Changing to HTTPS and Webmaster Tools
-
I have recently added an SSL certificate to my site robt.info to make a nice and secure bitcoin e-commerce store to sell children's books in.
My question is, even after 301 redirecting everything from http://robt.info to https://robt.info, changing canonicals and all that... do I need to submit the HTTPS version as a new site to Webmaster tools?
OR, can I just leave the HTTP version in there as the only site for the HTTPS??
I guess what I am asking is... does google know that the HTTPS version is now the one true version with out me adding another site in Webmaster tools????
thanks in advance. rob

What is the best way to handle the sitemap for this situation? Do we need separate sitemaps for http and https?

Thanks Martijn... noticable benefits as a result of doing so

Hi Rob,
I would always recommend to also add the HTTPS version to Google Webmaster Tools. I even go as far nowadays to both register the www and non www version of the domain name in Google Webmaster Tools. Mostly I want to be absolutely sure that I see all the data on our own project or for clients.

Is image SEO worth it for e-commerce?
I have been trying to find any case studies of people who have optimized images for SEO for their e-commerce website, but haven't been able to find any case study, indicating obtained results. I am wondering how much increase in Google Image search traffic others have been able to obtain when optimizing their e-commerce images for image SEO. I need this information to justify development resources needed for for example an image sitemap, changes to file names and alt texts, title tags and possibly EXIF data. File size is already ok. Hope someone has experience with this and can share some results. Also, would be great if Moz would do a Whiteboard Friday about this 🙂 (hint!).

Domain and Sub-Domain Question
Hi, My company owns the domains www.NYSTATEMLS.COM and www.MYSTATEMLS.COM both of these sites are already on there way with a lot going on. I did just review video 5 on technical SEO and Rand was talking about how much harder it is to rank two websites. So i'm wondering what could be done in this area? Should something be done? The website nystatemls.com is necessary because it's dedicated to the state of new york & has been around for a long time. mystatemls.com came later because the business grew and we opened up to the national market. Looking for some insight. Thanks so much, Chris Farcher

Internal linking: Global Nav Bar obscuring link authority?
I was watching Rand's whiteboard on how links in the headers/footers can impact SEO: moz.com/blog/links-headers-footers-navigation-impact-seo If I understood correctly: 1) Google will use the first link in the html that it sees for a given page. Additional links will not be considered for passing weight. 2) Text links in body (carry more weight than) > image links > nav links > footer links If we want to use a global nav bar, is there a simple solution for not obscuring the links in the body content? (It seems very awkward to load the header nav last (and bring it up via css after the page loads), and this also goes against Google wanting people to load above-the-fold content quickly.) If I internally link to a page that was not important enough to get a spot in the global nav, but I include this link in the body as a text link (for example, an accessory specific to that item), is this internal link really getting more weight in Google's eyes because it wasn't in the nav? This seems strange to me. Thanks!

Did Google change/eliminate rich snippets for videos?
For example, if you search "Whiteboard Friday" on Google, the only rich snippets are for YouTube videos. None of the rich snippets point to Moz.com directly This contradicts this video from Wistia about video SEO - http://wistia.com/learning/video-seo

Switching to HTTPS YES/NO ?
Yesterday we received an email form GWT that our website does not have a valid SSL certificate. So google is now standard scanning on the https domain. Is this the beginning of an algo update on security, as Matt Cuts said on the SMX "At SMX West Matt Cutts gave the attendees a few tidbits, one of those items was that making your site secure, encrypted, i.e. SSL enabled, is an important trend for 2014. At the end of the session, I asked Matt if this means Google is looking to give sites that enable SSL a ranking boost. Matt Cutts shrugged his shoulders and explained that if it was his choice, he would make it so. But he said, it is far from happening and there are people at Google that do not want this to happen". So should we switch to https with SSL, what are the potential risks with this changes for websites with very good ranking on competitive keywords. Email we received: Site host name, https://www.sum.nl, does not match your SSL certificate Subject Name We have noticed that the host name of your site, https://www.example.nl, does not match any of the "Subject Names" in your SSL certificate, which were: *.example.com example.com As a result, many web browsers will block users from accessing your site, or display a security warning message when your site is accessed. Recommended action To correct this problem, please get a new SSL certificate by a Certificate Authority (CA) with a "Subject Name" or "Subject Alternative DNS Names" that matches your host name. SEO Implications when domain ownership and branding changes
I have a couple questions for the SEOMOZ community - and/or it's leader, Rand, if at all possible 🙂 It is very important for us to have good information. Scenario: Company A: National established leader in a niche product currently receives 49% of their traffic from branded keywords. Company A wants to protect and further grow it's gains that have been made in SEO even after it is acquired by Company B. Company B: Is a much larger company that acquires Company A. 1. What could happen to Google rankings when company A is bought out and Company B changes the registered owner and whois record? Could Google see this as a signal that the ownership has changed and then re-evaluate the ranking of Company A's website? 2. What would most likely happen if company B were to change the branding of Company A's established website? Company A currently receives about half of it's traffic from branded keywords. The acquiring company may want to change some of the SEO titles, ALT-Text, H1 tags, etc to also promote itself on the acquired company's site. Thank you all in advance for your help!
