Correlation between ranking on Google organic result page and ranking on the local listing
-
Hi Moz fans,
A quick question: any correlation between ranking on Google organic result page and ranking on the local listing or vise versa?
Thnx

Many thanx guys, your input is really helpful. I can say that implementing good and helpful content with focus on local and good citations plus strong backlinks will do the magic.

If you verify your site with Google in Google Places for Business, Google will trust it more since you confirmed it is definitely your site and not some crappy directory site, and it will rank better organically, plus you will rank in local. It's a very important citation to have since Google trusts Google. Tie it into G+ as well and encourage customers to review you on your places page.

Hi Saab,
Good question!
Local Rankings - yes, your organic strength is an important part of these
Organic Rankings - your local strength likely plays a small part in these, inasmuch as something like the amount of citations you've built probably does help you organically (think links), but probably not nearly as much as organic strength influences local rankings.

I dont agree. Having a local listing showing up high is a great thing, dont get me wrong. Problem with local listings is they dont allow you to modify how the listing displays, the ways you can with organic placement. (schema, rich snippets, authorship, ratings/reviews etc)
Unless you are talking about global as in broad keyword ranking vs. local keyword ranking. Then this post is irrelevant.

I think it all comes down to if Google determines it is useful to the user to show a local listing. As to ranking influencing one another, I think its possible. Same way Google looks at ads in Adwords with a quality score and show good ones higher, they probably do this with local listings as well.
Although, I have seen organic sites do well that do not have a local listing.

Hi Saab,
No, there is no correlation at all - the local results have absolutely no impact on the natural ones at all (unless you count actually appearing for a local search). Search results are littered with examples of this. As an example, a new customer of mine is lagging behind in the SERP race and although she has a local page, she doesn't appear for her key phrase anywhere useful. Her main competitor has no local page but is position 1 for her phrase.

Your local ranking, if your page are correctly oriented, are always better than global ranking. But think, if you doesn't have nothing of global ranking, the local ranking also start as zero.
Then, yes, your global ranking affect the local one. A good global seo gives you good global ranking, and then, promotes your local ranking.

Had a local SEO client completely drop off in all rankings...?
Hey everyone! I wanted to ask the Moz community on what I should be on the lookout for in this situation; I have a local SEO client, an orthopedic clinic, who out of nowhere completely dropped off the map. Their Search Visibility is now at .001%. I really have no idea what would have caused this... I have dozens of other local SEO clients and have never seen this before.

Structured data for business listings
If I have a page of 20 local business listings, do I need to provide structured data for each business listing? is that necessary and would it help with SEO? So if I have a page of Vancouver Brain Injury Lawyers, and list off 20 local law firms that focus on that type of injury, should I have structured data for each law firm that I list?

Incorrect Google Places Listing Outranks Other
We have 2 Google Places listings (due to 2 Google Accounts). One listing (the one with the wrong address) outranks the correct listing. Am working on updating citations and have updated the website with the correct address. I do note that Google has not picked up that the contact page has changed and has not seen the changes to many of the citations. Do we: Update the incorrect listing with the correct address for the time being to resolve issues with clients. Remove the old (incorrect) listing. Or is there a better way to sort this out am concerned that removing the listing will lose us our Google Places rank.

Can I request removal of a duplicate competitor Google Business listing?
I have a local competitor that is boggling me with his local pack rankings. For certain keyword phrases, he is ranking in multiple local 3 pack spots. The thing is, he only has one business location. So basically he has two different Google maps listings for the same business location ranking in the local pack. The NAP information is different for both listings except for the physical address. I can't understand for the life of me how this is actually helping him instead of hurting him.... My client has way more citations. A decent blog with solid content. An SEO optimized mobile website (compeititor website is not mobile ready). Etc..... Don't get me wrong, my client is doing really well and is ranking top 3 in his area for nearly 30 industry related keyword phrases. I guess that is part of the reason I'm so boggled. Can anyone provide any insight? Can I bring this up to Google and have them remove the duplicate listing somehow? I'm literally sitting #4 in the local pack for some valuable keywords, and the only reason I'm not #3 or higher is because the same physical business location is taking up two of the spots. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Did anybody else notice a big change in local/map results in late Jan early Feb
Hi, We work on quite a few local campaigns for clients and saw a fair bit of movement in the UK in late January/early February. Did anybody else notice this? Some of ours have improved, some have lost out, but the results generally seem to have shifted against usual guidelines for listing optimisation (reviews, local phone numbers, consistency with website etc.). Any thoughts? Thanks

Local Listings - where to manage?
I'm optimizing for a a local client and I have suggested we take a look at Moz Local to manage their listings. I showed the customer the data aggregators that Moz Local would push data to. (Which of course they had never heard of). They were concerned about YELP and TripAdvisor, etc. If I populate their local business data into Moz Local > Moz local sends it to > lets say Factual... does Factual send/share this information to Yelp? Or do I need to ad the company information in Yelp or TripAdvisor in addition to what Moz Local is sharing to the aggregators? Would love some feedback! Thanks, Jolie

Google Local listing variations
Hi Moz People, I sometimes receive rich snippets (relating to my services) with my Google Local listing and other times I do not. Specifically, if I search my company name ("Marketing Implementation Clinic" as per Google+ Page name) I see the a list of services with the local listing (see the picture attached). However, if I search a derivation (say "Marketing Clinic Melbourne"") I see a very simple local listing without the services snippets. Are there explicit guidelines on when these snippets would be returned? LPk6tmq.png?1
