Keyword rich internal linking - problem?
-
Had an interesting situation today..
We write daily news articles on our site. In each article we link out to two sources that we are writing about (credible sources) and we do one or two internal links.
For example..
'Today McDonald's have announced that they are purchasing more blue widgets in order to increase their opportunity to appeal to a larger market.'
So in that sentence you can see one outbound link and one inbound to blue widgets on our site.
I got an email today from a large company who we have written an article about in the industry and they have asked me to remove the link to their site..
I actually asked them why and this was their response.
'We're concerned because of the number of keyword-rich internal links in the article, and are worried that being included alongside them might be misinterpreted by Google as an artificial link.'
Fristly, do they really have anything to be worried about?.. but more importantly, with our internal linking, do we have anything to be worried about?.

On the subject of articles and pages that list headings of articles.. any idea on minimum text needed before something is regarded as 'thin content'?
I have a site with pages like that and was producing to thirty to forty pages per week (news items). I had thousands of those pages and would delete old ones about once a year. That site got hit in one of the first Pandas. I noindexed those pages right away and the site recovered within a few weeks. Now I continue doing the same. The anchor text is two to six words that are perfectly descriptive of the content or something snarky. Since the pages are not indexed I don't think that they are a problem.
I have had some slight panda problems that I think was caused by some pages that I added to a site almost ten years ago. It was a lot of photos with two to three sentence descriptions. So, I noindexed them and will beef all of them up to a couple hundred words and the really good ones up to 1000 word articles with several photos. But, I think that a couple hundred words would be adequate - but nobody knows for sure.

Thanks EGOL - You have been answering my questions since 2006 on SEOchat so appreciate you know your stuff on articles/blogs etc.
Nobody is paying us for links, there is no dodgy reciprocal or paid arrangement at all. We are writing news articles and linking out to relevant sources for that article (about 50% relevant to our industry, but 100% related to the article)
I think your point about the 2 and 2 is a valid point. Its a long job as our articles go back to 2007

This sounds kinda systematic. If anybody is payin' you then you could have a problem. If nobody is payin or doing any favors back then just stop linking to these other sites. You don't have to. Or, if you worry about it then nofollow the links.

Did you write the article without them asking you or paying you? If that is the case then just take the link down.
If you are publishing articles for others with links to them on request, for a fee, or as an article exchange then there could be a problem.
Fristly, do they really have anything to be worried about?..
If nobody is payin' or doin' favors then there is probably not a problem. But get out of the habit of linking to two internal and two external...two internal and two external...two internal and two external...two internal and two external...two internal and two external...two internal and two external...
See what it looks like?
but more importantly, with our internal linking, do we have anything to be worried about?.
Look at wikipedia. On my site, I do the same thing. If I have relevant article about widgets I link to it in the text of the article.

Whats the best practice for internal links?
Hi our site is set up typically for a key product (money page) with 6 to 12 cluster pages, with a few more associated blog pages. If for example the key product was "funeral plans" what percentage of the internal anchor text links should be an exact match? Will the prominence of those links eg higher up the page have an impact on the amount of juice flowing? And do links in buttons count in the same way as on page anchor text eg "compare funeral plans"? Many thanks

Keyword explorer
Hello, I was trying the keyword explore and got some questions : I first used it with all the search terms for the keyword "italy bike tours" and came across terms like this one "tuscany bike tours florence italy" Does it mean I have to include this exact expression in my content or do I just need to include somewhere in my content the words tuscany and florence ? Then I did the same search but this time with closely related keywords and the keyword explorer give me the word "pasticceria" or "tirrenia" are being closely related to the keyword italy bike ... How does the keyword explorer find those words because I don't see how those can be related... If someone could explain that would be awesome. Thank you,

Does Navigation Bar have an effect on the link juice and the number of internal links?
Hi Moz community, I am getting the "Avoid Too Many Internal Links" error from Moz for most of my pages and Google declared the max number as 100 internal links. However, most of my pages can't have internal links less than 100, since it is a commercial website and there are many categories that I have to show to my visitors by using the drop down navigation bar. Without counting the links in the navigation bar, the number of internal links is below 100. I am wondering if the navigation bar links affect the link juice and counted as internal links by Google. The Same question also applies to the links in the footer. Additionally, how about the products? I have hundreds of products in the category pages and even though I use pagination I still have many links in the category pages (probably more than 100 without even counting the navigation bar links). Does Google count the product links as internal links and how about the effect on the link juice? Here is the website if you want to take a look: http://www.goldstore.com.tr Thank you for your answers.

If I nofollow outbound external links to minimize link juice loss > is it a good/bad thing?
OK, imagine you have a blog, and you want to make each blog post authoritative so you link out to authority relevant websites for reference. In this case it is two external links per blog post, one to an authority website for reference and one to flickr for photo credit. And one internal link to another part of the website like the buy-now page or a related internal blog post. Now tell me if this is a good or bad idea. What if you nofollow the external links and leave the internal link untouched so all internal links are dofollow. The thinking is this minimizes loss of link juice from external links and keeps it flowing through internal links to pages within the website. Would it be a good idea to lay off the nofollow tag and leave all as do follow? or would this be a good way to link out to authority sites but keep the link juice internal? Your thoughts are welcome. Thanks.

301 Externally Linked, But Non-Producing Pages, To Productive Pages Needing Links?
I'm working on a site that has some non-productive pages without much of an upside potential, but that are linked-to externally. The site also has some productive pages, light in external links, in a somewhat related topic. What do you think of 301ing the non-productive pages with links to the productive pages without links in order to give them more external link love? Would it make much of a difference? Thanks... Fixed "lower-case/mixed-case" Internal Links causing duplicate- Now What?
Hi, So after a site re-launch, Moz crawled it and reported over 150 duplicate content errors. It was determined that it was because of incorrect uses of capitalization in internal links. Using screaming frog, I found all (500+) internal links and fixed them to match the actual URL. Now the site is100% consistent across the board as best I can tell. I am unsure what to do next though. We launched the site with all the internal link errors, and now many of the pages that are indexed and ranked are with the incorrect URL form. Some have said to use a canonical tag. But how can I use a canonical tag on a page doesn't even exist? Same thing with 301. Can I redirect /examplepage to /ExamplePage if only /ExamplePage actually exists? I would really appreciate some advice on what to do. After I fixed the internal links, I waited a week and Moz crawled the site again and reported all the same errors, and then even more. All capitalization. Seems like it's a mess. After I did another Screaming Frog crawl, it showed no duplicates, so I know I was successful in fixing the internals. Help!!

What To Do With Too Many Links?
We have four pages that have over 100 links (danger, danger from what I gather), but they're not spammy footer links. They are FAQ videos for our four main areas of practice. Does that make a difference? If not, should I just take half the questions on each page and make four additional pages? That strikes me as a worse UX, but I don't want to get penalized either. Thanks, Ruben
