Discrepancy between FB PPC and Google Analytics
-
This question was answered in 2011 here: http://moz.com/community/q/facebook-ppc-number-of-clicks-according-to-fb-different-than-visits-in-analytics.
Wanted to post it to the community to see if anyone had any new thoughts in the last 3 years.
I have been running campaigns on Facebook and seeing dramatic discrepancies between Facebook and GA's numbers. For example, I ran a Facebook ad campaign for a chiropractor where FB shows 35 clicks to the website, but GA only shows 2!
An attorney ran a Facbook promotion, got 4 clients who actually filled out a questionnaire online, but GA only showed 2 visitors exiting off the form completion page.
Is this because the users did not have JS/cookies enabled? Something else?
What is the recommended work around? Tracking URL?

The main discrepancy is going to still be the one specified in 2011: The attribution method of facebook & google tracking clicks.
FB is going to use first click attribution, GA is going to use last click attribution. Have you looked at the mutli-channel funnel reports & the first click attribution?
Facebook reports on ad clicks so depending upon the type of ad being run, you could just see your ad being clicked on for many purposes. Google has a specific definition for when a session starts. When you say Google only shows 2 users - do you mean in total or from Facebook?
Side note: Using tracking codes in sponsored posts doesn't actually show facebook / cpc being the referring resource because these show up as organic traffic in 3rd party website tracking cookies.

People could possibly have their browsers set to "Do Not Track" which would throw it off.
Also, their are tons of plugins out there for Firefox, Chrome and IE which specifically act to block tracking. Ghostery comes to mind, Ad Blocker Plus, etc. Mobile browsers also can add plugins like this.
The best solution is to have multiple tracking codes/devices in place, then take all of the data together over the same period of time and analyze the numbers. Don't forget your own server logs either! They are a valuable source of data. You're going to have to bring in multiple data sources and develop a range of values, similar to confidence intervals. Check: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Confidence_interval to see what I am getting at. So you would say something like, "with 95% confidence, our real traffic lies between 1,000 to 1,400 unique visitors per day" or whatever the number is. Of course track your real conversions and try to get data from your paying customers like asking them how they found you. It is amazing the intel you can gather from your actual customers. Analytics is good, but don't underestimate what customers tell you face to face.
Best of luck!

It could be a myriad of things. One thing I would suggest is using tracking urls that should solve, or at least shed some light on what is happening. You can use them in conjunction with AWStats to see what people are actually coming and try to figure out if it is because of a user agent or even a specific platform they might be using. It could be some facebook web phone app issue or something.

Unsolved Google Analytics (GA4) recommendations for SEO analysis?
Guides on Moz and elsewhere mostly refer to Google Analytics' Universal Analytics (UA). However, UA is being replaced with GA4, and the interface, options, and reporting are very different. Can you recommend a clear, thorough, and effective walkthrough of how to set up useful SEO reports in GA4? Is there a simple tool you recommend that will help connect historical data from UA to GA4 when GA4 is the only option available? If there's no simple tool, what values do you recommend retaining from UA for effective historical reporting? How would you use them? At minimum for reporting, I'd want to show month-to-month changes and year-to-year changes (in percentages and in real numbers) for the following: all site visits all organic visits organic visits as a percentage of all site visits organic visits that led to a specific goal completion organic visits that led to any goal completion Thanks in advance for your help!

Funnel Problem in Google Analytics - Please help
Hello, I did set up a several funnel steps in my analytics account to get the funnel visualization report. But it's look fishy, something's clearly wrong that it shows only 10 visitors at the first step but actually more than 5k visitors has visited first goal page and followed through the another all steps. Everyday we are receiving 5k to 10k goal conversions but it not showing in the entire funnel steps through first step to last step. Please see the attached screenshot URL for funnel setup (Admin) and funnel visualization report comparing last two months traffic. Total goal conversions received 3,605 in last two months but in funnel chart (report) it showing only 2% conversions in last step. Anybody can tell me what is the problem with that or analytics not tracking properly?si65Y

Identifying Bots in Google Analytics
Hi there, While you can now filter out bots and spiders in Google Analytics, I'm interested in how you identify a bots and spiders in the first place. For example, it used to be thought that Googlebot wouldn't appear in GA as it 'couldn't process Javascript' but now Google has announced new developments for its crawler with regards to interpreting javascript and CSS, this argument isn't as cut and dry. I'm not suggesting Googlebot appears in Google Analytics, but I am saying that you can't make the case that it won't appear only because it can't interpret JavaScript. So, I'm interested to see what metrics you use to identify a bot? For me, the mix of Users > Browser, Users > Operating System Version is still quite handy, but is it possible to identify individual bots and spiders within Google Analytics? And would Googlebot appear?

Best top 5 actionable insights from Google Analytics
Buongiorno from 14 degrees C cloudy wetherby UK 🙂 With a whole gamut of books out there are written around the topic of "Actionable Web analytics" where you have to wade through chapters of how to suck eggs and how to get analytics part of your business culture (whatever! most clients who look after their websites are entry level Marketing Execs who pay the digital agencies to do the thinking for them) I'd like to cut to the chase and list out say a top 5 of actionable insights a client would actually give the time of day for so heres my top five, whats yours? 1. Landing page bounce - showing them the £5k landing page designed with no conversion thinking is turning off customers
Reporting & Analytics | | Nightwing
2. Synching up PPC campaigns to analytics and showing them how much money they are waisting
3. Goal funnels - Showing them there 20 step shopping conversion funnel gets abandoned at step 3
4. Non brand keyword traffic (although a stack of this gets blocked by "not provided" Big groan...)
5. Event tracking on there 10 page carousel anner showing them no one clicks on banners 2 - 10 So under the strict label of "Actionable data only" from Google analytics whats your best insights you share with clients in the hope that they may actually give data reports the time of day! Grazie tanto,

Google Analytics - Not provided info
Morning all, i am using Google analytics for some time now, One of the issues that i don't have a clear answer for is, when i am looking at Traffic Source --> overview In the Keyword column, that is a line (not provided) What we think here is that we cant see the keywords if someone arrived to our website but was logged-in to Google account Is this correct? is there a way to find the keywords behind this (not provided)? - i have many visits for this line (17.3% of all visits) and i don't know which keywords people used. Thank you SeoWise

Google Analytics and DNS change
Our new alumni application is going be tested at domain uva.imodules.com . We are going to collect traffic data with a Google analytics account number UA-884652-XX. So going to uva.imodules.com/myPage.html would send its data to Google Analytics with that account number. Then when it is ready for production we are going to just change the domain name of the application and switch the DNS over to dardencommunity.darden.virginia.edu . So going to dardencommunity.darden.virginia.edu /myPage.html would send its data to Google Analtics with that SAME account number. Aside from having the testing domain data in the same profile are there any other issues/problems we may run into?
