You are paying purely for whatever value this link offers to boost your site's credibility. The value from the link will range from none, to almost none.
You didn't mention your site, nor is it listed in your profile, so I will have to keep things in general terms. If you publish one good article and earn a link because someone thought your content was valuable, then that will be worth more then a paid link.
If you go to other forums or blogs, offer helpful comments and occasionally link to a relevant, quality article on your site, then that link will offer more value then the link you pay for.
If you can somehow inspire a few people to promote your content on facebook, twitter, or other social sites then that will have real value.
Try to build your site through creating great content, then promoting that content, not through paid directories. Great content can often hold it's value for many years.

I would recommend using the Open Site Explorer (http://www.opensiteexplorer.org/) to view your competitor's websites. Then, sort them by Domain Authority and take a look at the web directories that they've used. In my personal experience, a lot of my competitors use paid web directories and you can figure out which ones are worth trying and which ones aren't. The great thing about the Open Site Explorer is that it'll show you directories that actually have relevance instead of just blindly "googling" for paid directories.

Deciding on directories
Hi guys, I've read lots of different opinions on directories and it seems that directories are still a useful part of an SEO strategy. What I'm struggling to understand however is how to know which directories are worth listing with and which may get the company a slapped wrist from Google. Is there an easy way to know such as its domain authority? Cheers in advance for your help! Leo

Would a Web Cam Cause Link Spam?
We posted a streaming video cam we own of a popular surf break in Capitola (foxxr.com/cam) and it's getting picked up by web cam directories. We have quite a bit of traffic from these cam directories, so we posted a site audit tool in on that page to generate some leads. Our website is about internet marketing. Our concern is about irrelevant link sources appearing spammy to Google. Would a web cam link do more harm than good in this case?

Are directories worth my time?
So I just came across SEOMoz's directory list. And I wanted to ask what people think about directories. I hear for new sites, they are good. For old sites, not so much. We are launching a new project next week. Should I start submitting it to some directories? Look forward to opinions. I really love this forum, everyone is so helpful!

What to look for in paid directories
I was looking through some of the directories in the seomoz directory list and a lot of them are paid directories. What should i be looking for to decide if these directories are worth paying for a link? obviously if the page my link is listed on is in fact indexed by google. What about the following questions: 1. what about page rank of the page that it's on? Does that matter? i've heard that one page rank 5 link carries the weight of hundreds of page rank zero links. Is this true? 2. What does it mean if the page rank is unranked? Is it worth paying for a link if the page is old and is unranked? 3. i read in an SEO forum that there are many other things i should look at in a directory besides page rank. Obviously traffic is one but what about other not so obvious things? 4. How many directory links at one time is too many? how many is too many over a long period of time? THanks in advance for your help Mozzers! Ron10

What Are the Best Practices for Ranking for Synonyms?
This topic has me entirely confused, and unsure if we should keep a website focused on one keyword group, and using synonym contextual links to rank it for other keyword synonyms. We simply have not seen enough data or run enough tests to find our answer, and wanted to reach out to the community to see if anyone has. I have seen Google rank a synonym to my search query on the first page, and is why we are confused. Let's use an example: We'll use "Industry" as the main keyword for our page. "Company" or "Companies" is viewed as a synonym by Google of this keyword. When we query "Industry", "Company" and "Companies" are also found in bold. 1.) Is it best practice to also create a unique page targeting synonyms? Our thinking is that it would be best to try and target exactly what the user is looking for rather than having a synonym to their search for better conversions, but as mentioned above we feel it's best to hit exactly what they query because that's their way of thinking. That they're looking for that exact match. 2.) Have the page "Industry", but do some link building using contextual links "Company" or "Companies" pointing back at our "Industry" page. Would this help rank our "Industry" page for "Company" or "Companies" even though the main page is "Industry"? Just not sure we want to do this as the reasoning explained in #1. Thanks for your help!

Article Submission Best Practices
We are starting an article submission project for our company and had a very basic question. Will submitting the same article to different sites create any potential issues? If the article gets published on various sites, will this be considered duplicate content?

Is this a directory or are they selling links?
I came across a website that at first looks like an informational site, but they also have a directory. On their directory page, it says that if you would like a link placed in our directory email sales@site.com. Do you think Google would consider this a purchased link or a directory link? Can people get away with selling links on your site if you framed it as a "directory"?
