My advice is to purchase a domain you can/will build a brand around. Stick to the brand URL/domain as exact name match domains have been flagged by Google for top rankings. Optimize the site for both targeted traffic and local and national/international search traffic. I'm a big believer now of brand domains, and developing links to those sites with links that reflect, brand mentions, KW mentions for correlation, social mentions and inbound related marketing content development to strengthen the domain's total overall market presence.
Another reason to keep the domain 'brand related' is about the UI/UX for recalling it. If it's some crazy long typed domain name with KW's and brand mentions, it becomes tedious to remember and type out Using the brand name as the focus and URL will keep it straight to the point for the user and marketing behind it. NOTE: Make sure to research out the social profiles of any URL you are looking at, to build up around as you want to ensure you can lock them all up prior to purchasing anything
Either way, your best bet with a completely new domain will be to focus on developing out a local SEO strategy and supporting that with targeted content and social media profiles. This way, when you are ready to gain and target a larger audience (national?), you have the backbone profile on the site to reinforce the effort.
Hope some of that helps

I agree with Erwan. There is of course another option which I think would get you the most results and that would be combining the brand with your keywords. I don't know if that is a possibility, but you could try to figure something out. If the company is focused on makeup let's say, then what if the brand was called "themakeupcompany", "perfect makeup".. you get the idea. Again, I do not know about your possibilities and my examples were written in about 2 seconds so I don't expect them to work, I just used them to make my point.

1/ Short term answer : EMD.
2/ Long term answer : forenamesurname.com
I vote for 1/ if :
-
You have a limited budget / a limited time to rank.
-
Your client is not able to help you to produce great content.
I vote for 2/ if your client is patient and willing to build his brand.
According to MOZ ranking factors, EMS is 7 or 8% advantage and I read that partial EMD is useless.
IMO, weddingmakeupbyforename.com is too long anyway.

Just don't make it exact match. I like the name you picked because it includes your keywords and the brand name. The only suggestion I want to make is that I would go more general. Include just your primary keyword which is "wedding. What about weddingneeds.com. I would lose the word makeup. Do you specialize more in weddings or makeup? Just include that primary keyword and that will create a great base for your clients Seo needs.

Thanks for your reply thats helpful.
Could a compromise be:
Do you think that helps a bit with Google but also not too bad for the users trying to find a site?
Thank you

Hi,
it really does make a difference if you have keywords in the domain name. The problem, however, is not that simple. You have to take into account the users that need the website. How easy is it for them to access the page? You do not want to only stuff keywords in your domain name and let the users satisfaction and ease of access apart. This would not be a good marketing decision.
That being said, my advice would be to try to find out the best way to please the users and Google as well. Per general, I would think about the users more, since Google is trying to update its algorithm in order to please the users.

Url too long
Hi we have a wordpress website for Office Furniture Our domain name does not have office furniture in it. So we went from having domain.com/shop/category/second-sub-cat to domain.com/office-furniture/category/second-category However we now have 509 products flagged with too long urls I am wondering whether we should change back : For example domain.com/office-furniture/office-corner-desks/beech-corner-desks Should I go back to domain.com/shop/office-corner-desks/beech-corner-desks Or am I going to confuse matters even more? I should say this only affects categories as the products themselves are /shop/product I am just concerned that changing the re-direct in place originally will just make matters worse and confuse things - would I get more value changing back? Or should I stick with it and just try to shorten urls individually by product titles etc

Multi Keyword URL Ranking at Number 1
Here is part of a URL that takes the local number 1 spot for "implant dentist glasgow" [website] /implant-dentistry-glasgow-scotland/implant-dentistry-glasgow-scotland.html The first /implant-dentistry-glasgow-scotland/ directory or page is protected and presumably just exists for ranking reasons. I am tempted to copy that URL on a client's implant page to compete for the keyword (I believe I have better content). Given that it works well for the other site, can you think of any reason that would that be a bad idea? Thanks very much.

Tips on URL structure for a site re-design
Wanted to know what you would do with regards to urls – in an ideal world how would you structure them? Keen to know as me and dave are soon to have a meeting about this and were wondering about changing them from the current – http://www.looking4parking.com/airport/gatwick to something like - www.looking4parking.com/gatwick-airport-parking We will soon have pages for the specific parking types that will be a lot more engaging to users with some really useful content on benefits, features, how a certain type of parking works, images, video etc. Currently going to a type of parking, such as meet and greet just brings up a dropdown modal – I was thinking of having the url structure looking like this – www.looking4parking.com/gatwick-airport-meet-and-greet-parking www.looking4parking.com/gatwick-airport-on-site-parking www.looking4parking.com/gatwick-airport-park-and-ride We will then have specific pages for each parking product – in which this product will have unique content built around it – each will have an overview of the product, benefits, features, reviews, images, directions to the car park, find your route and eventually a video on each product So for example we currently have the product “Jet Parks 2” at Manchester airport – the current url is - http://www.looking4parking.com/airport/manchester/park-and-ride/jetparks-2 I would like to change this now we have the opportunity to refresh the whole system, to something along the lines of **domain/location/product title - **www.looking4parking.com/manchester-airport-parking/jetparks-2 or as we have some similar products at certain airports (mainly where the airport has multiple terminals) we would just change it to the following - www.looking4parking.com/manchester-airport-parking/jetparks-3 What are peoples thoughts/opinions on the above?

Big problem with my new crawl report
I am owner of small opencart online store. I installed http://www.opencart.com/index.php?route=extension/extension/info&extension_id=6182&filter_search=seo. Today my new crawl report is awful. The number of errors is up by 520 (30 before), up with 1000 (120 before), notices up with 8000 (1000 before). I noticed that the problem is with search. There is a lot duplicate content in search only. What to do ?

Hello, Currently, I am parsing article base on article ID on URL request. For example:

To go to the content of article **What is the visa on arrival? How to get it? **I am using URL like that http://www.vietnamvisacorp.com/news/what-is-the-visa-on-arrival--how-to-get-it--245.html and base on ID 245 to get this page content.
But, now I want to optimize this URL to http://www.vietnamvisacorp.com/news/what-is-the-visa-on-arrival--how-to-get-it.html. Then I got a problem: How to get an article without ID? Thanks,0 -
