Blog Content
-
I keep reading that a steady stream of new blogs from my site is a great way for getting inbound links to my site.
My question is... Does the content of my blogs have to be relevant to my site? My site is www.marblerenovation.com. If the blog should stay relevant, I am finding it pretty hard to create engaging content around cleaning marble floors.
Also, does anyone know of a good place to find bloggers to help create this content?
Thanks in advance everyone
Dave

Here's the rankings I'd give on relevance:
- "Cleaning Marble Floors" - highly relevant, but probably too restrictive to continually create decent content.
- "Anything Related to Marble Floors" - just about right. Relevance is high in terms of search engines and your readers, and you're not getting too far away from the topic of the business.
- "General Flooring" - OK, but probably too broad if cleaning wood floors is irrelevant to your business.
- "Home Improvement" - Way too broad for the type of site you're running.
As far as finding writers, I'd avoid most of the content that you'll get for under $25 for a blog post. It's going to be poorly researched, and probably poorly written, too. Start with networks like Zerys or Skyword and look for writers with experience with construction/flooring/marble.

Wanted to add that there will be a Mozinar on December 17th called "Content Marketing in Boring Industries" by Ross Hodgens. I would definitely take the time to watch it. Here is the link to sign up. https://www3.gotomeeting.com/register/474514734

Great question, David.
Yes, feed your website's blog with content. We fell off for a long time on ours, but just yesterday I have put into place to have 2-4 articles posted to our blog per month and hired a great freelance writer to help with that. So, pumping more content to our site for Google to index. That is great and all, however, we are taking the approach of 'topical' vs 'keyword' driven articles due to all the latest Google updates. In doing this, we are writing for our viewers or people searching for solutions for the services we provide AND targeting some keywords and phrases along the way. 2 birds with 1 stone so to speak.
Per outsourcing your content, there are a number of sites out there, but like vzPro states, be weary of who you hire. If you are giving them full range to develop the content, then be sure to read through each sentence for grammar or spelling. For example: some writers use "optimisation" vs "optimization" and so on. We have used scripted.com before and it worked really well. I know some people use spinner software and such, but I wouldn't recommend that route at all. It looks spammy even though they promise it isn't.
Per coming up with content, have someone do your research and find all the articles and websites they can about the subjects pertaining to your client's products and services and industry. Then, from there, structure your blog topics, create your titles and begin writing.
vzPro, I like your idea a lot for some cheaper articles from iwriter.com, which you then rewrite and input your own verbiage, experiences and insight! May have to try that tactic

First of all, be careful about what you outsource. I think the last thing you should be outsourcing is your content. It's okay to get content ideas of places but to outsource your content is not the right strategy in my opinion. Secondly, one or two blog posts a month would be enough to help your rankings. Google likes freshness and if you provide it to them they will generally reward you.
Think about your user when it comes to relevance. Your blog posts should have something to do with your industry. If your site is about marble restoration and you start talking about cars then you might have an issue. I read blogs that interest me and I go back to blogs that talk about topics that I am interested in on a regular basis. Being all over the place isn't the best strategy for repeat readers. What that means is that you could write about the history of marble, marble in famous buildings, cleaning and maintenance of marble, marble vs granite, why does marble come in different colors, etc?
Here is a little trick I use to get content for my client sites. I go to iwriter.com and for $3 to $5 I can get a 300 word article on a particular topic. I use the article as a basis for the article I end up writing. You can also use oDesk and for around $25 to $50 you can have people do internet research on everything you ever wanted to know about marble or historic buildings that have marble in them.
You own the business and at the end of the day, no one will know more about your clients (and potential clients) then you. You have to write for the people who will want your services, not for the search engines.

Your content can be about things that your target public would like to read about. For example who reads about "cleaning marble floors" mostly like would like to read about "home improvements".
About outsourcing your blog content creation scripted.com is a good provider.

Images & Duplicate Content Issues
Here's a scenario for you: The site is running WordPress and the images are uploaded to the media section. You can set image attributes there such as the Description & Alt Tag. Let's say you'd like to reuse the same image in two different blog posts. The image keeps the same Description & Alt Tag associated with it in the media section. Would this be considered duplicate content? What would be the best practice in this case to reuse the same image in multiple posts?

