What are the Best On-Site SEO Practices before an E-commerce Site Goes Live?
-
Hello,
I’m working on a client’s E-commerce website.
This website is not live yet. Before the site goes live, I am curious to know what the best practices of On-site SEO are.
Please let me know from which factor should I start analyze?
Thanks.

All of these are great answers. Below are a few more resources you might want to check out prior to launching:
The 2014 SEO Checklist by ClickMinded: I can't endorse 100% of everything on there (we all have our own opinions, tools and methods) but it is a fairly comprehensive checklist.
The 2013 SEO Ranking Factors Study by Moz: This is from last year, but still relevant and mostly accurate.
The Periodic Table of SEO Success Factors by SEL: I find this visual format very confusing and convoluted, but others find it very logical and easy to interpret. I think it depends on the person. I'm more data-oriented rather than visually oriented. Either way it's a good resource.
The biggest mistakes I see on eCommerce sites are as follows:
- Non-Unique Product Copy (e.g. Content taken from manufacturer or distributor descriptions, or product feeds)
- Internal Duplicate Product Copy (e.g. product variants with their own canonical URLs using the same copy, non-canonical URLs created by query strings, from products in multiple categories, etc...)
- Thin or Useless Product Copy
- Indexable URLs for Filtered/Faceted/Layered navigation
- Indexable URLs for internal search results
- Indexable shopping cart URLs
Good luck!

Simply put, make sure you have no duplicate content, including:
Page titles
Meta Descriptions
On Page content
Multiple URL's with the same content (often a huge issue with CMS or cart systems)Screaming Frog seo spider is a good resource to use, and its free up to a number of URL's.
Don't forget to check your robots.txt rules, to filter out anything you dont want showing up. If you are using a CMS, check that the home page isnt being rendered with multiple URL's such as:
YOURDOMAIN.com and YOURDOMAIN.com/index.php. This can be corrected with a 301, unless you are using VirtueMart, which needs the index.php. (there is a custom fix we came up for this to not display) -
I have compiled a list of things that are needed before you launch. Run the Moz campaign mode and see if there are any errors do this by allowing Roger bot to index but not Google - http://moz.com/learn/seo/robotstxt
Allow a specific web crawler to visit a specific web page - Disallow: /no-bots/block-all-bots-except-rogerbot-page.html User-agent: rogerbot Allow: /no-bots/block-all-bots-except-rogerbot-page.html and http://moz.com/tools/crawl-test
Then use https://moz.com/researchtools/on-page-grader and https://marketing.grader.com/
I would buy screaming frog SEO spider to index your website if over 500 pages and be certain there is no possible duplicate content and a simulated Google bot can index the site properly. This is most important. You can also Check the Way, Google would be your website through the eyes of Google bot using http://feedthebot.com or http://www.screamingfrog.co.uk/seo-spider/ . This will show you any errors when you run it through all the tools available.
Well this may sound very obvious, make sure no index no follow is in place right now if you do not want to go live & you are using a staging server. If you are using a staging server make sure to 301 redirect that link to your site use a rel canonical link to point to your new domain's site pages that were on the former staging server for instance. If you have an alias/staging server named example.staging–server.com who would want to follow the example below on the staging server to make sure there is no duplicate content. This is rare but does happen - https://example.staging-server.com/shoes/hightops/
You can use this if running Magento - https://yoast.com/tools/magento/canonical/. Everything else is listed below:

Best Way to Handle Multi-Language Sites
In the last year we've made a few significant changes to the structure of our site - namely adding translations for a few languages. We have historically been gaining in organic search by about 10% each month, but in the last two months we've leveled out and seen a slight dip. I am wondering if this has something to do with the addition of the second language, and namely if there's a chance we've been penalized due to duplicate content. We have almost all pages / content on the site translated by a translator, but the way the development works the site will grab the english version if a translation hasn't been added - potentially adding some duplicate content? The URL structure remains the same, other than the addiion of the language - site.com/our-tour vs site.com/de/our-tour We also haven't translated the tour name itself, so that remains the same. Just wondering if anyone has any feedback on best practices here or things I should be looking out for. Thanks in Advance.

When I changes Template, why traffic goes down?
I've noticed that when I change my blog's template the traffic goes down dramatically, about of 40% decrease. I know that new themes can have some problems but I have tried this with 2 different themes. First try was with genesis framework(Paid one) and just in one day traffic went down and when I reverted the old theme, the traffic became normal. Should I wait for 1 week to see what happens? What could be the potential reason of this?

Best practice for a website where the publications (catalogues) expire frequently
Hi guys, Hope to find some smart SEOs around here and where I can to contribute to the community! I wanted to share an issue we are having with our website, which is focused on the promotional flyers of the supermarket chains. These are often valid for a short period of time and then expire. So it makes no sense to keep them but also, if we delete them, that would create a lot of 404s or something. So how do you think it is the best way to go around this problem? should we delete them? or when deleted to redirect the dead pages to the homepage? or keep them in an archive live site.com/brand/archive/ ? Thank you so much for any opinions, much appreciated! Best

What is the best way to optimise a site that wants to target one service in multiple locations?
Hello! I would like to get some opinions about the best way to optimise a site/pages/URL's for a client that offers one service in multiple locations. The client has done work in various areas of the UK and wants to be found for these locations. They don't have addresses in these locations. What would be the best way to set up the pages/URLs for each location? Is there any reason why I can't have, for example, a main Portfolio page which has content about the service and a link to each portfolio in the different locations, e.g. /portfolio/london, /portfolio/hampstead, portfolio/kensington. Any advice would be very much appreciated. Thanks Kerry

E-commerce store having same content different language pages
Hello, I have an e-commerce store operating on PrestaShop. I have four languages Fr, De, En and Nl. The url for each page changes like Example.com/en/product1 Example.com/fr/Product1 Example.com/de/product1 Example.com/nl/Product1 All these pages have same content about product1 but translated in respective language. Is it considered as duplicate content? Should I suppose to write different content for each page?

When it comes to duplicate page content how do I deal with correcting it. Its a dynamic e commerce site.
I am under the impression that with ecommerce sites this happens often and that there's a plug in or just simply not worry about it since queries will often find similar conent.

My site has been dropping, not sure why!
My site has been dropping in the rankings, not sure - my metrics seem better than my competitors. Historically I have been a very stable #2 for my main term, but now it's down to 7! According to SEO Moz, my domain authority is 32, while my better performing competitors are are 26, 11, and 1! Have more links than they do. Trying to think it through, not sure what is happening. My home page bounces at a low 20%-ish, other Google Analytics are good. I have a company Facebook account, occasionally upload YouTube vids, do online press releases, etc. I do have to target several metros scattered across the state, while my competitors usually focus on one major metro. I do have some SEO Moz errors, which focus on dup content due to our web editor's naming system. An example would be domain.com/keyword-keyword-i-14 vs. domain/differnet keyword-different better keyword-i-14. 14 would be the actual page number. Our system lets me change the page title keywords, as I've added new links and pages over the years there are some dupes. The only major change is I've added a password protected section for sales rep materials. The hosting/web guru firm we use has assured me Google doesn't see pages behind the password portection. Not sure if Google is testing a new SERP formula. All social media or non-website results seem to have dropped out of search for my terms. Just local business sites like mine and some directory sites remain. Any advice or private consult would be greatly appreciated as I am a ... self taught 'OneManBand' for high tech marketing in our company. Thanks
