How to determine if you have same site pages competing for rankings?
-
One of my client's sells career assessment tests / personality tests. The site includes a shop with detailed product pages for the tests and also has lengthy informational pages describing the science behind the different tests, etc as they are pretty indepth and hard to understand for someone who is new to them. The site also includes a blog that has 500 or more posts, all career related... some of them referencing products.
My concern is: We'd like the product or information pages to rank for SERPs. Some of the blog posts are ranking instead for their top target keywords.
My question is: Is there an easy way to determine which pages on a site are competing for the same keyword? And what is the best way to correct this issue and ensure the correct page gets targeted? I was thinking adding a noindex to the pages would be the best way.
Advice is greatly appreciated!

Here is the best way that I know to check that. Do a site query like this if you want to see the pages on your site that are relevant for "baloney".
Site:egol.com baloney
My site is like yours. I have product pages and often multiple information pages and sometimes blog posts. I make sure that all of those link to my preferred ranking page. Also, the most important ranking pages on my site are in the persistent navigation.
But, I have a site with a few thousand pages, so the secondary and tertiary ranking pages have multiple links to them from other topic-relevant pages. To get my preferred page ranking in the SERPs, I do these things....
1) get as many RELEVANT internal links as you can pointing to your priority pages for any given keyword
2) be sure that your priority pages have the best on-page optimization for your preferred keyword
Much of the time, my informational pages rank best because they receive more external links and because they have much richer content. So, to drive traffic to the money pages, I have multiple links on them to the money pages and even display ads for the products on the money pages. Just like running ads for your own products.

My page was removed from Google search result, any idea why?
URL: http://id.gamesinasia.com/review-smartphone-xiaomi-mi3/ Hi, So last week I wrote a review about a smartphone and after a couple days my post was at 6th (first page) in google search result. But yesterday it was suddenly disappeared from google search result (not even in 10++ page). Normally I just have to wrote title page + games in asia, like "review xiaomi mi3 games in asia" and google will show me the post but now it wont even show. In fact two other site that simply scrap my content was showing on 1st and 2nd result! More info: All the content was original, including the image. We are also Yahoo (Indonesia) content partner so my review also ends up in yahoo site ( https://id.berita.yahoo.com/review-xiaomi-mi3-sebuah-angkatan-baru-dunia-smartphone-121537236.html) I'm not expecting a super high ranking, but google is punishing the page and I have no idea why. Thanks!

Hi everybody, I've been working on the subdomain http://fr.mt.com since a few month and on the last crawl on the keyword "accessoire de mesure" i had a big drop from rank 3 to not in top 50 and I cant figure why. Here is the page : http://fr.mt.com/fr/fr/home/products/Laboratory_Analytics_Browse/Meter_family_page/Meter_Accessor.html - PA : 30 DA : 71 I did an on page report to get a grade and i got... A on this keyword. I know this page is not perfect (lack of content) but in my opinion it still relevant on this keyword. Do you have any idea of what happened ? Thanks in advance for your answers

Is there a point in ranking non-competitive terms?
Hello, I wanted to know if you could still make $$$ of a term that is not competitive for people. For example if a keyword is a quote, an idea, topic, or something that isn't real but still brings more than 1K exact search a month (Several terms come out to more), how can this be monetized? If it can't, could you just own one to show off?

Plummeting traffic and rankings for main KWs
Hi there mozzers, You have been so helpful in the past and we'd really appreciate your insights into our problem... we have two data recovery companies in the UK, one has been established for 11 years (dataclinic.co.uk) , the second (datlabs.co.uk) is a subsidiary that's been around for 5 years. Dataclinic has always ranked highly, usually in the top 1-5 on page one for relevant KWs and towards the end of last year we had traffic of approx 1,800 UK visitors/month - now we're down to only 600. Week on week we're falling and I have started to dread the monitoring checks. We're slipping in the rankings too. As our business relies almost 100% on Google rankings our phones just aren't ringing. In contrast our subsidiary company datlabs is climbing up the rankings and drawing more traffic - but unfortunately nothing like enough to compensate for the decline in the main company's traffic. We have used the same kinds of marketing strategies for both but have invested more energy into social for dataclinic, and more energy into local for datlabs. I'd say that our strategies have been less than sparkling clean - we've paid for directory links but not with the really spammy directories. We're at a loss to understand what has happened to have had such a dramatic and devastating effect - please help!! Thanks so much Sue

Big difference in rank on google.com and google.no
Hi Our E-com website went from 8th to 1st spot yesterday for our most important keyword (barneklær = childrens clothing) on google.no weirdly enough we arent ranking on first page at all on google.com . I find this very strange especially since the keyword itself is so country specific - mainly because of the norwegian specific letter - æ. The results are not due to personalization i ve check it with the keyword difficulty tool here on seomoz. The sites ranking higher then me on google.com are sites i am ranking higher then on google.no. Anyone got a good explanation ? The changes for my keyword in ranking i saw yesterday was alot more then i am used to see - almost like google made some sort of script change. we went from 8th to 1st. 1st dropped to 4th, 5ht went to 2nd etc - i am not used to seeing this big changes. Anyone got a clue to either of these 2 questions ?

Keyword analysis/optimization for blog sites (avoiding self cannibalization)
Hi there, I work on a site that has regular blog and article posts (or at least, we're shooting for regular), and I'm trying to work on a fluid approach for keyword analysis and optimization. I am wondering...is it best to research new keywords for each new post? I am unsure of what the effect is of optimizing multiple pages for the same keyword. I've been using the SEOmoz report card tool to grade my on page optimization, and I noticed one of the criteria was to avoid self cannibalization. Will I be competing against myself if I optimize multiple pages for the same keyword? I'm worried about what will happen in a month or two when I run out of common keywords and have to start optimizing our latest posts around really obscure keywords. Am I thinking about this the right way? Thanks!
