Question For Those Who Record Their Own Videos
-
Hi,
This is a quick question for those of you that record your own videos. Currently we record videos using a pretty middle of the road sony HD camcorder. We have some good lighting equipment and mic's etc but I always think that it could be a lot better.
I would love to know what kind of recording equipment other use. Someone had said to me to use a DSLR camera with lapel mic which is great and obviously the camera can be used for still photos as well.
I am just interested to know if others use that configuration or if people just use your average HD camcorder with good mics etc.
Thanks

I use a 5D Mk III, three Arri 750 lights and Sennheiser MKE Lav mics for the DistilledLive videos - EXAMPLE
For talking head videos, I don't think there is a massive difference between using a good lav vs using a boom microphone - you can get great quality from both. Similarly, the difference between a DSLR and a good camcorder is relatively marginal as well for simple recordings. The things that really make a difference are firstly understand how to set up your lights, and secondly having some post production skills.
Lighting will be the major factor in determining the quality of your image and you need to find a way to effectively remove shadow while keeping a natural skin tone on your subject. Once you've mastered the lighting, you need to understand basic colour correction and grading - as well as how to mix and master audio tracks. For vocals, you want to cut quite heavily any superfluous frequencies at the top and bottom end that just pick up noise, as well as adding compression and a bit of reverb to bring some life to the sound.

Great question! I've often wondered this myself and am looking forward to see what others are using.
We use a Canon 7D. I've never used a dedicated video camcorder so I'm not sure how it compares, but it definitely does a great job.
For sound, we use a lapel mic that feeds into a Zoom H4n sound recorder. I kind of want to experiment with a directional mic on a boom instead of the lapel mic. Maybe someone out there has some experience with this.
We're still pretty new to video recording and have a lot to learn. I'd recommend checking out Wistia's blog for tips.

YouTube Videos on SERPS
Hi there, One of my clients is asking why there's this big SEO result when https://www.google.es/search?q=botemania+youtube&oq=botemani&aqs=chrome.0.69i59j0j69i61j69i57j0l2.1149j0j4&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8. What kind of search results are thos with this big video first result? Any tips how to achieve this? Something related with the views, video description?. I tested a few other similar queries, even big brands included in the search query and this kind of SEO result does not show up. Any help would be appreciated, thanks! qGwcE

For SEO purposes I want to post the videos on our site with a video transcription either self hosting or through Wistia. Can we also post the same videos on YouTube or is that duplicate content and will we get hurt somehow? Thanks.0 -
Duplicate Video within site
My questions is about duplicate video content. I haven't been able to get a clear understanding from reading the previous threads. We are hosting our videos with Vimeo and embedding into our site. I want to embed them in 2 locations - on our features page with Java (Can be seen here http://simpletexting.com/features/). I also want to embed them in our resource section so that we can link to them directly. I am wondering what the best way to do this for SEO and whether there is a chance that google will penalize us for duplicate content? If leave out the videos on the features page in the XML sitemap, does that address the problem? There are 2 threads I saw on the topic and they have somewhat conflicting opinion from the same person. http://www.seomoz.org/q/duplicate-video-content-question --Duplicate video on the same site is not a problem http://www.seomoz.org/q/duplicate-video-onsite-how-do-you-treat-this-in-sitemap -- Duplicate videos are a problem as google can recognize them as such due to audio wave patterns, video length etc. Thanks

Google Places email question
Hi Mozzers- I just watched the recent Webinar on Google Places optimization. Unfortunately I missed the live broadcast. I have a couple of questions: It was advised to use an email at the domain for claiming the listing. What about a Gmail address with the company's name in the address? I try to use an email at the domain, but sometimes I'm not able to get one setup. One of my clients provides a service where clients don't necessarily have to come to their location. I used the radius option within maps but they are still not coming up in other locations. I should note that they have very good visibility in the metro area where there is more competition. Some of their competition is showing up for lots of locations and they have offices in one location. Tips? Thanks in advance! LHC

Google Places - Category Question
Hi All. Just wanted to double check something with you folks. I've always been under the impression that you should complete the first category option in Places with a default category from Google's list of options, followed by 4 categories of your choice. However, does the 1st category need to be a default option or can it be any one of the 5? Also, do you think anything is gained in the rankings by adding a category of your own choice as the 1st category? There's nothing in the Quality guidelines that suggests the 1st category needs to be a default option, so I thought I'd throw this out there... http://www.google.com/support/places/bin/answer.py?answer=107528

Multiple use of a YouTube video on site
Hi I want to add the same video (that is hosted on YouTube) onto a website on more than one page. Is it ok to use the same same video link in each instance? Are there any benefits in doing this? Are there any detrimental effects from an SEO perspective? Thank you
