If Links not in GWT does that mean they havent been Indexed yet?
-
Hi we have had some success recently with increased rank positions, so I am trying to find our what's caused it?
Am I correct in thinking that if google hasnt listed any new links in my GWT account that it hasnt indexed them yet and therefore not impacting my rankings?
Thanks
Ash

Look at Google Analytics, and check your inbound source links. Sometime they will pick up on things that GWT hasn't. Also, a good idea is to link your 2 google accounts together for the best data correlation. (GWT and analytics)

Yes. GWT links can be out of date. This has been mentioned in various places.
If you want to hear it from the horse's mouth see this GWT hangout
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-OuD3NuxiNY
At about 21:45 there is a question about how Google handles 410 and why they keep crawling them. Then at about 27:00 it moves into the re-spidering of dead links and if/when they are updated in GWT. A participant brings up dead links that are mentioned in the links report in GWT, John Mueller from Google states it may take 6 months to 1 year to have them expire from GWT. The video is very interesting - you should watch the whole thing.
The other thing to remember, GWT is really overall a sample that Google is offering so you can't use it as your only source. It usually takes referencing several different databases (Moz, Majestic, Ahrefs, GWT etc) to get an idea of what is out there.
Good luck!

That is an incorrect assumption. Not all backlinks surface in GWT right away or ever. You can check to see if Google has indexed the pages that have the backlinks by finding those pages in the Google index and checking the Google cache date.

PDF best practices: to get them indexed or not? Do they pass SEO value to the site?
All PDFs have landing pages, and the pages are already indexed. If we allow the PDFs to get indexed, then they'd be downloadable directly from google's results page and we would not get GA events. The PDFs info would somewhat overlap with the landing pages info. Also, if we ever need to move content, we'd now have to redirects the links to the PDFs. What are best practices in this area? To index or not? What do you / your clients do and why? Would a PDF indexed by google and downloaded directly via a link in the SER page pass SEO juice to the domain? What if it's on a subdomain, like when hosted by Pardot? (www1.example.com)

Quantifying link building efforts
Does anyone have a way to quantify the value of link building efforts? I am trying to devote resources to improve our link building initiatives but is there any way to correlate it to page rank etc? I know you can't tie it down directly but any rough gauge or studies in the past that people may be aware of? Any thoughts on how you would tackle this question? I need to demonstrate the value it provides in a slightly more scientific manner than saying "it just helps". Thanks,

Any thoughts on why Nextag and MonsterMarketPlace are linking to our site?
I'm looking in WMT at the crawl errors and I noticed that our website has gotten a lot of Not Found crawl errors that seem strange. A lot of these not found pages are Display URLs that I use in PPC advertising, but not actual redirects (i.e. explorica.com/EducationalTrips). When I looked at how these links were being found, the inbound links were coming from Nextag.com and monstermarketplace.com, two sites that our company has never had a relationship with. We're an educational travel company, so we'd have no reason to. When I followed the links, it looks like it's coming from their "Sponsored Links," but these aren't Google or Bing Ads. We don't even advertise on the content network. Example link: http://www.monstermarketplace.com/starters-and-alternators/alternator-motorola-style-12v-51a-10376 (the ads do rotate so my site might not appear when you check it out). Anyone ever had experience with this type of issue?

Indexed URLs in Webmaster Tools
Hi everybody! I've been looking at my Webmaster Tools stats, and it looks like not all the URLs in the sitemap tree have been indexed, according to WMT at least. Is this reliable, and if so, is it worth investigating further? | Sitemap | Status | Type | Downloaded | URLs submitted | URLs in web index |

Will Bing/Google's engine index a page that has only been on social media?
Will Bing's engine index and rank a page that has only been seen on social media and has no inbound links? Will Google's? Are inbound links absolutely required to get a page indexed and ranking and getting traffic? If unknown, how would you go about testing this?
