Xml sitemap only shows up sometimes (magento)
-
Hi Moz community,
I'm using Magento platform. I can generate a sitemap using their xml generator, but it will only pull up sometimes in web explorers, the rest of the time it will show a 404 page.
GWT also tells me that I get a 404 error when testing the sitemap, but sometimes it will acknowledge that it's there. Anyone had this problem before or know how to help. sitemap= www.ice.com/sitemap.xml
Let me know what other information I can provide to help.
Thanks!

Yeah that's definitely an issue we've had in the past (php execution time). It times out so quick for loading anything.
Hopefully it's just a server switch issue that we can upload directly as our robots.txt and sitemap.html aren't showing up either.
Thanks for leading me in the right direction. Very helpful.

It very well could. It seems like the generation time is too short for that many products. One thing I would try (I am not an expert with Magento) is to check what your php execution time limit is. If it is 30 seconds or 1 minute, I would try to increase it to something like 5 or 10 minutes and see if the regeneration works then. The script could be timing out.

It doesn't seem like the file is on the server, but I'm using the Magento sitemap generator which is supposed to automatically add it to the main directory. We just migrated our site from one Magento dev team to another so could this mean that our servers were switched over from Magento to a new one?
We've got ~40,000 total products and ~16,000-17,000 in-stock products.
It hardly takes any time to generate when I run it through Magento, maybe a minute at most. I've also tested out generators like Auditmypc.com (which has worked for every site except this one) and xml-sitemaps.com.

Can you verify if the file is actually on the server? It sounds like the sitemap generator you are using might have a problem. How many products are in the shop? How long does it run when you generate one?

Yoast XML Sitemap Taxonomies
Hey all, Quick question about taxonomies and sitemap settings. On our e-commerce site, we noindex product tags and post tags. Under the "Taxonomies" settings in Yoast I'm seeing taxonomies such as Product Color (pa_color). Would it be wise to remove such taxonomies from our sitemap if we already include product colors, attributes, etc. in our page titles and product descriptions? Thanks in advance, Andrew

Can't generate a sitemap with all my pages
I am trying to generate a site map for my site nationalcurrencyvalues.com but all the tools I have tried don't get all my 70000 html pages... I have found that the one at check-domains.com crawls all my pages but when it writes the xml file most of them are gone... seemingly randomly. I have used this same site before and it worked without a problem. Can anyone help me understand why this is or point me to a utility that will map all of the pages? Kindly, Greg

Combining two existing sites into a single magento install
Hi, We run an online beauty ecommerce store and recently acquired one of our competitors. Their site runs on magento also, and they sell 70% the same product as us. We plan to merge the new site into our existing magento install but keep both sites looking exactly as they do now with different themes, different product names, product descriptions, product prices, category structures etc. In theory the customer would have no idea both sites from the same magento, they will look just as they do now. My question is, will google possibly slap the SERP's of either sites because we have combined them onto the same server and same magento install, even though nothing on either site actually changed on the front end. Both sites already have the same ownership information on the domain WHOIS, and a quick company search would reveal that we legally own both businesses under the same company. So it's not something we are trying to hide, we are open about it, and plan to continue running both sites long term, with each site being targeted to a slightly difference audience, with 30% different products at different price points. Has anyone done this before? Was there any SEO risks or SERP drops? Would love some advice on this matter before we make the move, the possible blow back is way too massive to do it without firm advice saying the risk is very low. Brad.

If I only Link to Page via Sitemap, can it still get indexed?
Hi there! I am creating a ton of content for specific geographies. Is it possible for these pages to get indexed if I only put them in my sitemap and don't link to them through my actual site (though the pages will be live). Thanks!

We have a static sitemap and a blog...Uh oh!
Hi We have a static sitemap and a blog...Uh oh! We are are just realizing that the 2 are not very compatible!! We need a dynamic sitemap. Is there such a thing as a "set and forget" sitemap that updates itself without us maintaining a database of sitemap data? Thanks Andrew

How long does google take to show the results in SERP once the pages are indexed ?
Hi...I am a newbie & trying to optimize the website www.peprismine.com. I have 3 questions - A little background about this : Initially, close to 150 pages were indexed by google. However, we decided to remove close to 100 URLs (as they were quite similar). After the changes, we submitted the NEW sitemap (with close to 50 pages) & google has indexed those URLs in sitemap. 1. My pages were indexed by google few days back. How long does google take to display the URL in SERP once the pages get indexed ? 2. Does google give more preference to websites with more number of pages than those with lesser number of pages to display results in SERP (I have just 50 pages). Does the NUMBER of pages really matter ? 3. Does removal / change of URLs have any negative effect on ranking ? (Many of these URLs were not shown on the 1st page) An answer from SEO experts will be highly appreciated. Thnx !

No longer showing for 'money' phrases but long tail combinations rank high?
I hope someone can shed some light on this as I've been pulling my hair out so much there's hardly any left! Background: 12 year old website that for about 10 years had Top 3 rankings for 100's of phrases but rankings first dropped off August 2011. Panda seemed to be the cause but finding the exact issue is hard. We are an online travel agent and every hotel page has duplicate content copied from other websites. This has not been changed although lots of sections in the site still rank well, so do the hotel pages themselves. Lots of internal duplicate issues have been resolved but with no effect. Our old style link, link, link all day long with our 2-word main key phrase as anchor text has given us an unnatural backlink profile but no message has been left by G about this in WMT (yet). Internal link structure is poor with all pages linking back to the homepage with our 'money' 2-word phrase in 3 places. Penguin wiped two thirds of all our backlinks back in May 2012. Why then, do we still rank for our 'money' phrase on the homepage when it has some extra words included and becomes long tail? e.g. CityName Apartments (money phrase) - Now ranks page 2-3 CityName Apartments to rent for the night - Ranks #2 on Google in all countries To make things more confusing other pages rank really well for similar money phrase e.g. CityName Apartments Offers - Ranks 2nd on 185,000,000 results (not homepage) It seems only the homepage is effected (where 95% of inbound links point) but if the site wide duplicates or unnatural link profile was flagged it would effect more than one page of the site. Wouldn't it?

Is it bad to host an XML sitemap in a different subdomain?
Example: sitemap.example.com/sitemap.xml for pages on www.example.com.
