Poor Blog and Website DA and links
-
Hi There
We have a mature website and a mature blog with over 500 genuine blogs written on it over 4 years. In terms of actual "people" value it has to be high. We used to get 1000 visitors per day, we now get 300. We still have 850 subscribers so its of a certain size.
However we have been hit by the Penguin/Panda updates and our DA has dropped to what everyone is telling us is too low for a site like this and we still have a google backlink problem, unyet we only have 190 external links that we think are all OK now.
The problem we have is that we seem to have too many links from the blog to the main website with the same anchor text. This has occurred with a blogroll style link to the home page which appears on every post/page of the blog, also I think we have too many anchor same anchor text links to product pages (Motorola ES400) and category pages (Tablet PC).
We're going through changing these now so that we have the right mix but the specific questions I wanted to ask were:
1. Will loads of links with the same anchor text affect us if the blog is counted as internal links. Its on the same "blog" sub-domain as the main website.
2. Will this affect the DA of both sites?
3. Is Wordpress capable of damaging us with all the extra pages it creates automatically.
We've done nothing but genuine content posting here and i'm sure we can get it back but it kind of really demotivates you when 2/3rds of your traffic goes overnight. Many thanks for any help.

You could go about changing some of them but I'd focus on your external links. I'd also take a look at Cyrus Shepard's recent post on keywords and instead of applying your resulting Step 7 list to your keyword choices (although you could very effectively use it as such), use your resulting concepts as a starting place for your back link research, as any sites that were relevant to the concepts you end up with in that list would be ideal back link candidates. Also, keep in mind that in your niche, a high DA isn't a prerequisite for being a link opportunity, so long as it's a quality site with a few quality back links and no/few spammy links.

TY Chris so I would say we have way way more internal links than external and I absolutely appreciate the DA comment. We know we have to get more links from high DA sites but also in a natural way. We aren't afraid of content at all and give a lot out, we just did it all in 1 place on a sub domain!
So Are you saying that the anchor text from blog.domain.com pointing to www.domain.com is not really at the top of the list but probably worth dealing with. Or are you saying that it's probably not worth combing through the blog to correct?

Rugged,
Typically, I wouldn't think that the points you made would have an impact on a site. A "blog" subdomain with posts relevant to the root domian will be seen by google as about the same as a subdirectory so links with anchor text wouldn't be on the top of my list of possible problems.
On the other hand, If you're talking about your own website, I don't seem see all those 190 external links you're talking about--unless you're only talking about the ones coming from the blog. Otherwise, you've only got links coming from one other domain. If that's the case, then your DA wouldn't seem inappropriate and some up and down in DA is typical from one month to another.

DA vs PA when building links
When building links to your site from other sites, what is more important or what weights more heavily? Say a site has a DA of 20 and PA of 34 for that page I want a link from. Say another site has the revese, a DA of 34 and a PA of 20. All things being equal, which site's link to me would be better? The one with a higher DA or the one with a higher PA for the on the specific page I would get a link?

Question about links on blogs
I have a number of blogs, but I'll use this one as an example: http://www.totalpackers.com/. If you look in the left column, we have "friends" links and "more Packers" links. In every case, these were links that we traded or links to our own sites. We get traffic from a number of these sites because of the link exchange, but I'm worried having these is hurting our SEO (as well these sites posting our links). It's crossed my mind that I should remove all these links from our site and ask that our links be removed from their sites. Would that be overreacting? Or is this something I should do? Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks, Monty

New website, small business, niche market --- what's my best link building strategy?
Hi everyone, We are a small company manufacturing a niche product (indoor playground equipment), our new English website (www.funlandiaplaygrounds.com) has just been launched 2 months ago, before that we didn't even have a website in English. As the international sales manager of such a small company, I have to do all the international marketing jobs including SEO, but before this I'm almost a noob on SEO. I've just started the linking building work for our website, after a research on the links of our highest ranked competitors, I have found out that almost ALL of the external links of them come from directories and purchased links, many links are very dubious, please see the open explorer results below: http://www.opensiteexplorer.org/links?page=1&site=www.spiplay.co.uk&sort=page_authority&filter=&source=&target=page&group=1 http://www.opensiteexplorer.org/links?site=www.softplay.com%2F http://www.opensiteexplorer.org/links.html?page=1&site=www.china-cheer.com&sort=page_authority&filter=&source=&target=page&group=1 http://www.opensiteexplorer.org/links?site=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.aileplay.com%2F http://www.opensiteexplorer.org/links?site=internationalplayco.com%2F The search keywords is: indoor playground equipment. According to the latest SEO theory and numerous posts I've read here, links from these directories carry very low value, and solely relying on these links may even cause penalty to the website, but the reality is, all these competitors rank on the top as a result of these "spammy" links. For example this website www.aileplay.com that has the highest PA of 64 and rank on the first page on the search result of indoor playground equipment, has tons of spammy links. That is the situation we are facing now, then my questions is: As a small business in such a niche market, what is our best strategy to rank well in a reasonable time, say 3 months to 6 months? I do not think our competitors are very strong and hard to beat, I believe we will beat them in content creation for sure, but what should we do in link building? should we start to get directory links now, as it obviously works for them? Or should we first create more attractive content, then use these content to get natural links BEFORE we submit for directory, as recommended by most link experts here? If so should we just sit back doing nothing before the link worthy content is created and natural links starts to come in? I highly appreciate any comments! DSG_clan

Are Directory Links a Good Source of Branded Links?
I am trying to increase the number of branded links for a few of my sites since the links are too heavily weighted on anchor text. If so, would you recommend a service like Directory Maximizer?

Page links vs. domain links
Hello all, I am trying to find out how Google weighs page inbound links vs. domain inbound links. I have a domain with about 100,000 inbound links and am adding a new page to my domain which at this time has 0 links. I will be trying to outrank a competitors page that has 6,000 inbound links to the competitors page, but only has 26,000 inbound links to my competitors domain . Is there a formula or a way to know how Google values a page link vs. a domain link?

Additional links + Sinking DA
Hello from a tired SEO I slept badly last night when I discovered last evening our Domain Authority had slumped. I've found that my client is now receiving followed backlinks from links placed in the footers of two good quality/related sites. My question is should I ignore the reduction and keep link building around these - or - should I ask for these links to be removed? Another factor in the mix is we have gone from about 300 links to 600 in a month. I have been working hard on our blog and site content with feeds to technorati. Any advice for a tired novice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Changing Category Names in Wordpress Blog & Inbound Links
I'm working on a wordpress blog, /www.athleticfoodie.com, and I'd like to change the names of the categories so that I include keywords. If I change the current category name of "Healthy Recipes" to "Recipes for Athletes" will I lose the inbound links associated with the category and/or posts? Is there a way to prevent this?
