Do Nofollows still work for Sculpting?
-
Before answering this, let me explain my goals. I know that Google made a change a couple years ago that discounts the amount of Page Rank passed to dofollow links when there is a nofollow link present on the page.
My goal is to keep the most page rank possible on my home page and pass a specified amount of Page Rank to 7 out of 10 of the pages linked to from my home page. I realize that creating 3 of the outgoing links as no follow links is not going to increase the Page Rank being sent to the other 7 pages.
My question is will my home page be able to retain the Page Rank that would have been used by the three nofollow links or is that Page Rank value just lost when I implement a nofollow?
-
Even then though, why would you want to use a nofollow if every nofollow decreases your page rank value? Even if you are using it in a forum context or for an ad it looks like this would still kill your Page Rank. Would it be better to wrap the links you don't want to pass Page Rank to in an iframe or java script?
-
I agree. I don't use nofollow.
There are a few valid reasons to use it.. on paid ad links, on forums to discourage spammers, and linking to sites that you don't trust or want to support with pagerank flow.
-
Hmm, if the Page Rank dies completely why would any one use a no follow? It seems as if everyone would never want to use a no follow again.
-
The latest from Matt Cutts is not to use No Follow on internal links (which is how it was used for sculpting) but to only use it on external links you don't necessarily trust / want PR flowing to.
-
According to the most recent word that I have read from Google, when you nofollow a link the pagerank that should have flowed into it dies.
So, if you want to preserve the pagerank of your site you should link to those three pages only where necessary and have links on those pages that will allow pagerank to flow back into other pages of your website.
Today the best way to conserve pagerank is to avoid linking to unimportant pages as much as possible - and when you link to them be sure that they link out to important pages.

Are In-Page Tabs still detrimental to SEO?
Hi Mozers, Are in-page tabs still detrimental for SEO? In-page tabs: allow you to alternate between views within the same context, not to navigate to different areas. As in one long HTML page that just looks like it's divided into different pages via tabs that you can click between. Each tab has it's own URL, which I guess is for analytics tracking purposes? https://XXX https://XXX?qt-staff_profile_tabs=1 https://XXX?qt-staff_profile_tabs=2 https://XXX?qt-staff_profile_tabs=3

Still Need to Write Title & Description Tag?
My SEO has advised me that Google has stopped using title and description tags for search results and as such, it is no longer necessary to write specific title and description tags. I see that Yoast seems to pull text to create these tags and sometimes it looks like it reflects the best elements of the content, sometimes it does not. Should I be asking our SEO team to write dedicated title and description tags or is it best practices to leave it to the Yoast plugin? My SEO is of the opinion that writing these tags is not a productive use of time as Google will serve results based on the user inquiry rather than the content on his tags. It sounds logical but it would be reassuring to receive further confirmation of this. Thoughts?"

We are redesigning our existing website. The domain is staying the same, but the sub-structure and page names are changing. Do I still need to do 301s?
We are redesigning our existing website. The domain is staying the same, but the sub-structure and page names are changing. Do I still need to do 301 redirects or will search engines know to remove the old 404 pages from the SERPs? We are redesigning our existing website. The domain is staying the same, but the sub-structure and page names are changing. Do I still need to do 301s?

Recovered from Manual Penalty but rankings still suck
Hi All, We got a penalty Last March 2014 ( Side Wide Link - unnatural links) which we recovered from quickly and this changed to Partial Match penalty (impact links) which we recovered from back in December 2014. Our Site profile has been cleaned up but our rankings still suck for some of our main keywords (+500) . Also our traffic and local rankings still suck in some cases. From an SEO point of view our site is pretty good, we've done everything google has recommended including schema.org, mobile responsive, unique content (which we write regulary) and we only have a few duplicate pages. Our domain authority is better than our competitors but yet our rankings and traffic are still no way as good as theirs. Do anyone know if recovering from an impact links penalty take longer than 4 months . I know that google says than it discounts those links but I get the feeling google may be looking at an old dataset due to not rerunning panda & penguin since our penalty was removed and this may be whats affecting things. Does anyone have any ideas? I am more than happy to post my url if someone fancies taking a quick look ? to see if it's anything obvious ? thanks Pete

Nofollow links & nofollow blog comments - Should I remove
Hello, One of my website has quite a lot (~1000) nofollow blog comment links. Is it worth getting them removed if they are nofollow, could they be dragging the metric of my website down. Does anyone have any experience of this? The site only has about 5 follow links, something seems to be dragging the domain metrics down. Thanks Rob

Robot.txt File Not Appearing, but seems to be working?
Hi Mozzers, I am conducting a site audit for a client, and I am confused with what they are doing with their robot.txt file. It shows in GWT that there is a file and it is blocking about 12K URLs (image attached). It also shows in GWT that the file was downloaded 10 hours ago successfully. However, when I go to the robot.txt file link, the page is blank. Would they be doing something advanced to be blocking URLs to hide it it from users? It appears to correctly be blocking log-ins, but I would like to know for sure that it is working correctly. Any advice on this would be most appreciated. Thanks! Jared ihgNxN7
