Navigational Links in Dropdown Menus
-
Hi Mozzers
will navigational links in dropdown menus carry the same weight for Google, just as navigational links that are always visible to the user do?
Thx, Chris

No problem
Trust me, you will love seo-browser. It makes it sooooo easy to see what is really going on behind the scenes. Hidden H1 tags, hidden content, h3 header tags in sidebars above first H1, all that good stuff. Enjoy

Woo! A new tool for me to play with. Thanks for the tip, David.

Run the domain through seo-browser. If it shows up there, you are good to go. The only problem I think you would have is if you used javascript or flash, as either of those are more difficult for the bot to read. (flash being pretty much impossible)
To me, the more important question would be: how can you structure your navigation to get a user to spend more time on the site? We have set up sites where only the top level menu item is available, then you have to select a side menu item. By not allowing a user to instantly select the page they want, you can increase on site time, while not hurting the user experience (since they will be directed into a page with info related directly to what they clicked on)
You can see this this in action on our site here: http://www.webdesignandcompany.com/ (for example)
Another big company that uses this style of menu is distilled marketing.Hope this helps answer your original question, and provide some additional insight.

Hi Chris
Yes as long as the links in the drop down are not hidden behind HTML comments prior to being visible to the user they will be treated the same.
To see how Google really sees your website, go to the Google cache of a page and click the 'text only version'
Kind Regards

Linking from Subfolders
Hi, on my new theme there are a bunch of links from subfolders to pages that aren't in a sub folder, these pages also don't have links on the home page. Is there an seo issue when linking from subfolders to pages that aren't. I don't know if I'm wording this properly but what I mean is, mysite/project/project1 linking to mysite/post.

Internal Linking Question(s)
Is it unwise to link internally to a page more than once on the homepage. I am reading that it is considered spammy. I am also reading that it passes PR twice to the internal page instead of just once... Which is it? Is there a way to stop passing PR to the "contact us" page. I watched an older video that Matt Cutts suggested a nofollow. Now I read that this strategy is a no no? Which is it? Thanks! 🙂

Will a large percentage of 404 links negatively impact SERP performance?
We discovered a broken link and issue with a dynamically generated sitemap that resulted in 9,000+ pages of duplicate content (namely there was not actual 404 page, but content for a 404 page that populated on the broken page). We've corrected that issue so the 404 page is working correctly now and there aren't any more broken links on the site. However, we just reviewed our Google crawl report, and saw that now there are 9,000+ 404 links in the Google index. We discovered the initial error when our SERP performance dropped 60% in a month. Now that we've corrected all the duplicate content pages, will vast number of 404 pages negatively impact SERP results? If so, do you recommend doing 301 redirects to the page it should have gone to, and do you know of any automated tools performing the 301's (it's a standard HTML site, no CMS involved). Thanks for your help!

Best way to link to an affiliate site.
I have a site that promotes a single affiliate product. Would it be better to have a "buy" button in the content that goes straight to the external affiliates website or should I send it all to an internal page that redirects thus only having 1 external link to the product site.

Too many on page links on ecommerce site
I have an online store with 10 catagories, many of those have subcategories. I have a tree style navigation menu on the page. This helps people quickly find what they need. However, I end up with about 125 links on the page that way. Does google really penalize me for this? Is there anyway around this? Advice much appreciated!

What are your thoughts about navigation links in the footer? For example: www.chasepaymentech.com - good, bad, or indifferent for SEO?
