Should I delete youtube videos when moving to Wistia (or other on-site platform)?
-
One of my new clients recently built a site that has a great potential for ranking product pages with video rich snippets. Each product page has a single video, but they are currently hosted on youtube and embedded using Youtube iframes.
Overall the videos aren't a great fit for Youtube, and we have decided to move the product videos to Wistia. (Much thanks to Phil Nottingham for his answers in this post, and his overall insights on video SEO in general). So what is the best way to make sure we get original credit for the video? I'm planning to take down all the product videos from the Youtube account as soon as we switch the embeds on the site. Is that enough?
-
Second Phil on this one: "You can find that YouTube will outrank your pages, which splits your traffic and view count, thereby damaging your SEO" This is the major issue here.
-
I do agree that video helps with conversion, but I also agree that Youtube isn't the right place for these conversion type videos. Even with a high conversion rate, they aren't being watched enough for it to have an effect in this case. (Each video has <50 views over 3 months)
-
Thanks so much Phil,
I didn't even realize there was an option for "unlisted". Because these are the ever-difficult-to-get-links-to product pages, I am hoping to try to get a few sites that have already embedded the videos to switch to the custom player.

Actually, this isn't quite true Moosa...
Very few people convert from watching YouTube videos and the CTR back to a site in order to make purchases is typically less than 1%.
-
Not true. Just because a video is on YouTube, it doesn't mean it'll rank better than if it is self hosted.
-
No, don't do this, it's a bad idea.
Just because you have content assets doesn't mean you should put them everywhere (it's the same principle as syndicating a blog post). If the content isn't relevant for an audience on YouTube, which product/sales focused videos typically aren't, then they shouldn't be on there. Content should be created for the YouTube channel, not just put on there because you have it.
Additionally, self hosting your content and putting it on YouTube can have negative technical impacts. You can find that YouTube will outrank your pages, which splits your traffic and view count, thereby damaging your SEO; you're also failing to optimise for YouTube in this way, since you won't be driving any YouTube views through the video embeds.
For product videos, the goal is never to get as many people to see them as possible, but rather to drive as many sales as possible, which means you need to get people to view the content in a context where they can make a purchase (not on YouTube, since there's no "buy" button).

Hey Sirmontegu,
Basically, I'd recommend you just mark the YouTube videos as unlisted (which is like putting a noindex tag on your videos) so that user experience isn't damaged for anyone who has already linked to the videos and you'll retain the view count on your channel (good for social proof) but will also ensure your YouTube videos don't outrank the canonical version on your site, as well as ensuring your more YouTube friendly content is prominent on your channel.
Then all you need to do is ensure you're submitted a video sitemap (with the Wistia toolset) and you should get the videos indexed on your site.
Cheers,
Phil.

I guess Eric is right just let them be on youtube and also make sure they are ranking high when someone search for it on youtube.
The percentage of people who convert after watching a video online (big number watch videos on youtube) so this is good for your conversions as well.
Hope this helps!
-
I would keep them on YouTube. Since YouTube is owned by Google, they rank their videos higher on Google higher searches so you don't want to lose that. I agree with Eric. If anything, keep them in both places.
-
I would keep the videos on YouTube. In fact, it's usually recommended that you post them on multiple video sites for additional distribution. Even though you're not necessarily going to link to the YouTube videos from your site, you'll often get people who will view them there. And you can't ignore YouTube since it does have the most traffic.

Product Videos and SEO
We sell high end products and we try to educate the consumer as much as possible. Since the attention span is short, we try and break up the features/functions into 5-6 videos. We post everything to Youtube and we have been adding it to our blog as well. I am currently tasked with rebuilding our blog from the ground up. This means getting rid of all the thin content, updating content, etc. We have many videos up there and Just trying to figure out what the best practice should be. The blog is wordpress based and I have the videos now set up in a category structure. Should I just add each video as a video custom post type? Should I have each video posted with a transcript? Or should I post each video with sub background text of the video? We have about 120 videos in all and adding more, but making them longer to reduce the amount of videos per product going forward. Thank you.

When do I use no-follow links to interlink on my own site?
Hi Mozzers, When would I ever want to use no-follow links when interlinking pages on my site? The more authority being passed around, the better, right? Does it save or conserve page rank / authority from being transferred to pages you don't necessarily need it on? Thanks!

Hosting Video both on YouTube AND Independently on Site?
I've got a pretty good handle on the pros / cons of hosting on videos on a free service like YouTube vs. hosting them independently with something like Wistia. But one question I've never heard answered is "Why not host the same video both ways?" Why wouldn't I publish a video to YouTube (to get the exposure and better chance to rank) and then also host the same video independently on my site with Wistia (to get a second listing in the SERPs, as well as a thumbnail that links to my site)? Is this seen as a spammy practice? Duplicate content? Would love to hear your thoughts on this as it's something that seems to potentially be a win-win, but haven't heard it discussed. Thanks!

What is the best way to include video transcripts on your pages?
I just posted a question as a comment on this blog post (http://www.audiotranscription.org/6-reasons-you-need-to-have-your-sites-videos-transcribed/comment-page-1/#comment-4311) and realized I probably should have asked the question here because it is really SEO-related. We are in the process of transcribing all of our videos. Can you someone recommend how best to post the transcript file on our product pages? For example, here's a product page that has a video review on it: http://www.ccisolutions.com/StoreFront/product/behringer-x32-digital-mixing-system. Would it be best to post a link to the transcript file or insert the iframe transcript file from DotSub.com (in that case wouldn't DotSub.com be getting credit for our original content?) or, should we just let our captions on the YouTube stream from there (which is what's happening right now)? Will Google still crawl the transcript if the only place it's available is on YouTube? If so, doesn't YouTube get credited for that content, and not our site? Even if we do post a trascript on the page, if it appeared at YouTube first, wouldn't YouTube get credit for the original version? We want credit for that content...just not sure how to get it? I understand that moving to Wistia.com would probably solve most of these issues. What I'm trying to figure out is how best to handle new transcripts for existing videos over at YouTube?

Video Transcription
Does anyone have any best practices for video transcription strategy. We download the file at youtube, edit it, remove the time and upload it again, where youtube adds the time according to the edited file I've seen some transcripts under the video section that have not time on that? Does anyone know how that's done? I've also seen keywords added into those? Any recommendations around that. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Finding Pages with Youtube Embedded Videos in Google SERP
I'm trying to figure out a process to find specific youtube embed videos using Google search. But a lot of sites are not being returned. For example, I know that the following video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1MnylRaQC3w) is linked to and embedded on http://gizmodo.com/5898438/watch-how-fender-builds-its-iconic-stratocasters However, I can't figure out a set of search terms to find that in Google. Searching for (1MnylRaQC3w Gizmodo) doesn't return the right page in the results. I'd like to figure this out so I could see everywhere a certain youtube video has been embedded.

URL redirect to a YouTube Channel?
Hey all, We recently ran a video content contest on a micro site and we generated some links for the URL. In December we are planning on doing a redirect of the domain to our YouTube channel where all of the videos hosted. My question is how much SEO benefit will there be by redirecting to our YouTube channel vs redirecting to a single video from the contest. Does the strength of the channel as whole affect the videos in that channels ability to rank on YouTube and in SERPs? The other option is to just redirect the URL to our product page on our main website, but to me that doesn't seem like it would provide the best user experience 🙂 If anyone has experience with this kind of an issue I'd appreciate your feedback. Thanks!
