Content with changing URL and duplicate content
-
Hi everyone,
I have a question regarding content (user reviews), that are changing URL all the time.
We get a lot of reviews from users that have been dining at our partner restaurants, which get posted on our site under (new) “reviews”.
My worry however is that the URL for these reviews is changing all the time. The reason for this is that they start on page 1, and then get pushed down to page 2, and so on when new reviews come in.
http://www.r2n.dk/restaurant-anmeldelser
I’m guessing that this could cause for serious indexing problems? I can see in google that some reviews are indexed multiple times with different URLs, and some are not indexed at all.
We further more have the specific reviews under each restaurant profile. I’m not sure if this could be considered duplicate content?
Maybe we should tell google not to index the “new reviews section” by using robots.txt. We don’t get much traffic on these URLs anyways, and all reviews are still under each restaurant-profile.
Or maybe the canonical tag can be used?
I look forward to your input.
Cheers, Christian

Hi Everett,
Thanks for the reply, and choices.
We just implemented choice #2, so Im pleased that you think it's a good solution.
Thanks a bunch and have a great weekend .
Cheers, Christian

Hello Christian,
You have three choices here, listed in order of preference in my opinion:
#1 View All Canonical - This may not be a good choice for you, however, because there are hundreds of pages of reviews, which may take too long to load on a single page.
#2 Rel Canonical - You are actually already doing this:
#3 Rel Next Prev - This "would" be the ideal fix, but Google doesn't seem to treat it the way they're supposed to.
In summary: I think you're fine the way things are. No need to be concerned here.

Hi Guys,
I would still love an answer to this!?
Have a great day.

Hi Federico, thanks for the reply.
I will defiantly look into this schema.org that you mention.
Regarding the "Changing URL". The URL stays the same, but the content (reviews) keeps changing URL, as more reviews comes in.
Example:
A new review comes in, let's call it “MOZ”. This gets automatically published as newest review, on the first review page:
http://www.r2n.dk/restaurant-anmeldelserAs more new reviews come in, "MOZ" will automatically be "pushed down" to page 2.
http://www.r2n.dk/restaurant-anmeldelser?restaurant=-1&sort=0&page=2As more come in “MOZ” will be pushed to page 3, and so on, and so on.
So the URL for the “MOZ” review will keep changing, and I’m worried that this solution causes indexing problems!?
Regards, Christian

Christian,
I just checked your site and I wasn't able to find those URLs that are constantly changing as you mention.
If you are referring to the restaurant order presented on the page changes, that's nothing to worry about. You are just sorting the restaurants by the last review, right?
I wouldn't recommend noindexing the review section, in fact, I would recommend you further improve it using schema.org markup to tell Google what those "comments" are. You can even use GWT Data Highlighter to markup your data automatically (although only Google will know the markup if you use that method).
About the duplicate content, there's also nothing to worry about, as in the homepage you present only 1 review while in the restaurant page you show all of them, so the content is different.
You should also use schema.org markup to let crawlers know business locations, details, etc and what you are actually listing.
Hope that helps!

Is it better to create more pages of content or expand on current pages of content?
I am assuming that one way of improving the rankings of current pages will be to create more content on the keywords used... should this be an expansion of the content on current pages I am optimising for a keyword or is it better to keep creating new pages and if we are creating new pages is it best to use an extension of the keyword on the new page – for example if we are optimising one page for ‘does voltage optimisation work’ would it then be worth creating a page optimised for ‘does voltage optimisation work in hotels’ for example and so on? I am guessing maybe both might help, this is just a question I have had from one of my clients.

Creating a product per size causing duplicate content problems?
I have an e-commerce site and in order to receive a listing for each size and color in Google Merchant, I've created a new product for each size and color. The problem is that since I did this, the canonical tags aren't correct and there isn't a way to change them manually with the platform I'm on. I feel like this is one of the main reasons I've been dropping in the rankings. Should I delete all duplicate products? The system will take care of canonical tags automatically when creating a new size/color within the system (how it's supposed to be created) but the canonical tags become messy when I duplicate a product and edit the size/color to create a "whole new product". Here is an example of what I'm referring to: http://www.carbonconnection.com/search.php?search_query=nalini+rigel&x=0&y=0 (this problem actually isn't mine, it's a friend's but for the sake of simplicity and gaining a second opinion to be sure before he redoes all of his products, I'm asking as though it were my issue)

Duplicate Content using templates
Hi, Our web site is designed using a template, which means the header and footer is consistent across all pages. Only the body content is unique on each page. Is the google bot able to see that the header and footer content is defined by the common template? Will this have any impact in terms of duplicate content? For example, we have a two line text in the footer that summarize the services we provide. Because the same text is in the footer of all pages, i am concerned about creating duplicate content. Finally, does it make sense to include keywords in header and footer of the template? Will it have any positive or negative SEO impact?

Blog content on homepage - Dupe Content Penalty?
Hi All, I am working on a website which has a blog at domain.com/blog/ On the homepage they are currently looping the latest 5 blog posts in a 'Latest News' tab. Is this therefore classed as dupe content, and would this be penalized by Google? Should I recommend they use the excerpts instead of full articles and simply loop the excerpts on the homepage? The website is built on WordPress. Thanks, Woody

Archetecture to avoid content duplicate
Hi, I have lots of duplicate stuff and I need a better site architecture. http://www.furnacefilterscanada.com/ We are selling furnace filters. All furnace filters are sold in 50 different sizes, each sizes comes in 3 different qualities, Bronze, Silver and Gold. Total: 150 products. Right now I have created many categories and subcategories for furnace filters sizes. When the client pickup is sizes, he will end-up to the products page with 3 different options, Bronze, Silver and Gold. They can then compare the filter a select the one he wants to purchase. The problem is, it is not possible to provide different content for each filters, Gold has a description, Silver has another one and also Bronze. The only text that will change in the descriptions, is the filter size. This makes Duplicates text description. Not good when you what to index your site. The positive things to 150 different products, is the page title. example 16x25x4 furnace filters. Those exacte tem get search in Google. A new site architecture with 3 categories, Gold, Silver and Bronze & 50 variables by products (filters sizes) might not be the best options, because no filter size will be index. Can you please help me to find the best architecture in a SEO point of view? Also what about the top navigation bar menu, what is the best options in using it? Right now it is use for Legal, Contact, Policy and I fill it is a wast, those page only get less then 1% clicks. It might be more convenient to use those for categories for example, what is your recommendations in a SEO point of view? Can I create a information page in the left navigation menu and includ all the standard page, like: Policy, Legal ... If I do, will I get penalize by Google? Thank you for your help. We have puts lots of money in AdWords before, but now the next step is to come home organics. I'm using SEOmoz tools, read there new book, and I want increase traffic. I just need your help. Thank you, BigBlaze
