Will pushing a visitor to a conversion page hosted on a 3rd-party domain hurt the landing page ranking
-
Had an interesting question from a client. The client has a page that is optimized for a specific term. The goal of the page is to push users to sign-up for a trial. The trial registration (conversion) page is hosted by a third-party. Will pushing users to the conversion page cannibalize the SEO authority of the landing page. My reflexive answer is to say no, but now am not so sure.

Hi,
Thanks for the response. My apologies for the impreciseness of my language, but I was trying to describe a unique situation, where the client has or wants to create a "destination" page on their website for a specific keyword but also ultimately push traffic onward to the signup page, which sits on their corporate app server and a completely different domain. In a perfect world, the form would be on their "destination" page (which would make it a true landing page) but I don't believe that is technically or bureaucratically possible. Not looking for a lesson, just some insight on whether Google would reduce the SEO value of the "destination" page for ultimately directing traffic elsewhere. I don't think it would as long as the "destination" page was buttoned up with good structure and quality backlinks. But again, looking for confirmation or thoughts to the contrary.
Ultimately, I think the client is looking for me to give him something to go back to his management team and argue for development resources to put the form on his "destination" page. I can think of plenty of reasons to do it from a process and user experience perspective, but nothing really from an SEO rationale.

First, just to correct your terms. "Conversion" page and "landing" page refer to the same page. The page that pushes the visitor to do something valuable (fill out a form, buy something, etc.). It is the page on which the traffic lands from somewhere else.
So, you're asking if your website page that is pushing traffic towards a landing page have its rankings hurt because the landing page is on another domain? It should not. The only extreme possibility that I can think of is if the other domain has penalties or is somehow known by Google to be a spammer. You never want your site to be associated with such sites in any way.
But why would you structure your conversion path in this manner? Wouldn't you want to keep everything on your domain? The only reason I can think of is if this is an affiliate website. If that's the case, then you need to be careful in general. Google loves to penalize what they call "thin, affiliate websites" that really offer nothing valuable and original -- especially in terms of content -- and exist only to sell stuff. Make sure that you or your client's site (if it's an affiliate) is truly quality. Just a comment on your overall strategy -- if this is indeed the case.
Hope that helps!

Combining products - edit existing product page or 301 redirect to new page?
We want to combine existing products - e.g. 'hand lotion' and 'body lotion' will become 'hand & body lotion'. As such, we'll need to combine the two product pages into one. What would be the best route to take in terms of SEO to do this? My initial reaction is to create a new product page and then 301 or 302 redirect the old products to the new product page depending on if the change is permanent or temporary. Would you agree? Or am I missing something?

Should we rename and update a page or create a new page entirely?
Hi Moz Peoples! We have a small site with a simple site navigation, with only a few links on the nav bar. We have been doing some work to create a new page, which will eventually replace one of the links on the nav bar. The question we are having is, is it better to rename the existing page and replace its content and then wait for the great indexer to do its thing, or perm delete the page and replace it with the new page and content? Or is this a case where it really makes no difference as long as the redirects are set up correctly?

Horrible ranking for hundreds of content pages
We have hundreds of pages of restaurant reviews (each is 100% original content) on our site (for example, here is a list of many of the content pages: https://www.rewards21.com/articles). The PA of almost every page is 1 (ouch). Doing even the most long-tail Google search doesn't bring up one of those pages (even if I include our company name in the search string). I'm certain we have lots of room to improve SEO, but not even seeing the pages come up for even the most long-tail search has me concerned... Our site used to be on Wordpress many months ago and many of these pages ranked fine..ever since switching away from Wordpress, we've not made any SEO progress. Am wondering if something major is "broken" with our site SEO...

Unique Geo-targeted domains v. simple landing pages
I have a client with multiple locations in a central area. Is it better to purchase unique geo-targeted domains i.g. DowntownTopekaPlumber.com and MidtownTopekaPlumber.com and create area specific splash pages with links back to the main site -OR - is it better to simply create landing pages on the main domain - www.GoodGuyPlumbing.com/DownttownTopekaPlumber?

Page Speed
Google recommends a page load speed of 1.4 seconds, is it recommended to have that page speed for every page on the site, or just the landing pages. Is there a tool that will check the load speed of every page on a site and report the slow pages? The free online tools only check one page at a time.

Will "internal 301s" have any effect on page rank or the way in which an SE see's our site interlinking?
We've been forced (for scalability) to completely restructure our website in terms of setting out a hierarchy. For example - the old structure : country / city / city area Where we had about 3500 nicely interlinked pages for relevant things like taxis, hotels, apartments etc in that city : We needed to change the structure to be : country / region / area / city / cityarea So as patr of the change we put in place lots of 301s for the permanent movement of pages to the new structure and then we tried to actually change the physical on-page links too. Unfortunately we have left a good 600 or 700 links that point to the old pages, but are picked up by the 301 redirect on page, so we're slowly going through them to ensure the links go to the new location directly (not via the 301). So my question is (sorry for long waffle) : Whilst it must surely be "best practice" for all on-page links to go directly to the 'right' page, are we harming our own interlinking and even 'page rank' by being tardy in working through them manually? Thanks for any help anyone can give.

Meta Title for large Metro Area landing page
Hello! I am creating "metro landing pages" for an organization that has a 10-18 locations per metro city. The landing page houses brief information about the organization as a whole and then it has the locations listed with links to their respective pages. My question is how to optimize these titles. My sample city is Atlanta, GA. This metro page includes 18 locations from the Atlanta area. Marietta, Sandy Springs, Decatur, etc... My question is what is the best Meta Title to use for a Metro Page like this? Would it be best to say Day Care in Metro Atlanta | ABC Childcare Company | Child Care Atlanta Area or is their a better way to optimize a large Metro landing page? I really appreciate any suggestions! Thanks!!!

Page title
So if we have a main category page on our site (mines an ecommerce site), do we go for more than that main keyword phrase for that category of products, or is it better to just keep it by itself, and not utilize the 65-70 characters available?