Looking for a Proof Reader for a Moz Blog Post..
Hello everybody, After being here for 4 years I decided to write a post for YouMoz. That was about 3 months ago, and while I have read, re-read and proofed this thing a dozen times since, I know my own limits. I honestly want the post to be the best it can be, and while I stand by my article, I know my forte is not with writing. My article is about Beginning SEO and Where to Start, yes it maybe cliche but I find myself answering many of the questions on these QA boards that I address in this article. It would be nice to have a post I could point to when such situations arise. What I'm looking for is one or two persons with a strong knowledge of basic SEO, the ability to understand me (a cluttered mind), and strong grammar skills. Credit will be given to those who want it. The article is basically in what I consider a finished state, I just need to add a compendium video for one of the sections. I have done my own artwork, research, and document design. I just need a keen eye to snuff out those grammar errors I always miss and somebody to tell me if a section doesn't make sense. If you are interested please let me know here, or send me a PM. I would like to have something to review to make my selection so if you're not active here, a link to where you are would be beneficial. I know that might be asking a lot; help and you also get vetted, but the idea is I don't want to send out what I think is a very good article only to see it appear on another site. Thank you, Don P.S. To the Moz staff. Once I make my selection I will mark at least one response as Good so it don't keep annoying you as an un-answered question.

Guest Blogging Question!
Hi, The anchor text link connected with an article used for guest blogging, say the anchor text has 3 words and the link is in the byline, do these 3 words need to be used within the article content? For example if the article is 500 words long and the anchor text from the link is not used at all in the article content will this have a massive negative effect against using the anchor text in the article a few times? Cheers

Help with Content Revamp
Many years ago we wrote about 60 content pages for our surfboard e-commerce website targeting all the top popular keywords. Many of them generic but very keyword focused. We are now revamping our content our our site and want to move away from the generic side of things and actually rewrite all the pages to make them very useful and actually stuff our customers can really use and will find very helpful. I noticed that many times we wrote small pages less than 500 words that target similar keywords around a general theme. In looking at the analytics all the pages are getting a good amount of traffic and ranking well but im wondering would it be ok to focus on a main topic and combine similar pages if they are related? So i can take the say 60 articles and combine it down to say 10 articles and make the articles cover alot more stuff instead of just being small 500 word articles. As an example we have many surfboard models so we wrote an article for -Longboard Surfboards -Funboard Surfboards -Mini Malibu Surfboards -Retro Fish Surfboards -Womens Surfboards -Beginner Surfboards My question is could i weave these all together and write one long guide on say "Choosing The Type of Surboard you need" and cover all the board models in that article and then redirect the old pages to point to that one article. Would i still rank well for all these words Or would this destroy all my current rankings for these words? What is the best approach to rewriting and or combining old content pages that currently rank well but could be combined with others around the same theme to make it more user friendly?

Is it worth to change a blog from a subdomain to subfolder?
We have a blog in a subdomain since some years and we are thinking about moving it to a subfolder, to see if we can boost the main domain (incoming links + fresh content). Could be worth it?

Company Blog Killing our Rankings?
Our product is organic, eco, natural etc. Our blog covers organic, eco, natural culture. Sounds like a winner right? But what if we sold jars and our blog rarely talked about jars because jars are Boring? In webmaster tools, our keyword significance for the word organic is ranked 1st but for the word jars we're ranked 41st . Should i be placing our blog on a subdomain to make sure Google starts placing more emphasis on our jars? ie content on our site rather than content on our blog?

Show all VS show excerpt in a blog post
I saw that you recently changed your blog from "show all" to "show an excerpt" and then "read more", could you explain me the reason? It´s not supossed to be better for the blog readers to see the full posts in the homepage?

Content issue
Hi, Quick question; I have set up a micro site in which i was going to take some of the content from my reviews and recipes my customers have posted and have them placed on my other site. The site i currently have is a large site receiving over 200,00 visitors every day. Will this be affected as duplicate content if i was to do this as i do not want to affect my rankings. Any suggestions what i can do to get round this? Cheers
